| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 7/27/2007 5:05:24 PM | I have an American Bulldog and he is a handful. I agree ABD's are sweethearts but training has been a trial to train. They can also be aggressive to other dogs. I also have a lab mix and a doxie mix and have to watch the ABD around them. Would I get another one? No but loooove this one :) I think my favorite dogs have been spaniels and I would get another in a heartbeat........ except I already have 3 dogs:) | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 8/2/2007 6:08:16 PM | My three favorite breeds in order of preference are:
American Bulldog: Immensely intelligent, extremely friendly, and very, very brave (as in mine has already saved at least 1 person's life from a rattlesnake.) APBT: Again, very smart, very friendly, loves people, and great jogging buddy Rott: Just fantastic
I like dogs that are well suited to the weather here. All three of those dogs handle heat and exercise very well.

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 10/14/2007 12:31:20 PM | I have always loved northern breeds. Akita, Husky etc...
Currently however I am on the hunt for a chocolate lab for my daughter, it was supposed to be a birthday present, but when I went to the puppy tree, it was barren of potential.

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/4/2008 10:16:37 AM | Sorry to hear about losing your Malinois - glad you still have your dust-mop - JK, or just kidding as my munchkins say. One of their favorite dogs was a l-h dach, also a shelter rescue.
My favorite(s) tough call here. We had a magnificent Weimaraner when I was young in WI. His pedigree name was blah-blah-blah-blah REX and he was a young prince who grew into LORD of all he surveyed. He was spectacular w/us, playing till we tired -lots of stories if you're interested, yet most significant was: A mean boxer got loose and chased one of my 8 brothers. He tore his corkscrew out of the ground (and my dad put it in solid to prevent him getting loose) and that boxer never came out of his back yard again, unescorted - my brother and his friends were fine. The funniest story about him is the name he answered to and why.
My tie for first was a mix - Chow-G Shepherd-Rott - you could see all 3 in that order. He was also a rescue but from friends of a friend. My girls wanted a lapdog, so I was really not interested, but because it was a friend I drove across the bay to look at him. He was incredible - thought he was a 75-80lb lap dog which really hurt when I had a rod put in my right lower leg. He just wanted to cuddle/help me, but my leg didn't want any part of him or anyone for a while.
Hope to hear from you - my buddies and I are supposed to play in some tournaments and on a few of the courses in your area. Would like to chat to see if we'd both like to meet at some point. I get to Tracy a lot to visit former neighbors/friends and then out to Manteca/Stockton and down to Modesto on occasion - an old friend moved to Socal almost a year ago. Let me know what you think/how you feel.
All the best n bye for now, Via con DIOS, always and ALL WAYS!!!... Joe

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/4/2008 7:14:29 PM | I have a long list of likes...near the top is the good ol' mutt! Of purebred dogs: Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog, Borzoi, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Bull Terrier, Collie, Dachshund, Doberman Pinscher, Flat Coated Retriever, French Bulldog, German Shepherd Dog, Giant Schnauzer, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Greyhound, Irish Setter, Irish Wolfhound, Newfoundland, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Pug, Rottweiler, Scottish Deerhound, Scottish Terrier, Shetland Sheepdog.
Breeds I don't like: So called "DESIGNER" dogs which are just poorly bred mutts, 'teacup' or 'pocket' anything, and yappy dogs.

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/8/2008 11:20:44 PM | | I like all critters, but am partial to Shelties. Beautiful, smart, gentle and usually good with kids. When my son was 18 months old we got one. She adopted him. One of the cutiest things would be to watch her run circles around him when he would venture too close to the sidewalk when playing out in the yard. However, dealing with the hair could be a nuisance. | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/9/2008 10:18:34 PM | I am a big fan of the alpha dog...
1) They continue to try to lick there own ^%$&@ after years of failure.
2)Good sex is defined by the value of it over getting off the couch, sitting the beer down, and moving over 25 feet to the nearest bedroom.
3) We would rather have a t-bone then a maticulously cooked top chef appetizer.
We are the alpha dogs, the man dogs, the big breed on the block!

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/10/2008 7:37:13 AM | Well this topic is quite interesting! I recently just had to put down my 15 year old golden retriever/ collie mix. Wow she was a fantastic dog. Never left the yard, kind happy and she did not bark excessively, Nor did she jump on people. There wasn't any excessive compulsive disorder with a ball or toy. I could and did frequently walk her off leash, she trained very easily. She had no interests in Cats and got along well with other dogs.
If I decide to get another dog I might think of more exotic breeds. Such as Saluki, Afghan hound, Sheltie, Long hair Dachsund/mini, Collie, Curlie coated retriever, Gordon Setter, Pappilion, standard Poodle and maybe another cross breed. Though I am not ready for this commitment at the moment.
I just wanted to this time to say, It's ok to cook and feed your dog people food. Corn on the cob is what the put in most dog food, Avocados are a great treat, Boil a chicken for the dog, beef livers are always on sale and even Potatoes.
Dog food with people food seemed to work fine for my dog. She did have allergies but seem to overcome that problem.
Dogs are fun great friends!

