For goodness sake, why kill them? You are sure to go to Buddist hell!
I think the reason that there are so many this year is because of the lack of wasps. Wasps feed on the larvae.

My son catches them and feeds them to his venus flytrap.

I can't stand spiders but don't agree with killing them...thats like picking on someone much smaller than you, luckily we live in a country with hardly any venomous creatures so there is no need.

They are actually called Crane Flies

In appearance they seem long and gangly, with very long legs, and a long slender abdomen. The wings are often held out when at rest. Unlike mosquitoes, crane flies are weak and poor fliers, with a tendency to "wobble" in unpredictable patterns during flight, but can be caught without much effort. However, it is very easy to accidentally break off their delicate legs when catching them, even without direct contact. This may help them to evade the birds who pursue them as prey.
The females have swollen abdomen (because of eggs held inside) in comparison to the males. The female abdomen also ends in a pointed ovipositor that looks a bit like a stinger.

Crane fly (Tipula oleraceae)Despite their common names, crane flies do not prey on mosquitoes, nor do they bite humans. Adult crane flies feed on nectar or not at all; most crane fly species live only to mate and die once they become adults. Their larvae, called leatherjackets, consume roots (such as those of turf grass in backyard lawns) and other vegetation, in some cases causing damage to plants. Therefore the crane fly is occasionally considered a mild turf pest in some areas. Some leatherjackets are aquatic.

The long legs are an adaptation to allow the fly to alight in grassy places.

They are the food source of many birds.

"Wouldn't it be ironic if the virus was only released as you splattered the insect against the wall?"

They dont splatter, they crumple up, fall to the floor, twitch their wiggly legs then get up and start flying round again.

I work in a kitchen and my little blue light electrozapper is just as happy to kill the crane flies as the ordinary flies - sorry guys it's the law I have to have it!

The problem I have is that whilst the little house fly dies after a little zap and then falls to the bottom of the machine, the crane flies sticks to the bars and gets repeatedly zapped until it turns to ash - this can take 30 seconds, my kitchen is starting to sound like Dr Frankensteins tower on a dark night.

I can tolerate them until they land on me. Then they have to die. Nasty nasty things they be. Serve no purpose other than to feed spiders or whatever. If I do come back as one, I wanna be squashed ASAP please before I p1ss someone else off.

cool thread....

very topical for me too as we seem to have lots about at the moment where we live.

i personally grab them and chuck them out the window, the problem is that theire legs are so brittle that i tend to snap a few of them as i grab 'em. Oh well.....

I didn't know daddy long legs ate cats Missy. You need to find a safe hiding place for them like the microwave or tumble drier. Just remeber they're in there though.

lol trish i hate the bloody things and for years i have run like mad when they've invaded my lounge. not only are they swift little shits, but they are dam good hiders! takes me ages to find them lol
however, the last couple of days the kids have been driving me nuts and ive been in a bad mood-every one of the little creeps have been hunted out as soon as they enter and either squashed or shown the exit. im getting quite good at it! in fact i even saved the day by removing three from our local A&E sunday night lol
