A poem is whatever the professors
and the critics and other poets
say it is
not!
A poem is your inner ess o bee
saying NO!

NO to the church, NO to Mommy
and Daddy, NO to the government,
NO to all those who claim
to know what reality is!
“Reality,” said Lily Tomlin,
“is just a collective hunch.”

THAT is a poem....

A poem is..
Your deepest fantasies,
Your darkest fears,
Your happiest moments,
Your saddest thoughts,
Your enlightened mind,
your engulfed heart,
A poem is you...

A poem is your feelings in words and phonetics strung together
tethered
woven
painted
metaphored
mirrored
misted
muddled
motley
misunderstood
just as they should be
to express now
where
when
who
why
what
which
will
wish
hope
dream
invent
dissect
dissolve
distract
resolve
any
thing
place
time
space
etc. ...

A glow of truth lies warm
Embryonic
Protected and hidden
Soon tiny revelations burst
Through the membrane
Of the subconscious

Inscribing the waking self
In quanta
The whole of which
With a will of its own
Unblemished
Emboldened
Guiding the hand
It writes itself

As reason knows
No other purpose
The poet hesitates
Falters
And it falls to the ground
Abashedly
Where it beams
In the glare of discovery

Sliding slowly with my thoughts
as they cascade down the mirrors of your soul
into a place where honesty grows
around the flickers of light
that jump through the tiny glitter of memories
you painted in my heart.

Some poems whisper,
some shout.
They rhyme,
but not all the time.
And when they do,
they do so both inside
and out...

A poem is a tapestry
carefully woven,
or carelessly knotted
with colors and notions.
Incomplete thoughts,
that resonate yet,
with just a few hearts,
and souls
and yet...
A poem is of dreams
and sighs and screams,
bliss wrapped up
with hopeless streams
of thought and whispers
of no thought at all.
A poem is like something
and nothing at all.

Full of awe,
full of it,
inspired by awe,
Aw, ain't that sweet?
Some with awe,
the sum of raw,
inside out,
the out side right.
Leaning left
without a doubt
words that fool
words that fight.
My words,
your words,
ours alone.
Touched by awe?
Touched, all right.

A Poem

A poem is a wedding,
a merging of impressions,
a gown of wonder,
a garter of promise,
the touchstone of fidelity.

A poem is a child,
the offspring of a fertile mind,
of a questing heart, of a soul
girded in ecstasy.

A poem is love’s labour,
an offering to the Utmost High,
the sacrificial lamb slain
on the altar
of mystery.

a poem
is
the rustling leaves
on a windy day
words of silk
running through minds way
a train wreck
with words that play
dripping honey
of heart felt say
screaming tales
wispering wales
crying gales
wrritten in wandering phrase
a poem
of past woes presant foes
fragrant as a scented rose
smelly as farm wind blows
touching deap within
where the soul grows
a poem is............

The waking bird may sing a verse
somehow captured by our words
to tinkle gaily cross the pages
whilst those all consuming rages
blaze angrily within our minds
yet on releasing them we find
often our anger dissipated
by the poem we related

We write of things before our eyes
to hope that others visualise
our hopes, and yes, our empty dreams
that always find a way it seems
to intrude on what we write
envisioning such swift delight
then simply wait for all to see
those inner thoughts of you or me
..

to come up with a lot of imaginitive and/or provocative suggestions. I was trying to think of a follow-up to Thorb's "A poem is... a licence to break all the rules"
How about: "A poem proposes the rules it goes on to break"?

Ode to Poems

Poems must rhyme
as music has rhythm
the root of all words
is the tempo and meter.
Clippety clop,
and drippety drop,
the rhythm of life
now just add a tone.
Clop...clip...ety.
Ety...drip...drop.
Rules are made
to be broken.

Think of the difference between a cook and a chef. There ate too many poet cooks.

A poem is a beautifully crafted string of words that light up the soul, in the hands of a poet chef.

Like a judge once said about pornography: I cannot define it, but I know it when I see it.

A poem is the child of the consumation between the paper and the poet, which comes to life through the blood-sacrifice of the pen, and has no choice but to be born, in order to carry the weight of all that's felt to the reader so that she may share the burden borne by the poet alone.

Ahmed, 2006.