Corn is the #1 allergen in domestic canines, and it's also nigh indigestible for them. Avocados can apparently be toxic. Cooked bones should NEVER be fed.
Dogs can have human food, but you need to carefully research what is and isn't safe or good for them.

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/10/2008 7:02:42 PM | I've had a Samoyed - the most happy dog in the world, great companion and great with little kids (mine grew up with him)...Rottweiler - my most recent - best friend! Very loyal and protective, and geez, louise, what a baby! They're both gone now, but I'm so glad they were part of our family... | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/11/2008 1:11:10 AM | I'm a real Pug convert too.
Sort of ended up with one by accident and fell in love quickly. Winston was my sweet, loving pal for 13 of his 14 years. Gentle, affectionate. My little smiling shadow.
When I lost Winston's 'sister' (my beloved Peaches, a large Terrier mutt) I found a local Los Angeles-Based Pug Rescue and brought home a fawn girl (I think she's a quarter Beagle) who I named Penelope Pittstop (named for the Hanna-Barbera Cartoon Character) but she answers to Penny.
When Winston died in his sleep (cuddled up to me) a few months later, it wasn't long before I returned to the same Rescue group (Little Angels Pug Rescue) for a GORGEOUS black boy who I named Roland (after a Stephen King character). Even though I wasn't over losing Winston, I knew it wouldn't be fair to leave such a social creature like my Penny alone all day. Dogs are pack animals after all. She needed company.
That was about a year ago and I can't tell you how much I love these precious creatures. Watching them play and romp together is better than anything on TV.
Pugs aren't for everyone though. They're too sweet to be effective watch dogs. They're too big to be little lap dogs, and they really like to be played with. If an overly affectionate dog gets on your nerves, I wouldn't recommend a Pug. (Penny likes to jump on you without warning and lick your face) Also, like other short-snouted breeds (like Boxers and Bulldogs) they don't do well in hot weather.
But sweet natured, playful, affectionate, great with kids, love to cuddle, easy to train....Pugs are that and more.
...and they're freakin' adorable.

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/11/2008 9:12:15 PM | | I've always wanted an Airedale Terrier, although I doubt I'll be getting one any time soon. Every time I see someone who has one I ask about it, and they always seem to have great things to say. The dogs seem smart--especially when they****their head and look right at you, usually wagging like crazy as they do. Not much gets past them, and they have a fine reputation as guard dogs. They're also pretty good with kids. The main drawback is their oily coat, although it makes them good water dogs. I've read the answer is just to give 'em a bath a little more often than with most dogs. | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/12/2008 12:49:15 AM | | I have 5 fur kids right now and each is the best. 3 labs, a border collie labx and a papillon (guess who is the alpha!). All are rescues. I have had purebreds (the labs, pap and a golden) and mixes ("terrorist" terriers, Bubba hounds, cow dogs and "E all of the above") and I wouldn't give up any! I go to work just to keep them in dog food - I make their food, a chicken stew with everything (By the way, avocados are great for the coat...no chocolate or onions, though). Keep trying to get them to go to work but they always say " Mom, we don't have opposing thumbs! Now give us the clicker, we want to watch 'Animal Planet' " The lab I have is a retired Search and Rescue dog I trained... still wants to go to work whenever he hears a helicopter! I always trust their instinct as far as people are concerned. They adore the man in my life! I can't imagine my life without dogs...as they say, no outfit is complete without dog hair! | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/12/2008 12:55:36 AM | | english setters (field not show) are very, very silly and affectionate, but always getting into mischief. still, i deliberately got my second one. i also have a flat coated retriever mix. they are herding dogs, very good at warning of pending dangers--but also very ocd and always worried about getting the flock in order, therefore chasing the cats all around the house! mine was also a rescue dog who was traumatized on a highway as a pup, so finally we got him elavil (versus two thousand dollars for mri's!) and now he is very happy and way less alpha on the other animals. if he had not been traumatized himself, i think his breed would rate as a good medical companion dog--eg warn of pending seizures, seeing eye dog, etc. | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/12/2008 7:55:24 AM | I love all kinds of dogs! At the shelter where I volunteer, there is anything from the rare purebred designer pets to the more frequent lineage guessing-game subjects that makes for the 'how'd you happen, little guy?' speculation ear scratches...
I find that just about all of them are perfectly lovable, but the Heinz 57 Mutt makes for the better pet, most of the time, IMO.
Mutts have less genetic predisposition toward injuries and organ defects because of the diverse gene pool, and also a tendency to have less behavioral issues ... The former is commonly referred to as "hybrid vigor." And, they tend to lean towards the middle of the bell curve for size as adults which is my preference in dogs. I also like a little surprise as to what they will grow up to be... That's just how I roll!
Please check out your local animal shelter and/or local Humane Society FIRST if you are ready to expand your family! You won't regret giving it a shot. You can even put in requests for specific breeds and have them call you when available at some places. Check back frequently, and bring ALL household members with you before bringing a new little guy home. Who knows... you may even decide to volunteer!
And, please take your time choosing your pet. A new family member isn't an impulse 'purchase!' Thanks!
