We must remember, the Government takes a bigger Tax Slice out of higher prices.
Why would the Government force the reduction of prices, when the Consumer is WILLING TO PAY ?

you may have misread my post....we are the highest BEFORE taxes!

...and because we must have fuel....we are willing to pay. WHY do we pay MORE THAN anyone else in North America, and some European countries??? I'm not talking about Canada when i say "we"...I'm talking about the lower mainland!!!! We pay WAY above anyone else in Canada...WHY??????

One thing that alot of people don't realize is that the provincial gas taxes are not all just X cents/liter but some are actually X PERCENT/liter.

If the cost of the gas goes up, so does the amount of tax that the governments collect on it, too. Why would they want lower costing gas?

Transit pays the taxes too. If the government really wanted to get people to use the bus, they should make Transit exempt from those taxes. Maybe our transit fares won't go up so often.

Yes, taxes are usually a % of the wholesale price.

And BCers pay more because "We are the rich province." I think the Provincial and Transit Taxes add a larger slice?

I could be wrong ?

I usually MUST have a car for my work, therefore I MUST have gas. I would almost be strarving if I lived in Toronto today with their problem of getting the gas in the first place.
It is said that the gas shortage in southern Ontario is due to the CN Rail strike. It wouldn't suprise me one day to find out that it was Alberta sending Ottawa a message: "Don't mess with OUR gas". Ya I know that is probably stretching it a bit but hell, don't you think our leaders stretch things a bit sometime? (certainly not their own personal spending habits) Like just a wee bit though.
I am not sure what the price is in Alberta as I haven't been driving for a bit. I can assure you it isn't $1.06/litre though. But I will tell you that a small ULTRA-right wing group in Alberta has decided to ship Alberta's jobs and future south in bulk with the bulk crude instead of not refining it in Canada.

And now we are paying a dollar fifty and that is without the carbon tax. I saw a Smart Car the other day and almost thought it might be a good option for me. I would feel very vulnerable driving a car so small, so I don't think I will be getting one.

I'm extremely angry over this, and there isn't any justifiable reason for it either. Anyone with me? What are your thoughts on this subject.

YUP, they are just plain, price GOUGING. Unfortunately, to a certain point, they have got us all by the B A L L S, and it is to fill there GREEDY poclets, with our hard earned money, at our expense.

And what do they do, just sit and do NOTHING, in their own easy comfort, and push the prices up and down,. Up once we are locked in, and down, hwen we are not locked in, all to make their big bucks, that they don't have cut a swept over of hard work at all, like the rest of us DO.

everyone ****es and complains about the price of gas. Yet, has anyone attempted to do anything about it? (aside from passing around those stupid chainmails about "Dont buy gas on ___day". Unless you're willing to find other modes of transportation, there's not a whole heck of a lot that you are doing for the cause. Meanwhile, the gas companies are rolling around in their masses of money, laughing at all of you gasoline addicts. Our society has become far too reliant on automobiles. Ride a bicycle, or walk more.

^^^ nice idea, but with the increase of rents with all this pre-olympics hype more and more people are being pushed into the suburbs just to be able to afford to house themselves. with a longer commute, their reliance on gas (and the hit on their wallet for fuel costs) becomes greater. i don't think it's fair to use the "ride a bicycle, or walk more" angle for those in this type of situation...and for those who will doubtless proclaim transit the solution, please keep in mind, the further away from the vancouver downtown core you go the worse the transit schedules, connections, and routes become.

ultimately, yes, the oil and gas will dry up...and as a result, auto manufacturers will have to get their heads out of their a$$es to finally get on with the production of viable alternative fuel vehicles...they've been promising them for decades, and now they finally have the incentive due to the desperation of the consumer marketplace.

I agree with K3vlar on this one,if it really is a question of supply and demand & greedy gov't taxing the hell out of us
maybe we should cut back to the bare min instead of just ****ing and continuing to be consumerist pigs.

You can totally tell that they manipulate the prices.....its the long weekend and gas hasn't increased nearly as much as it has on previous long weekends....and why? b/c the carbon tax comes in tomorrow...so you can bet the gas companies are gonna bump it the two and bit cents AND some for themsleves...its disgusting...it has nothing to do with supply and demand...its simply hype by some idiots somewhere who have nothing better to do.

