What does everyone think of the spirit of '67 celebration? Sure its the 40th anniversary of the last cup and nice to honor it but some say its more about Dave Keon returning? You agree? I think its nice but I am more interested in the leafs winning another cup lol
Speaking of celebrations Happy Birthday Mats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The comeback kids can make it to the playoffs, one game at a time, noo sweat !!!
|
| Leafs Posted: 2/14/2007 11:37:07 AM | Noo Sweat? NO SWEAT???? This is a mediocre team and it has a way of making average goalies like Tim Thomas of Boston look like George Vesina. The next 5 games should all be "Get-able" points. They just blew one against the Isles (who are coming back up in another 5) plus Boston, Oilers and Philly 2X. That is the good news. The bad news is that unless they can win these games they don't stand a chance. These are teams behind them and if they start giving away points like they did last night I'll be as old as Keon when the next cup arrives in TO.
Happy Birthday Mats but the Comeback Kids have gone and went. It might seem like yesterday but the last time we had a SNIFF at the finals was over a decade ago!
We're Number 18.....WE'RE NUMBER 18! has such a great ring to it try it a few times. C'mon say it with me now!! We're Number 18!! We're Number 18 The bad news is that our best player is @#%@ing 36 years old and we didn't even draft him.
Unless this team gets blown up GOOD this is where we will be for another decade. So get used to saying it. 40 years and counting boys but all they are doing down at MLSE is counting profits. We're Number 18.....WE'RE NUMBER 18!

| Leafs Posted: 2/15/2007 8:37:35 PM | Yes happy beleted birthday to Mats and unfortuntely he and the Leafs didnt get two points vs the Islanders on Tuesday.
Well the latest standings show we are number 8 with the 4-2 win in Philly tonight! It sure will be a dogfight for playoff spots in the east as there is no certaintly of whos in and whos out. The Leafs have been excellent on the road but there hasnt been much to cheer about while watching a game at the ACC. Leafs need to start winning at home or else they may kiss their playoff chances goodbye!
The bigger hockey news of the day was the highly anticipated trade of Forsberg! The Nashville Predators certainly look a lot better as they move one step closer to possibly winning the stanley cup this year. Thats if Forsberg stays healthy.
The Predators power play hasnt been that good so with the addition of Forsberg will certainly improve their ranking. Legwand, Kariya and now Forsberg..wow!
All Canadian matchup for the Leafs on HNIC Saturday as they entertain the Oilers who are in a similar predicament in the West so I anticipate a good game then.
Bowen was funny tonight with the no stoppage in play "Harry has headed for the airport!" If it was Pierre Macguire doing the color I bet Joe would punch him in the face for not shutting up Well Pieere annoys me too lol

| Leafs Posted: 2/16/2007 10:54:08 AM | Tomorrow they'll be celebrating 40 yrs of losing...woohoo...most of us weren't around for the last cup!!!...wonder what they'll do for the 50th anniversary....
BTW...I am still a die hard and not jumping off the bandwagon but I am thinking I will be old and grey by the time I get to see the Leafs hoisting the Cup in late spring
|
| Leafs Posted: 2/17/2007 11:23:40 AM | Should be quite the celebration tonight to honor the last Leafs team to win the cup back in '67 almost 10 years before i was born Well I hope to witness just one Stanley cup win in my lifetime. With the way its going so far that might not happen until im Jonny Bower's age lol. Very nice write up in the Star today about that team and whos still alive today.
I would love to hop in a time machine and kidnap that team and see how they would do to help todays Leafs. I think some of them would probably do well in todays NHL with the skills they had then. I would keep some of todays leafs in the line up like Sundin and put in the '67 team there. Just curious to see what would happen I am sure we would start to kick some serious ass lol.
Thanks to Leafs TV I am able to see what kind of team we had then and one of these days we will be partying like in '67
Eventually they will get to the game and for both the Leafs and Oilers it will be huge as both are trying to get into the playoffs.
Enjoy the pregame ceremony and the game.

