I have to agree whole heartedly with JadeMuse about checking your local Humane Society/ASPCA/Shelter. I have volunteered with the ASPCA off and on for several years, and it so heart breaking to see how many wonderful animals have been abandoned.
Make sure you do your research when it comes to breeds that interest you. We had one guy return a Mastiff, because it got too big for his house/yard. Uh, Mastiffs are huge dogs-what did you expect? You can google the breed online and find plenty of info for making your decision. Also keep in mind that several breeds have rescue groups for dogs that get returned.

Mystery is magic, don't you think?

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/12/2008 1:51:39 PM | I spoke of Pugs earlier, but my all time favorite dog was a German Shepard-sized Terrier Mutt.
She was found running around a desert area in So Cal by a Nurse. After a detailed but unsucessful attempt to find her owner, the nurse put an ad in the local paper. I was looking at the time, she sounded ideal and just loved her at first sight. Ideal didn't even come close.
Her coat was sort of cream colored with a little orange and I named her (sweet) Peaches. No groomer or vet could ever agree on what she was a mix of (NOW they can do a DNA test and pinpoint it. grrr) but it doesn't really matter. If I could clone anything, it would be my Peaches.
That dog was the love of my life for 11 years (a long life for a 70 LB dog.) Incredibly sweet, devoted, smart, playful, happy, and bonded to me in particular. She would wag her tail IN HER SLEEP if she heard my voice. Her last Eathly act was licking my hand and looking at my with her loving and soulful eyes. (Chokes me up typing this though it's been a few years. It probably always will).
I never refered to her as a Mutt or Mixed Breed, or even a Hybrid. I thought of her as an Alloy. A blending of two things that far surpassed either.

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/12/2008 5:10:00 PM | I don't want to argue against the awesomeness of mutts because I think they're great, but I cringe when I see this reasoning used: "Mutts have less genetic predisposition toward injuries and organ defects because of the diverse gene pool, and also a tendency to have less behavioral issues ... The former is commonly referred to as "hybrid vigor.""
Mixed breed dogs are prone to the same issues purebred dogs are...sometimes in multiples because of the breed mix...if you breed a Labrador and a German Shepherd, you can almost guarantee that the pups are going to have hip problems since the breeds of BOTH parents are prone to them.
In WELL BRED purebred dogs, the bloodlines of the potential parents are carefully looked over to ensure that even if the lines are related, there is no doubling up of undesired traits, including short lifespan, cancer, allergies, etc. Many genetic issues such as hip dysplasia and juvenile cataracts can be tested for, and the parents are tested as being free of these issues before being bred. This doesn't always guarantee a healthy pup, but it goes a long way in stacking the odds in your favor instead of playing a canine version of Russian Roulette.
Having said that, all dogs get old and all dogs get sick, and unless you 'need' a purebred dog for something, I think you should consider a mutt, too!

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 6/12/2008 9:13:19 PM | i agree to never purchase a dog. my mutt was rescued, but my english setter was also rescued--hardly any flesh on her when found! now, if only someone would rescue me | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/7/2008 3:55:40 PM | | I own a mix black lab with Aussie she is a great friend of 8 years now sad to say she has cancer, her friend that she has is a pure black lab 15 month old and he is wonderful. Use to have a lab and shar-pei mix what a baby he was but a terrific dog as well.. I use to train and show mix bred dogs only where they were permitted and the ones i shown did better then some fo the AKC dogs. But I think my next dog will be a Corgi -- They are very smart and intelliegent like labs are. But then i like all dogs (almost) All dogs need to be loved and given a good home >>> | |

Oops...Sorry Lancelot. I thought you were talking about the nurse when you wrote this.