When gas goes up the gas companies raise their prices. When it goes down they say they can't lower the price b/c they are selling the gas they bought at the higher price. Yet, when gas prices drop they do s*&#!

They know they have us by 'our balls' as someone said above and really there isn't anything we can do. We aren't a society that is passionate enough to stage protests (europe) - we just sit here and keep taking it and they keep shoveling it out b/c they know we wont do anything about it.

Whew! Okay...done my rant :)

What really sucks is living in Boonville where you can’t walk anywhere. Like my friends calls me up and she wants to meet me for coffee. Well the round trip is close to an hour in traffic and the gas gauge just keeps on going down. All that fuel for a 2 dollar cup of coffee? K it wasn’t that bad as she paid! Lol!
So as we all know gas always goes up in the summer but is there any news about it coming down in the winter?

Complaining without taking action is a waste of time,I bike and bus more now .
It may take a little longer and I don't really like being on crowded public transit
with a bunch of ill smelling freaks either but at least I'm saving money and decreasing
the demand for gas.

People who are now walking, riding, or busing AND believe they are making a difference are absolutely right. They're making a difference in their own lives. They're allowing themselves more time to get where they're going.

It's not going to make much of a difference in anything else other than their own personal cost.

Many of us don't have the luxury of time and we are forced to self propel ourselves through our daily schedules at a quicker pace. We choose gasoline as our propellant because site to site transfer is still sci fi quasi-reality.

Whether we use little gas in our daily life or a lot we are all affected economically as prices continue to rise across the board.

It is nothing more than greed and corruption and the only thing you can do about these things is to change the rules. Starting with the rules of accountability. Make those in positions of power account to their actions.

Just because we vote them in does not give them the right to not accept responsibility for the position. Civil service was never intended to be an exclusive club for furthering ones own personal agenda. It was intended as a calling to a civic duty.

Civil unrest is always the catalyst to change. People always have the power to change things but only when there are enough willing to lose their freedom/life. Those willing to lose their freedom become the shining stars of change and the restless masses are those who push forward those beacons of change.

Whether it's our gas, our food, our comfort, or our time, either way we're all being taxed
to our deaths. Freedom is a delusion.

The question remains; are you agitated enough to count yourself as one of the unrested (2jobs,no life) and if so; are you brilliant enough to become one of the beacons the restless can gather behind in the great struggle for change?

I guess another question would be...is civil unrest even allowed anymore?

You are right, gas prices are a frickin' joke. I say tax the crap out of their profits, and give it back to us in tax breaks, or dividend cheques, as you would receive if you were a shareholder in a company doing well enough to pay it's shareholders a dividend. I also say if we boycotted certain gas companies it would have an effect too. I personally will not buy gas at Petro Can, Shell and Esso. Now, how many litres, at 2.41 cents, equals $100?

What? Seriously? Are you guys crying that we're getting taxed heavily by the government so they can send our tax dollars where they're needed (Quebec) because that's a load of monkey balls. If you think B.C. isn't doing everything right you're way off, we have Insurance, Power, Cable and Phone Monopolies which is seriously the way to do it.

You know, ICBC has huge surpluses incase they have a lot of pay outs, we have a lot of payouts this year so they're upping the fees, which sure they said they wouldn't but don't complain we could be paying half as much somewhere else!

Somewhere there's an oil executive that doesn't have 3 summer homes, he needs to post record profits again next year or they might try and tell us gas price is only going up because it's the cost of doing buisness.

Man... Seriously guys 2 things, A) I'm from Ontario originally but f*ck we're gettin screwed here, B) someone make Quebec leave Canada, also before they go send some french girls round to my house, that accent does it to me.

For Arguments sake, my dad lives in Langley and Works in Vancouver, he can't change jobs, too many years with the company to throw away benefits, we can't afford a house down town.. I mean WOW expensive, the public transit from langley to vancouver basically take almost 4 hours each way if he wants to get there on time, 8 hours a day on public transit 9 hours at the office, 17 hours out of the house a day, that doesn't even leave enough for a full night's sleep. Maybe he should bike to work and just not sleep at all.
