PS, I won't do this to anybody who tells me they don't like it, of course.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/18/2006 9:51:45 PM | Pet names are great. I personally prefer non-generic onces. When your bf/gf comes up with their own little name for you, it's like an intimacy thing. Like you have your own private club that no one else can join. My ex and I were together for almost 3 years, and we developed our own language of pet names; things relating to food, TV, people and everything.
The pet names I hate most are: angel, baby, sexy, princess (that's what my dad called me when I was little, so it's weird to hear it in any other way and a total turnoff).
AND I HATE BEING CALLED BEAUTIFUL/GORGEOUS! (as a noun, not an adjective; I don't think there are any women who don't like being described as beautiful/gorgeous).

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/19/2006 1:19:11 AM | you forgot Honey Doll . Pumkin, shnookims, darlin' , Liebsheun, Sunshine, Shay Shweethot, Toots, I've said them all. Why do we say that ?? Maybe for the same reason Female Hairdresses or Grandmothers call everybody Dear and give them a hug. Older British women call everybody "love" . Plus we dont know every woman's name..so..gotta call them something. Better than saying, "Yo, B.itch..wassup"
hahahaha...
sorry..just kidding
Probably just using that as an excuse to be flirtacious and get away with it. Expressing interest subtly disguised as an excepatble indearment. Yeah. That's it. No really. Because we like you. True..we need new words. You write them up..we'll use them

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 9/20/2006 6:41:43 AM | It all depends on the context and who is saying it. If I know a girl is comfortable talking to me -- whether a friend or potential lover, I'll call her sweetie, or babe. I'll call her by her name a lot too, but it all depends on context.
You can tell who is using the term while acting, and those who are sincere.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 10/15/2006 12:02:07 AM | | AMEN!! What is the big prob with having a special name for the one you care about and love huh? it's a term of endearment, just remember to use her name sometimes lol. some people get too uptight about things like this, do we complain when girls call us hun or whatever? ask yourself that | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 10/15/2006 12:16:53 AM | | Me personally, I never do it to someone I don't know, but when I have been talking or even seeing that person for a while and I can tell they feel comfortable I will ask them if they mind if I call them whatever, hon, or if I'm chatting with (I'll leave names out) they'll call me cutie and I do the same they don't mind, or else they would say so:) | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 10/15/2006 2:53:14 AM | | Pretty simple if he calls all women by pet names he won't run the risk of saying the wrong name. Once in a relationship though, I would think it's meant as a special term just between the two of you. | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 10/15/2006 11:29:47 AM | I did post in this previously ... I do like pet names.
When I saw this post high up on the "my forums" list I opened it again, read a few replies, and realised that Jeez ... people really do take things far too seriously in this life. There are worst things that can happen, to me anyway, than having someone call me sweety.
suck it up ... enjoy it even.
(unless you're doing the horizontal mambo with your significant other of ... oh ... 7 years and he screams out his secretary's name ... there are always exceptions, I suppose)

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 10/15/2006 12:12:25 PM | | ive noticed women do this ALOT...use pet names hun, sweetie, ETC. and i love it.SO I honestly think its NOTHING to ever get upset or offended by>I look at it this way, if someone gets offended by pet names, then what ELSE are they gonna get so easily bent outta shape over? | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 10/15/2006 5:21:20 PM | Hey, I don't mind the pet names.
Lately I have been called a lot of them: Beautiful, babes, love, dear, etc., etc., etc. I found it strange at first but better than being called the nasty names. I think of it as a sign of appreciation and/or affection. There's nothing wrong with a little appreciation and affection to make your day better. But if you don't like it, just ignore it.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 11/1/2006 8:04:09 PM | It's the I don't remember your name syndrome. In the past week, I've been addressed with cutie, sweety, darlin, baby, beautiful, and blue eyes. Now ask me if any of those men know my name. Nope not at all. I don't even bother to tell my name until they ask. Saves them some confusion. | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 11/2/2006 5:45:06 PM | Personally, I use pet names according to my feelings for another. Respectfully though, I use real names. If we have talked and my initial judgement of character has escalated, and/or we are accelerating in the relationship then I use pet names accordingly.
i.e. hun=I am friendly and outgoing and cautiously and respectively attracted. sweety=I want to comfort you.(hun is part of this equation too) Honey=at this point in the relationship, if I am using your real name, something is wrong or I simply want your attention quickly. Baby=we have been physically intimate and our souls have intertwined and I can't find a closer attached name on such short notice! :) Sweetheart=again, comfort and love is my initiative here. Babydoll=sexual inuendo with a twist of heartfelt emotion. Dear=I see forever in our future.
Understand OP that some do not use these pet names with just anyone.
And some do....Depends on their motives I believe.
Hope this gives some insight.
Best wishes to all.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 11/2/2006 5:52:23 PM | I guess the ideal role most people gather of women or most men gather of women is the sensitive type.
So many women like the romance and specialty. Its common habit for me to say it to women. I say hun, sweetie, babe, suga, or what not... Its because i respect all women for who they are and their loving side... as long as they treat me with respect of course.
Not just that I believe all women are beautiful... So of course that is why its natural for me.
Each person is different though and has their different reasons... If you are not getting that at home, then maybe you need to re-evaluate and find out why not?
Does he show you the affection you want? Is that the way you like it? Are you jealous of hearing other people say it because you don't hear it?
I mean what exactly would make you want to come on here and ask a question unless you are trying to find reasons or ways should I say to get your man to say it? If you weren't, then why would you care if other people say it out of the kindness and respect in their heart? Or if they say it to other people and not you, then why would that bother you?
I guess I am kind of confused...
But, I guess there are a lot of reasons and options on the table...
Its up to you to figure out what is that reasoning and what are your options...
Best of luck to you... and remember don't take what I say or anyone else says personally and take sweetie and all them other nicknames as a compliment... Not something degrading...
God Bless. | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 11/2/2006 6:44:04 PM | I agree, "Dear" is really old fashioned.
When my ex called me that it was the first time I'd ever been called that and it was overwhelmingly comforting and secure. I LOVED it!! I thought it was soooooo sweet.