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/7/2008 8:06:59 PM | I like those little guys the girls like to stuff into their hand bags. If I were a dog that's what I would like to be. ..one of those tiny hairy guys with my little bad hair day head pokin out of a Prada bag... | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/8/2008 12:04:46 AM | | I would have to say a Chow my last dog was a Black Chow and the one before was a Red Chow these type of dogs are the best in my mind. | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/8/2008 11:37:23 PM | Chihuahuas are the best:
1. They are small and love to cuddle 24/7. 2. They sleep under the covers, with you, 24/7. (they are natural burrowers). 3. They attack you with kisses when you come home. (approximately 12,000 kisses per minute.) 4. They are small and can go anywhere (movies, parties, supermarket, etc.) 5. They fit in small bags, stick their little heads out, and attract every female within 10 mile radius. 6. They want to be on your lap 24/7. 7. They fly free. (Okay, maybe not free, $70 domestic, $125 international). 8. They can be mean as hell and will take on any dog, any size, anywhere. 9. They take 2 years to eat one bag of dogfood. 10. They can fit in the most cute of little sweaters (and attract every female within 10 mile radius).
See? Chihuahuas are the best. (Most love per lb.)

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/14/2008 8:36:18 AM | | My favorite breed of dog is whoever I fall in love with at the pound - usually a mix. I do tend toward medium to bigger dogs, though. Through the years I've had a (non pure bred, all rescues) German Sheppard and a black lab. Both were wonderful! That lab was so smart it amazed me! Probably could have done algebra if she had had a way to hold the pencil. Also had a complete and total mix-mutt that had more personality than most people. | |
|
| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/14/2008 4:11:02 PM | | I prefer dogs with some wolf in them, they tend to be far more intelligent & more laid back. My last pair didn't seem to have very much *dog* in them at all. Still have one, looking for 2 more. | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/15/2008 1:08:42 PM | I am a major dog lover. I do rescue as well. I go to the pound and I take a dog out fo there, train it and rehome it. I feel I am doing something good for animals doing that. Currently, I own a pit bull, chihauaha, and a rat terrier. I never live without a rat terrier. I absolutely love them. I also love pit bulls. My current pit is so beautiful and gentle. The chihauaha beats her up daily and she never growls at her. Such a beautiful dog. People should research breeds of dogs before adopting to see if the breed will meld with their lifestyle. | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/16/2008 7:02:33 AM | Defintely the Border Collie. As far as I'm concerned, the best breed and the perfect dog. Sassy, a registered BC (now 9 yo) was adopted through rescue so you CAN get purebreds though rescue.
Now my other BC, I bought- born on the day I met my girlfriend (Valentines day). He's now 8 months and a pure a**hole. Maybe BC's AREN't the best breed ...

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/16/2008 7:24:32 AM | German Shepherd! Best all round dog imo. Smart, loyal, loving, great protector of family, active, love to play, easily trained. I had a wonderful GSD Zeus who was really smart, could open the door by turing the door knobs!! Was great with my daughters as they grew up and had a keen sense of ability to judge character in people. By this, I mean if he didn't like someone it usually was for a good reason! Those people he didn't like had drug or alcohol or violence or mental problems and I guess he could sense it and would act defensive around them.
He was a great guard dog and companion and I am glad he was there when my daughters were growing up. I miss him still to this day, years later. He was one of a kind!
German Shepherd dogs! Best all round pet

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/16/2008 9:52:58 AM | | I've been owned by many dogs over the years; Collie, Basset Hound (the goofiest...she was hysterically funny), Boxer/Lab/Golden Retriever, Rottweiler/Mastiff (sweet tempered and gentle as a lamb). But my favorite was Brandy, a 3/4 Husky - 1/4 wolf. Again, gentle, smart, loving, great with the kids, and always happy to be with us. This was in Alaska, so she was well adapted to the climate. Currently sharing quarters with brother and sister Chow/Who the Hell Knows mixes. Their mother was a ranch dog who was apparently VERY popular with every male dog in a ten mile radius. The male looks more like a mastiff, with the chow tail and tongue. The female has long black silky hair and the chow tail. Both are gentle clowns. | |

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/16/2008 6:41:32 PM | My Dad's dog was a mix of Newfoundland (black furred) and Chow (black tongued). He would stand at the glass doorwall at night and you wouldn't see him till he opened his mouth and showed those sharp teeth! Used to scare the crap outta us.
He really was a sweet dog.

| Favorite Dog Breed? Posted: 9/21/2008 8:05:50 PM | | I know it might seem typical for a person that looks the way I do, but I love Pit Bulls. They're so sweet & kind if u show them love. People that raise pits to be mean do a serious disservice to the breed. | |