| Leafs Posted: 2/20/2007 2:31:07 PM | good point Brashanic as the game sure has changed in the last 40 years. Can't imagine what it wil lbe like 40 yers from now! 100 plus teams in the leage at that time maybe lol
As for the tribute to the '67 team the other night it was a very nice idea by Ferguson and the Leafs to put this together. The media sure made a big deal about Dave Keon returning and that he would forgive the Leafs organization for the trouble hes been through. Its very nice he was there and Im sure appreciated the fans support but hes still bitter and may never resolve the problems hes been facing.
Sundin had a great game against the Oilers and it sure was sweet for them to win on that special night.
Tonight the Leafs face the Bruins who have had their way with the Leafs this season. This is the last game against the Bruins for the season so heres hoping for a Leafs victory!
Leafs are holding on to that final playoff spot and we will see what the Leafs do if anything by the trade deadline. Here is the latest top 8 in the East.
1) Buffalo- 83 points 2) New Jersey-78 points 3) Tampa Bay-69 points 4) Pittsburgh-73 points 5) Ottawa-71 points 6) Atlanta-69 points 7) Carolina-67 points 8) Leafs-66 points
Game is only on Leafs TV tonight.

I say the 93 leafs would do it this time around...............we were so close, sooooooooo close. Thanks Gretzky

If my memory serves me correct in game 6 with the Leafs up 3-2 in the series Gretzky high sticked Gilmour and drew blood and was not penalized nor given a misconduct and Gretzky was around to score the winner in OT to take it to game 7. Would have been great to see the Leafs make it that year because it would have been a classic Montreal/Toronto match up which will never happen again.
As for the 67 Leafs not standing a chance in todays games, well you can't really compare because if you give those guys the new equipment in todays games that would make them all the more faster and harder shots. Back then it was tougher to get into the league as well so more elite players were playing.

Back then it was tougher to get into the league as well so more elite players were playing Sorry chuck i have to disagree with you here ,the fact of the matter is that todays players are much bigger ,stronger ,faster and smarter than they were back in the 60s ,the goaltenders play a much differant style now as well ,coaching has evolved emmensly and even more today the game is based on speed which back then was no where like it is today .
with the influx of players from all over the world ,the talent and speed level has gone up alot ,in hindsight alot of the players from the 60s would not be able to keep up with todays players ,but there are exceptions of course ,just like there are alot of not so talented players in the league today that could never have made the original six and that is becuase of the number of players in the game today as compared to the number back then .
When they start to think about making the nets bigger it is because most goalies are now much bigger and much more agile and harder to score on .
But don't get me wrong i loved the old original six team days and the toughnest they had and how hard they worked because they were not spoiled rotten back then they really had to earn there keep and that keep was not much in those days .It is just a matter of fact that the players are differant nowadays and that is just the facts .
|
| Leafs Posted: 2/24/2007 1:49:18 PM | I agree the players are bigger and faster today. I remember the early 1970's the heaviest player listed in the league was Phil Esposito at 220 lbs. In 1967 one player stood above the rest in skating ability, able to skate through a whole team, over and over again, Bobby Orr. The hardest shot by a country mile was Bobby Hull. A goalie that sorta played the butterfly was Tony Esposito.
I still think the '67 Leafs would beat the '07 Leafs. Even 40 years older!!
I really blew it with the "inside" scoop on a Kaberle trade early on in the season. I feel like a dolt because I really believed my friend. He says now that they stopped looking because of injuries on defense early on, but I don't think I believe him anymore. He told me Quinn was gone long before Quinn was gone, but like most guys/gals here, that was pretty predictable.
I really like Kaberle but I'd be okay if they traded him for a top line winger for Sundin in the playoffs (if they make it). It makes sense to me seeing all the young defense prospects the Leafs have. Any trade for Kaberle would have to be for a winger under contract for a few seasons, no rentals.
Why do goalies fight each other? That really looked dumb the other night Miller challenging Emery. When Emery took his mask off you could see he was rather amused. Then he cleaned Miller's clock (like the time Potvin cleaned Hextall's clock). They are almost 200 feet apart all game and don't really build up an animosity. It seems like the goalie who skates down and challenges the other goalie loses anyway.

