Introduction to Poetry

I ask them to take a poem
and hold it up to the light
like a color slide.

or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem
and watch him probe his way out,

or walk inside the poem's room
and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to water-ski
across the surface of a poem
waving at the author's name on the shore.

But all they want to do
is tie the poem to a chair with rope
and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose
to find out what it really means.

does it matter truely..
cuz when one says of what it is..
it is not held with contempt...
for one eye views ont hing..
another views another..
yet in a poem it is but this...
one truth..
one thought..
captivated in a mind....
set forth in words in motion on a pixelated screen..
for all to see yet for some to condemn...
a poem is what one thinks of jsut that..
ones mind..
set in motion...
fvck the hardship..
the bullsh*t in between..
the whole of the "youre wrong and im right"...
it is one views on realities based upon fiction or fact..
all in all..
a poem is but a thought...
thrown on paper ..
or typed on here for all to see....
a poem is...
me..
you..your inner being...
eyes that see...
a poem is what you are..
hard..shallow..happy..
sad..relentless..tormented..blissfulll.....
it is the person that writes it...
YOU ...damn it..
a poem is you..

Mother
by Herman de Coninck
translated by Kurt Brown & Laure-Anne Bosselaar

What you do with time
is what a grandmother clock
does with it: strike twelve
and take its time doing it.
You’re the clock: time passes,
you remain. And wait.

Waiting is what happens to
a snow-covered garden,
a trunk under moss,
hope for better times
in the nineteenth century,
or words in a poem.

For poetry is about letting things
grow moldy together, like grapes
turning into wine, reality into preserves,
and hoarding words
in the cellar of yourself.

...a stab in the dark,
a pretense that there is light
when there is no light,
as yet,
to be seen.

...an act of intimacy.
It is not given casually but is an act of trust
Wherein I assume you are here
Because you desire what I have to offer.
This is a revelation of how I spend my nights
of a lover my mind took for a while
of a conception laid in sheets of paper
of a hard-born **stard awaiting acknowledgement
So treat my exposure decently
For there are lovers who have never seen me as naked
As I am when I write

I Notice the Dark Side

Half the poems are bit-ching put to rhyme
They just keep it going on time after time
They wish someone dead
They can’t move ahead
To stay stuck in your bitter rut is a crime

a poem is a philosphical dream or a potential truth and sometime wishful thinking.
A poem could be just about anything.

A poem is...

A journey into the past
and reflection of the future
A path through your heart
penetrating into emotions
Thoughts scattered
needing to find a "home"
A pen, the voice
for words often left...
unspoken

A poem is:

Words, thoughts, dreams, and rhymes,
Bits of concentration for a small period of time.

Informative, inquisitive, impulsive, and true,
Even if it is only the truth to you.

Daring, compelling, and remarkably shy,
Often leaving the reader to just stop and ask why.

Meaningful, comical, and magical too,
A poem is simply a reflection of you.
