| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/3/2006 2:01:25 PM | I think there are two factors at work....
1) Men are often encouraged by some portions of the female community to use pet names, even with near-strangers. I have encountered this in the bar scene (expecially as a professional musician). So, in other words, some women encourage this behaviour.
2) A man who is uncreative will come across as....well....uncreative. He will generally use words that make him feel more at ease, and settle on a "common lingo" to interact with others. Of course, the internet makes people feel more distanced from each other, which emboldens a man to call gals pet names even when he doesn't know her.
Guess what? Women do it too....and its just as aggravating.
Cheers,

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/3/2006 10:57:08 PM | | The guy I'm kinda of seeing calls me either by my full name instead of the shortened version that everyone else calls me, or "baby" or "sweetie". He called me "baby" one day, but he asked first if I minded him calling me that. I of course didn't. I kinda like the pet names. I have a friend that calls me "Princess" I think it got to my head, cause I like to think I am one sometimes.. heh. | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/4/2006 4:52:03 AM | i do that sometimes. i dated a woman named katherine. everyone called her kat, katie, kathy.....i like the whole name so i always called her katherine. also like elizabeth, not beth, liz, lizzie.
but yeah its usually baby. and when im irate its BABY!! STOP IT!

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/4/2006 6:11:32 AM | I want to add that women (including myself) are guilty of doing this too, however; I *never* do it because I am afraid I'll call someone the wrong name - I just do it because I think it tends to make people feel warm and special.
If I'm around someone who really likes their name, then I use their name or a play on their name.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/4/2006 11:23:37 AM | | i get called toots and babycakes by people online who I havent even met yet...doesnt bother me....i think it shows that their comfortable with you......although i dont like being called lovey, that is a bit too much | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/4/2006 5:16:10 PM | | ...because it is easier than remembering the lady's first nameand it signifies that the ladies isn't anything special for that is what all the ladies are called......Although some guys don't even realize the insult...but guys we weren't born yesterday and I think it is condescending and patronizing.....those terms are supposed to be terms of endearment... | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/4/2006 5:24:36 PM | Hey.. wow.. what a diverse range of comments.. ok.. here's my two cents..
Personally I like it being called Hun or sweetie either when I'm out and a cute guy at a store or something calls me that.. I find it flattering.. Or when I'm in a relationship and it's meant to be said because I'm in that relationship with the guy.
But then that puts me at one question.. something that has kinda bothered me over the years i've been dating, is that when you just meet a guy and if things are either in conversation or maybe if they get kinda hot and heavy it comes up in bed, but if I'm called baby or babe, then I kinda wonder in the back of my mind how many other girls, if any, does he say that to also, just to kinda lead them on.. Maybe I'm thinking the wrong idea here but it has been a curiousity i've had for years... can any guys answer this for me? Maybe it will somewhat unravel the mystery a little more for me..

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/4/2006 5:36:30 PM | | .....Too true...if you are in a serious relationship, it is inevitable that both sexes will say 'hun' or whatever, but that is to be expected I think....then the terms become relative to the relationship....but prior to that....no....it takes time to earn the right to call anyone...babe, sweetheart, love.... | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/4/2006 9:18:48 PM | Because I use first names when I'm angry with someone and I'm about to rip a shred off of them. Ex: "Look, ______, we have to talk." or "_______, come here please!"
Replace those blanks areas with either your name, or a pet name, and you might see the difference.
Baby, come here please!
(Your name), come here please!
Hope that helps you sweetiepie, muffin, cutie, lovey-dovey, duckie. lol

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/4/2006 9:29:26 PM | | For the same reason women do the same thing to men. It's meant as a term of endearment, and I don't do it until I think a comfort zone has been established. | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/4/2006 10:07:12 PM | Here's your new name..... Whiney Pooh.
If they called you by your name, you'd be ****in that they didn't speak sugar with you like the people on the park bench you see. Continue to look for things to **** about, you will create them from perspective.
They guy is expressing himself. If you don't like it, consider that he isn't worth your time and find someone that calls you Fred. Instead.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/4/2006 10:29:40 PM | Maybe I'd use another term face to face, but strictly for online, through email and chat, I'd rather avoid using those kind of terms.
Too many opportunities to miscommunicate online.

I have a first name and rather be called that then - baby - sweetie - honey - I have a first name so why don't they use it ? Especially the ones I haven't spoken too or even exchanged emails. I guess these are considered words of endearment and I don't get this at home. GW
The only women I say this to are friends, since I have alot of gal's as friends and nothing more. They don't seem to mind either....As they call me some form of pet name in return.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/5/2006 4:25:01 AM | is your first name ducky? lol. it's just a term of endearment, they are flirting with you. i don't think it is meant to be disrespectful in anyway | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/5/2006 5:32:34 AM | being called that by ppl on here who don't know me at all...that is annoying, definitely. I even msgd someone to tell him not to call me that if he wanted me to talk to him further. (but, if I'm close to you, then i'll be using those terms myself) | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/5/2006 5:41:53 AM | I hear people doing this all the time, infact I get alot of women calling me hun, or baby. It kinda annoy's the crap out of me; Especially considering all these people know my real name is Wickens and I'd rather be called that. The only time I will call anyone a nickname is when I'm being sarcastic for example: "oohhh muffin..." - Just random crap like that, other than that it's hey, you, YO or their first name. | |

Babe (heh, heh): If we're in bed, then you ARE my baby! You're the only woman in the universe, at that moment. The passion is sincere!

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/10/2006 4:05:27 PM | Again, (mentioned in another post about the whole "why do guys") not all guys do this, especially if there is no dating relationship...I'd have to be dating a girl for over a month before I called her "hun" or "sweetie"...
Some (and not most) guys will call a girl "hunny", "baby girl" etc. after two seconds of meeting the girl...Just be clear, tell the guy to please not call you "hunny", "baby girl" etc.