| Leafs Posted: 2/24/2007 2:00:53 PM | This is for Patchs_bro.
Forty years from now the Stanley Cup will be won in 5 games by the Kiev Wheatkings over the Shanghai Silver Blades. Top scorer in 2047 will be a six year veteran by name of Iko Matsyamoto, playing for the Sydney Seahawks. Berlin, Montreal, Tehran and Rio de Janiero will be relegated to the second division with Phoenix, London, Winnipeg and Athens moving up to the first division.
Wang Ki-Li will finally retire after a 3,300 point career, 5th all time.
|
| Leafs Posted: 2/26/2007 4:46:33 PM | well i certainly hope that is not what happens to the NHL but considering how more diverse the league is now compared to 40 years ago perhaps something like this could happen! Sure would be quite the road trip for leafs unless they have it so you play teams outside north america once or twice a year and then oh yeah the playoffs too. Canada invented hockey and just 6 NHL teams now! If we had a real hockey guy and Canadian to be commissioner instead of Bettman I think the league would have more Canadian representation.
I remember the '93 season well and you could hear a pin drop in the Gardens once Gretzky scored. Would of been an awesome rematch of '67 if the Leafs made it to the finals against the Habs. Im not sure if they would of won as the Habs had a great team that year.
Tonight the Leafs face the Habs in Montreal and looks to be a good game. The leafs with a win can move up to 7th spot.
We can all put the rumors of Tucker going out to the Oilers or Flames as he he been re-signed by the Leafs. Not sure yet the details of the deal but Tim your dream of getting rid of Tucker wont happen now! I am glad they decided to keep him as once hes healthy to return to the line up he will certainly be the boost they need for their playoff drive.
Going to be an exciting day in hockey tomorrow with the trade deadline so Im gonna be all over that! Hopefully Ferguson does make a move to get that sniper they will need to make the playoffs. It would be a shame if they do stand pat.
Game is tied at one in the first period here.

| Leafs Posted: 2/26/2007 7:11:09 PM | Ahh dang, high stick to Sundin and no call. Funny how Pony, got called for goalie interference yet when Sundin spits out blood there is no call. Once again it happened to Da'Buds Nice game, came back to make it a game. Maurice changing the lines was sweet and he pulled Raycroft. Good game for him | |
|
| Leafs Posted: 2/26/2007 8:19:01 PM | | These last couple of games, it just seems like the Leafs can't catch a break. | |
|
| Leafs Posted: 2/27/2007 1:57:27 PM | sure was a tough loss last night as the Leafs did try to make a comeback against a shaky Abascher (sp) but came up short against the Habs :(
I dunno why there was no call on the high stick to Sundin! Guess the refs were Habs biased last night. There should of been a call and its hard to argue reasons why the refs made the right move to not call it.
A busy trade deadline day. Guerin to Sharks, Bertuzzi to the Red Wings, a surprise move by the Oilers to send Ryan Smyth to the Islanders.
As for the Leafs I was worried they would stand pat and well for the third time Yanic Perrault is a leaf again lol. Going to Phoenix is Brendan Bell.
With Peca out for the season the Leafs needed a face off guy and Perrault should defintely help in that area. A sniper to help Sundin would have been nice but Ferguson failed to get one. Perhaps his job is on the line if the Leafs fail to make the playoffs again.
Not many games left now and the Leafs will probably have to win almost every game if they want to get in the playoffs.
Sabres tonight then Jersey then another game against the Sabres. So a pretty tough schedule ahead!
game can be seen tonight on TSN @ 7:30

| Leafs Posted: 2/27/2007 2:07:54 PM | I, for one, was very happy that the Leafs resigned Tucker. Multi-year deal, even!
I'm also glad to see Perrault back. I like him a lot.
I didn't expect a lot of big moves for the Leafs today. It's obvious they need something. I just don't think they know what it is they need.
Tough game tonight against Buffalo. Lets hope they get a few breaks.

