| how do you feel about getting old? Posted: 9/4/2006 8:42:34 AM | When I was in my forties.......I think I remember back that far. (smile) Age is just a number. I no longer have the looks I had when I was younger, but I sure do have more sense, more intelligence, and the experience of many more valuable lessons learned. I'm not thrilled with getting physically older, but I have no choice in that. It's happening to all of us. I feel more in touch with myself. Understand myself alot better. Actually like myself alot more. I know more about what I want out of life. My priorites have changed with age. Whereas I used to think that sex and fun and partying were all top priorites, they have been moved down on the list, and now, peace and happiness have taken top billing. I still go to parties of course. I still love the thrill of amusement parks. I still enjoy alot of things and still pursue them. Age hasn't held me back from anything. But it has opened alot of new doors for me. All in all, I guess I'm okay with it. | |

But, no matter how old I am blessed enough to get, "they" will NEVER be able to force me to grow up. *stomps foot* I refuse!

I don't get the invites i used to get, for instance with my daughters. They go clubbing and i know they don't want to hurt my feelings, they don't think it cool to be with me there ,( i am 18 in my head lol ) they don't tell me that but an early taxi home is a good hint :))

I watch my Snort....now eight years old, which is up there for a Bulldog, and see him slowing down, sleeping more, tiring out sooner, losing his hearing a little.... oh, were you asking about me getting older??? too late! | how do you feel about getting old? Posted: 9/4/2006 3:27:52 PM | Never too old!
Somedays my body feels like it's a whole lot older than the rest of me, but now thanks to modern pharmacology, it's starting to feel a whole lot younger! I've found a way to turn back the hands of time!!
My brain still thinks I'm ready for all kinds of things like I used to do back when. My hearing was damaged a long time ago (too close to those bass speakers in too many clubs...lol). My eyesight hasn't changed much since I was twelve and given some warm up exercises I bet I could still get myself into some interesting contortions. Course once I got into those convoluted positions, it might take a chain hoist to get me out, but it would be worth it.
My mother is definitely slowing down but that's because she operates from a different mind set. She thinks she's too old. When her feet hurt, she sat down and said 'I can't'. When mine hurt and sometimes they do, I figure I need to walk on them more.
Don't ask me to go interior hiking with 75lbs of pack on my back, I could only manage maybe 35 with some advance training and no, I don't do ten miles a day anymore! I do demand a comfortable mattress at the end of the day, but it's height off the floor is negotiable. Ask me to go hiking for the day and I'm there. Interior camping, sure why not, as long as someone packs the inflatable mattress and the air pump. I'm sure I could still cook over a wood fire as well as I once did, oh and no fry pan necessary for bacon and eggs.
Oh and Better, I just checked, leg swing freeform is 34", with something or someone to hold onto for a second, it's more like 40". Is that good enough..

| how do you feel about getting old? Posted: 9/4/2006 3:30:23 PM | Well, there is an upside and a downside to the accumulating birthdays. I am thankful to be in great shape now, but have to be careful to keep doctors' appt's I would just ignore when i was younger. Have to keep up on all that whether I like it or not.
BUT, at work I do feel more empowered, or maybe entitled would be a better word, to speak up and say my peace. Being in the group of experienced veterans gives one a slightly elevated status and I am enjoying that. Along with that goes the increased pleasure I get from saying "no"--no, I cannot do vounteer work this weekend. I am going riding!

| how do you feel about getting old? Posted: 9/4/2006 4:09:18 PM | I just turned 50. It does not bother me . I enjoy the new found respect when people heard I was fifty at work. And I am having a great time with my grandchildren and people I meet. Hey you may not be young as you used to be but neither are the guys on here. | |

| how do you feel about getting old? Posted: 9/4/2006 5:09:20 PM | Hi "Are you there", 1. One of the few good things about getting older is being able to retire and do as we please. 2. Nobody is getting younger. 3. Death is inevitable. 4. I am not afraid of death, but I AM afraid of dying. I don't want to go through a prolonged painful illness, But I guess nobody does. 5. However, it is not really our decision, is it? Ron aka Reteach63 | |

| how do you feel about getting old? Posted: 9/4/2006 7:55:28 PM | I agree with you on a lot of that Reteach. I am not afraid of death either. Heck when you are dead you don't have a problem in the world. Dying scares me if it happens to be painful and living to the point where I am not much more than a vegetable being pushed around in a wheel chair could scare me. I think at 85 I will take up skydiving but insist on packing my own chute. If you saw my bed you would know why I am sure it would never open.
A lot of people look at retirement the same way you do. I enjoy what I do and would look at retirement with about the same excitement that I do when thinking about being pushed around in a wheelchair in my 90's. My targeted retirement age is 80 and if I feel good I may chicken out before then and just keep working till I drop.

| how do you feel about getting old? Posted: 9/4/2006 8:05:42 PM | | Getting old is a relief to me. It tells me the race is almost over and I can see the finish line. The health that I am in will probably being the curtain down for me in about 8 years, so it's almost over for me, and there's a strange kind of peace that I feel when I consider my mortality. | |

| how do you feel about getting old? Posted: 9/5/2006 2:54:39 PM | I can remember when I thought 30 was over the hill. Being 40 didn't bother me, being 50 didn't bother me - but for some reason becoming 60 is scary. Generally I can still bend like I used to - it's the unbending that hurts. Previously someone said getting old alone is the bad part - I have to agree with that. Seems to me one of the most bothersome parts is knowing I have less time left and wishing I hadn't p'd so much away when I was younger. | |
