Definitions of upstate:
adverb: in or toward the northern parts of a state
Example: "He lives upstate New York"
ALBANY is Midstate.. WATERTOWN is also Mid State!.. I mean I for the life of me can NOT refer people that live in ALbany as "upstate ny".. that would totally be um.. what is the word i am looking for?! A LIE!
Hehe!.. I mean i live on the Canadian Vermont border.. right on Lake Champlain.. and I cant be any further UPSTATE that that or i would be in Canada!.. and ALBANY is a hell of a long ways SOUTH of me. ( please notice I said "South" and NOT "North" as the definition of UPSTATE refers to Northern Parts of state!
If i was to say i am going UPSTATE and head to albany?!?! Would that be right?!? no it wouldnt!
So all you people who who live in ALbany or in that regions, and refer to yourselves as living in UPSTATE NY.. please look up the definition first before making such claims.... unless of course you think the State of NY completely STOPS at Albany and people like us dont exist! which i have to inform you that it doesnt.. believe me there is more to NY, then what you think,,, there is alot more land "UP", "ABOVE" "NORTH" (how ever you wanna preceive it) thats STILL part of good old NY! .. :)
heck i believe there is a section called "Adirondack Mountains".. did you forget that they exist? hehe | |

It's all changed now on my most recent visit to see my "In-Laws" that still live in Albany/Schenectady County on CountyLine Rd. Thats the Capital District.. and everythang 100 miles ABOVE the BIG rotten APPLE is a LOT better place 2 LIVE in NYSTATE!! | |

We have a house in the Catskills and then I am upstate. I think if you are in, say Buffalo, you are "all the way over there in Buffalo". But where I live..... I am not on LI and I am not in NYC (though I grew up there) so I don't know where the hell I am but this is sure not upstate! ROFL! | |

God help us if our legislators ever for any reason decide they need to pass a law to give it a legal definition. So upstate all remains relative to where you are. If you live within a stones throw of the canadian border does that make everyone that lives south of you a down stater? And why is south considered down and north considered up? Living in Schoharie county we are sort of 'tweenies. We arent quite the Capital District, nor really central ny. If I tell people I'm in leatherstocking country they start asking if i own thigh high boots and whips and chains. No one reads JF Cooper anymore I guess. | |

Posted: 2/1/2007 5:34:16 AM | Taxidancer.. first of all wikipedia is only peopel just stating thier opinions.. basicaly the readers are the writers so you cant really go by what they say. They should read the actual defination of what UPSTATE means.. before assumimg anything.
And second.. I live within a stones throw from Canada.. heck i live in a Stones Toss! hehe So i HAVE to look at peopel that lives anywhere from me as DOWNSTATE cause they ARE!! hehe..but really i DONT look at it that way.. downstate is wayyyyyyy "DOWN" below ALBANY!
But seriously when you do think about it tho.. I cant say that i am going "UP" TO ALBANY or GOING "OVER" TO NEW YORK CITY, now can i?? that doesnt sound normal does it?!
If you look at maps which is what people SHOULD BE useing in the first place they will see a compass on it.. and the compass NORTH ALWAYS points UP.. i have never seen any map that is otherwise!
A law cant be passed unless they LITTERALLY want to change the actual definition of the word UPSTATE. I think you or they would have to take good old Webster to court to do that!.. and i dont think Webbie will loose.. hehe!
If it was up to everyone.. they ALREADY say ALBANY is UPSTATE.. when in all reality according to Legal defintions ALBANY NY is considered MID STATE so if anyone doesnt like to be corrected .. then if they are goign to ALBANY then they should refer to as MID STATE or JUST PLAIN old ALBANY! hehe
If your or anyone who consider ALBANY as UPSTATE.. then you are the people that have never been to the NORTH country... NY is BIGGER then you think! heck.. i think i did mention a MAP.. there is maps all over the internet to view.. and you can even print them out too!!.. Correct me if i am wrong but they ALL SHOW me that there is more NY STATE NORTH of ALBAnY! and yes NORTH is UP! :) | |

So if your going to quote Merriam-Webster you should read all the definitions they give. MW online didnt define "upstate New York" specifically, but it did for "upstater" which is:

Anything North of Saratoga is "Adirondack".
Anything South of Selkirk is "Downstate"
Anything North of Yonkers is "Upstate".
Anything between Ithica and Schenectady is "Leatherstocking country".
Anything West of Utica is "Western NY"
