| Why dont guys want to talk on the phone?
Posted: 9/8/2008 12:11:35 AM | I *hate* talking on phones. Phones are for talking business and a conversation shouldn't last for more then five minutes. Phones are not for getting to know someone better.
I also don't like instant messengers or email: It's too much effort to type and get rapport going and the wait-for-response delay makes it worse.
The best is just in-person conversation. It takes no effort to talk, it's easy and enjoyable, and it's got the personal touch to it that a phone doesn't have. I can't hug you through the phone. You can't see my smile. | |

maybe you should quit looking online then, since everything that you hate, many consider to be vital tools to getting to know someone before meeting in person!

You're obviously not familiar with virtual conferencing. Virtual conferencing allows you to see and talk to someone "in real time", yet leaves the options open for typing AND send/receive pics!
Since I'm always travelling, I'm always doing virtual conferencing with family and friends. It's, honestly, the next best thing to being with someone in person! The only thing closer, would be holographic conferencing. Yet THAT technology isn't here as of now.
If in-person is simply the best for you? Then mebbe you should stick with that method of meeting people. Leave the web to those whom are more diversified and less limited. | |

I can't stand the phone because I am on it all the time for work. Once I get off of work I want to bury that phone. As the OP is tired with emails and Im's, I am tired of the phone.
I say, meet in person and get it over with. Too many people spend weeks and months talking on the phone or talking on email/im. To me the best way to get to know someone is face to face.
It avoids the common idealization people do and it avoids endless games of 20 questions that get pinned as a conversation. | |

For the most part, if we can enjoy looking at you while you ramble on, we can wait until you get to the point of whatever it is that you are trying to say. On the phone, all we can do is stare off into space, or at another pretty woman, which distracts us from what you are saying, then you get pissed because we aren't paying attention to all the verbage you are spewing out while saying nothing in particular. If you ever notice, a woman's text messages, emails and letters usually get 'to the point' a lot quicker than her conversational style does. THAT'S why we prefer to communicate with you in print/text rather than on the phone or on a chat line; too much detritus there. | |

Posted: 9/8/2008 8:02:51 AM | Personally, I loathe the phone. I see it simply as a means to get something done (fix a problem, set up a meeting, deal with a financial issue, etc.) and not a means to get to know someone better or reinforce a connection between two people.
But this also speaks to the differences in how men and women communicate. So, the orginal poster asked the question "Why dont guys want to talk on the phone?". Well, we're men. We communicate differently than women. | |

Girls always think I don't like them anymore just because I don't want to spend 2 hours on the phone telling them how much I like them. Sheesh. | |

This point is very well taken and I can agree. Many people equate opposite communication styles as being a breakdown in communication. When in fact, it's simply just differing ways that we communicate between the sexes.
Though I can and have carried on phone conversations for many hours with the right women, my profile tend to say that i'm not interested in an "interview" style first date!
This would also make sense out of why I don't like "coffee" dates! Interesting! | |