| Leafs Posted: 2/27/2007 7:15:32 PM | GOD !!! what a game. I can't say anything about it other than the fact that really lost 2 points and this game should of been a change and a charge for a play-off spot. | |
|
| Leafs Posted: 2/27/2007 10:03:23 PM | Well Jane they didn't get what they needed....AGAIN. They need to rebuild this team because the way it is it isn't going anywhere. The "Core" of guys is either getting older or has proven they just can't be winners. In the Eastern Conference they can't compete with Buffalo, Ottawa and the Devils. After that group there is a pack that the Buds bring up the tail end. Now with the Islanders picking up Ryan Smith & Zednik plus with Yashin coming back they look like a lock to pick up the last playoff spot.
If Tucker loves T-dot so much they should have done a trade then signed him in the summer. That would have meant the Leafs would get something for him as a rental and would be stronger down the road. He wont make any difference from now to the end of the season anyway. He will take at least a few games to get back in shape and by then it likely will be too late with only 19 games left to make a run. Even if they get in a quick first round exit is all it will mean.
At least the Raptors look good, the ACC wont be completely dark this playoff season.
|
| Leafs Posted: 2/28/2007 5:05:59 AM | | I'm not a leaf fan,but In my opinion the leafs just got older and slower..Bell is a promising young d-man.I would have dumped White before Bell.Feruson is the second coming of Mike Milbury..he should have made a pitch for Biron...Leafs have been playing good enough to win in a lot of games they are losing..Raycroft is terrible he'll have a hot game or three then he'll suck for two weeks..not going anywhere with him.Frankly I could care less. I think the team is terribly mis-managed,and as long as Bay St. keeps buying up the tickets why would they care.Mind you Perrault won't hurt them, but I don't see him making a big impact. | |
|
| Leafs Posted: 2/28/2007 8:10:41 AM | I dont normally follow hockey but I must say that the leafs are playing well ..........
LEss than stellar this year . What the heck happened to them ? When I was a little girl many moons ago they were all Gods.. now they kinda resemble Mr Rogers in both movement and talent ...
|
| Leafs Posted: 2/28/2007 5:01:13 PM | that game last night sure was disappointing and the Buffalo goal after Ponys goal pretty much ended the game right there. McCabe is probably having the worst season of his career and perhaps they should cut him loose when given the opprtunity. With 88 giveaways or something like that it sure doesnt help matters much.
The Leafs play much better on the road and so Im with what Bill Watters said today in that there is chance for resilience against the Devils on Friday in Jersey. We wont see a lot of scoring in that game probably knowing how Jersey plays but should be a close game whoever ends up winning it and hoefully they come up big then and to get sweet revenge against Buffalo on Saturday which they need badly to show they home fans they still want to make the post season.
Toronto is a tough city to be a professional althlete especially when it comes to hockey and there is a lot of pressure placed on the goalie to come up big in games so maybe Raycroft cant handle the expectations of him when playing at the ACC. Maurice still has confidence in him and will continue to put him in between the pipes.
We could of got Roberts back or acquired Smyth from Edmonton but Ferguson didnt want to risk giving up prospects and draft pics as thats what we need if the Leafs want to get better in the future. Unfortunately Ferguson may be cut loose for these decisions. I think it was a wise move to not make any major moves at this point.
Sure is great that the Raptors are doing well and will make the playoffs. We are due for a basketball championship here anyways :) Might be hard for the Raps to do it this year lol.
Also excited about the upcoming Blue Jays season too.
I am still on the bandwagon win or loose! Go leafs go
