I have a mutt. She's mostly****r spaniel. A rescue from the pound.

Any dog that you save is the best dog you can have. I had a lhasa apso foster dog before and he was great in his own way. But my little baby****r is just a darling.

I have always wanted a Great Pyrenees since a friend had one in Spain ( I was stationed there). But if I got one at my age, it might be a very good question about whom was walking whom...... *S*

Wow this is a tough one, because I don't think there is a dog breed out there that I don't think is absolutely adorable. I currently have a Yorkshire Terrorist uhm, Terrier, sorry, Terrier, and a Deer Chihuahua that was a rescue off the Freeway, which is also his name... I love Malteses, and may actually get one once I move, now that I've had a Chihuahua I think they are wonderful dogs, very sweet, and loving, a little twitchy but that's typical for a small breed. I think all the Toy breeds though are my absolute favorite, if I had to choose.

This is a great thread...

My FAVORITE dog is the Beagle. My dog Godiva is the best little funny friend. She is not perfectly mannered...although she doesn't jump on people or bite. She does bark a lot when I'm gone. Anyway, I like her the way she IS.

She thinks I am the smartest person in the whole world

I am partial to my Boxers. We are down to one, since our old guy died in September. He hung on for a while - I'm pretty sure because he was just not sure the 2 year old pup was ready to take the reigns here in the family protection business, but she has stepped up to the plate. They are great and gentle with any kids at all but I would hate to think what would happen if an adult tried to harm a kid anywhere near them.

...I'm not much of a dog person, either.

If Smart is what you prefer, then the German Shorthair Pointer takes the cake!
Hmmmm and to think of it, probably the hot dogs too!!…..gottah love’m!!

GSPs are great if you have the room, great house companions, very bitable, can learn anything, and if you hunt, don’t go out with out one.

I have two, Oochee and Samson, they are litter mates and are so wonderful and yet so different from each other… If you dare to try one, you may never go back!!

Hey, the look like little boxers and sounds like they have these traits in common as well -- do they fart, too???

surprisingly, had always figured a "dog" should be bigger than the cat but we've had a JackChi past couple years and he definitely grew on me and is more fun than the cats!
(JackRussell Terrier and Chihuahua mix) - yes he's a jumper & a butt biter! lol

Labs are universally great!
Have a few friends who have always owned golden retrievers and sware by them (usually men)

If had the room to let it run around to its heart's content, would get a Border Collie.

Saw a beagle puppy a few months ago and then on one of the dog shows - adorable!
Heard they can be hyper and noisy/ barky though.
If you know anything about them... message me info, cuz am seriously considering getting one, once finish the move and get settled.
Thanks!

He is so smart and handsome. He is determined to make everyone happy. He can clap is front paws together and dances in a circle. He can also ring a bell when he needs out. His name is Cosmo and I miss him terribly.

Schnauzers are far and away better than any other breed. They are smart, loyal, noble-looking, friendly, and like to scrap with other dogs. There are three different sub-breeds to cater to owners who like big dogs (Giant Schnauzers), medium (Standard Schnauzers), and smaller dogs (Miniature Schnauzers). Schnauzers are easy to train; make good show dogs (or just household pets); and can control their natural digging tendencies very well.

Schnauzers are the best breed.

I like German Shepherds. My first one was named Lady. She was always very protective--and not at all aggressive. Her bark was scary, but I don't think she could have hurt a flea.

Basenji - What more could you want in a dog?
Short hair and barely sheds.
Medium sized.
Smarter than most people.
Loyal as they get.
And they don't bark.

Portuguese Water Dogs: A true companion dog, always happy to come when called,
funny, loving, smart! A Large Dog in a Medium Package. They are strong, tireless workers. I like em best wet!
I have 7 puppies right now! Just opened their eyes!

Standard poodles: Smart, but don't mess with me if she doesn't know you!

I hate when people say that purebred does are stupid or messed up. It shows such a lack of understanding. Yet these are the same people that say I got a sheltie X corgi mix. If purebreds are messed up, why reference them at all?
Thanks for listening.......................

I have two Pekingese dogs. One person described them, aptly, as "bedslippers with eyes.

They are soft, cuddlly and very friendly, and they help break the proverbial ice for my voice students. One is black and one is white, and when they run around in little circles together, they look like a furry yin/yang.

My first Peke was an elderly crippled dog named Shep with an atrocious coat, elbows that stuck out like Popeye's, and a perfect temperament. He was almost impossible to feed because he would not eat anything unless it was amazing, like hamburger or mozzarella, and keeping weight on him was a daily struggle. However, he went in the car with me everywhere for the two years I had him; he sat under my feet when I drove and waited patiently for my return. I think he thought the car was his house. He would sleep in the bottom of the baby carriage. He wasn't much for walks; he would go about ten feet, sit down and give up. He had a littermate, Fluffy, who would lay across the top of the baby carriage, looking like a fur stole.

I used to own cats, but when I first met a small dog, I realized they were what I was looking for. Cats are nice, but they snuggle with you on their whim, not yours. You can pick up a dog and you have a topically applied heating pad, local anesthetic, soporific... Looooove Pekes!!!

A few weeks ago my dog that I spoke of in post 120 of this thread passed away. I could have written so much more great stuff about him! He was terrific!

Most reading this would get a chill if I told you his breed. He was a mixture of black Chow and German Sheppard. Two breeds that seem to have a lot of people afraid of them. But I can tell you, at least with this one, once he understood that someone was okay, he was the gentlest of dogs I've ever known, and with good manners. He was also smart and attentive, and gave good advice too. I'd definitely get another of this mix again.

Sorry to hear about your dog...

I had a Husky once... couldn't keep her from getting out of the yard... she liked running the golf corse behind us... Would find her down at the beach...

Anyway, again, sorry to hear that.

^ Thanks Jack. Actually am okay with it. He lived to a ripe age for his breed and was healthy and happy until the moment he went; even that morning he performed his chorse of barking at the gardener, etc. ! The best part about him is his spirit.......and that part lives on quite easily within.
THAT's the key to getting a great dog! Look at its spirit first!
(btw: the day we got him, we were really just there in the store for cat food.....what a treasure to find however we found out after just spending even just a few minutes playing and working with him!....a few weeks later I did have one moment of concern with him, but once that was determined, the relationship really took off in great directions)

I had two dogs that were shephard and chow mix. They were siblings. Buttons and Chewy. They were great. They had 3 yorkshire terriers for brothers. They all got along great. I miss them all dearly. I now have two more yorkies females. They are my kids.
