When my dad took me fishing, we'd have sardines and hotsauce sandwiched between crackers. I love them to this day, probably more for sentimental reasons that anything else.

I once met a spanish girl on a London tube train.. got talking.. got round to chiparon.. and she promised to bring me some back. Gave her my phone number and forgot about it. However in about a month, she materialised with half a dozen cans.. she helped my wife and I eat some of it..
Life can be wonderful...

| Foods you like and everyone else hates Posted: 9/13/2006 6:14:24 PM | .. and now I feel ashamed. Forgot about my own country's dishes.
How about Kangaroo Tail Soup (really a nice chunky stew, not unlike a Hungarian Goulash) Kangaroo Tail Steaks.. Crocodile steak, snake (never had this one, but I know people who have),
And the quite famous Carpetbag Steak.. which is a tender large fillet steak with pocketed oysters.. tawte permeating thru the meat.. I do mine on the barby. I sometimes paint a mild curry sauce on the outside.
My son isn't keen on oysters, so I make a different one for him. I put barbied prawns in the pockets... This is also wonderful....
I must stop this... I MUST NOT GO ON FOREVER.
Before I go.. any New Yorkers able to remind me of the things available from the Festival of San Genaro??? in Little Italy?

| Foods you like and everyone else hates Posted: 10/11/2006 4:30:01 PM | | Well, we did get a new Executive Chef where I work. He started putting dishes on the menu that he though was great, but everyone else (including customers) completly despised. There was nothing wrong with these dishes or he cooking, it just is not the type of food the people in Western North Carolina would enjoy. I'm sure these dishes are very popular in Southern Florida (where he is from). People around here like basic things; like fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and overly sweetened tea. Blackend Slamon w/ Pineapple Glaze is just not anything that would selll around here, lol. The only problem was that he could not be made to understand this, which is problably the reason he is no longer with us. | |

I'm craving coconut shrimp don't know if you have Outback Steakhouses near you but their coconut shrimp are excellent ... got the recipe from CopyKat Recipes and everybody says they taste just like the restaurant variety
Outback Steakhouse Gold Coast Coconut Shrimp
8 fluid oz. flat beer 1 cup self-rising flour 2 cups (7 oz pkg) sweetened flaked coconut, divided 2 tsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt substitute 12 jumbo shrimp vegetable oil for frying paprika
Marmalade dipping sauce
1/2 cup orange marmalade 2 tsp. stone ground mustard 1 tsp. prepared horseradish 1 dash salt
Dipping Sauce
Place all marmalade dipping sauce ingredients in a small bowl and refrigerate for at least one hour.
Batter
Use an electric mixer to combine the beer, flour, ½ cup of the coconut flakes, sugar and salt in medium bowl. Mix well, then cover and refrigerate for at least one hour.
Shrimp
Devein and peel off the shell back to the tail. Leave the last segment of the shell plus the tail as a handle. When the batter is ready, preheat oil in a deep pot or deep fryer to about 350°F. Use enough oil to cover the shrimp completely. Pour the remainder of the coconut into a shallow bowl. Be sure the shrimp are dry before battering. Sprinkle each shrimp lightly with paprika before the next step. Dip one shrimp at a time into the batter, coating generously. Drop the battered shrimp into the coconut and roll it around so that it is well coated. Deep-fry four shrimp at a time for 2 to 3 minutes or until the shrimp become golden brown. Flip the shrimp halfway through. Drain on paper towels briefly before serving with marmalade sauce on the side.

| Foods you like and everyone else hates Posted: 10/22/2006 2:28:24 AM | Hi again.. haven't checked the threads for a couple of weeks. But isn't it wonderful? So many ways of pampering the tastebuds. Of course, the imposition of localised provincial things is there... but they're only provincial in the area where they are.... Something ordinary in for example southern USA, is unique if tasted by someone from France. And so forth around the globe.
We all have to keep an open mind. I'm very fortunate in having tasted, and relished, foods from many corners of the world. I also feel sorry for people who have NOT had this additinal pleasure of life. I'm glad that I've kept an open mind. I've never said no to anything to taste. My palate is the beneficiary. For this reason, I really feel sorry for folks who have not travelled, AND kept an open mind to trying things that to them were new or even abhorrent. Life can be wonderful.
Tonight, I've had a couple of glasses of a fine red wine... and have mellowed somewhat. But.. I'd love to thank all you people for raising my awareness of things that I have not pampered my tastebuds with... YET!!
And.. we haven't mentioned the thing that is my favourite taste in the whole of life. And I have to thank you ladies for that.
cheers.... | |
