i am 56 and my hair is very long. i think it depends on the woman, and what makes her feel good about herself. length is no problem if it is kept clean and a nice style. i never blow dry my hair, all i do is scrunch it~~my profile picture is an older one~~but i do use good products on it, and it looks, and is healthy. some womwn want the length~~but do nothing to keep it up. they used to say that when you get older, you should keep a short style~~that has changed along with the times~

Long short or in a ponytail. It's lovely, isn't it. Got to admit I have no real preference.

I'm almost 50
I have very thick curly hair almost down to my butt

I like it that way
I cant imagine myslf without long hair

To h*ll with the fashions or trends
Me feeling good about me is where its at

For work I plait it into one long braid to keep it under control and out the way
Socially its either down or piled on my head in a loose twist with some pretty clips
I love to swim with my hair down...just love the feeling of it flowing across my back

There is very little grey in it, a little at the temples, and that did concern me years ago before it happened, but in the styles I wear it now, it still looks attractive

Straggley grey hair just hanging around is not attractive though.

The great thing with natural long hair is you can have a different style every day:)
Or even 3 different styles in one day.

And no it doesnt take that much time. Washing yes! Putting it up takes me less than 3 minutes. Compare that to all the torture required for shorter hair styles.

I'm very lucky to still have my natural red color at 49, and I always said I would keep it long until I think it looks ridiculous or becomes too much of a bother. But that's me - and I did ask several male friends what their opinion of long hair on older women was. Turns out those that had a preference for long hair actually like "feeling" it moreso than "looking" at it.

Ladies I say if you feel good in your long hair - wear it. It's all about you and noone else in the end.

And it's for me to enjoy. If anyone else appreciates it, or finds beauty in it, that's great, but it makes me feel good, and brings enjoyment to me.

I am very lucky to have forund a hairdresser who would not cut my hair short.
I used to have it really really short, no more than an inch long. I am 53 and have layered longish hair, which is naturally wavy. Wash it every other day, but condition it every day. Brush n tepee my teeth in the shower whilst my hair is being conditioned, rinse, towel dry and go.
Some people suit long hair and others short - as long as U r happy with it go for it.

I have always had long hair (naturaly curly), very few times in my life that
I have had it cut to a short length. I like my hair the way it is usually and
most people that I am around like it. I have Cherokee Bloodline so my hair
is naturally a black color also as in my profile pic's. I have a question????
if you were me would you cut it to a shorter length because of age reasons
or leave it as is???
Some people I have talked to thinks it would be nicer in a layered cut, I have
had it that way and liked it pretty good at the time but the majority of the time
it is long. What's your view?

I am 42 and have waist length hair that isn't going ANYWHERE but even longer! My grown daughters have agreed that, even when I reach the age where I can no longer care for my own hair, they will see that it is properly cared for. I plan to die of old age, with hair down to my butt.

The myth that older women should cut their hair, just because they're older, makes no sense to me. The logic breaks down. Some say long hair ages a woman. So how come I was still being carded in my late 30's? I have long haired friends who were carded even later. Sometimes I am mistaken for my daughters' sister, instead of their mother. So much for long hair making you look older. And if looking younger is the goal, why reach a certain age and cut your hair into the obligatory poodle perm, signaling to the world, "I'm old, so I'm wearing the standard old lady hairdo."?

I had very long hair til the age of about 35. I cut it shoulder length because for some reason I thought it was a good idea.
It stayed shoulder length for many years til the gray was so prominent that it was more gray than my natural auburn.
Now at 45, my hair is mostly gray. A really ugly salt and pepper gray that is very coarse and so different from my auburn hair.
So I cut it short and I dye it. I would love to go back to long hair, but I never will. Trying to keep long hair colored is very time consuming and expensive.

If your hair is not gray, or stringy or dirty, long hair is beautiful .

But IMPO, there is nothing uglier than an older woman...or man for that matter with long gray hair. Ewww...its just ugly and silly looking.

If you have nice hair, it does not matter what color it is.......

I enjoy long hair on all those I date, and I enjoy longer hair for me was well. I do not dye mine, and I have some gray at the temples, but I prefer it that way and those around me as well.

If you need to color your hair, that is a natural thing for many to do and need, but to cut your hair short is just not as attractive as sexy flowing long hair.......

Just my opinion.......

I have had long hair all my life, and as long as I can grow it, it will stay long.

If anything I think short hair makes a person look older. The shorter the hair, the more attention is drawn to the face and to whatever wrinkles and lines the person has.

Also there is nothing wrong with wearing your hair a certain way because the man in your life likes it that way. Exactly when did it become a good thing to be selfish, as in only doing things because they make you happy?

I will keep my long hair - i love it - its waist length when wet and took me a long time to get it this way after being cut short once. :(
Don't follow the fashion and trends - if you love your hair - long or short - its your choice...go with it.

A popular shampoo just released a commercial that shows long, thick hair from the back, then shows women over 45 with fabulous hair in the front view. Seems like the old wives tale that old women must have short hair is a thing of the past.

Mae.....

I did not say that short hair is not attractive or sexy.....I said that if you cut your hair short that it is not AS attractive as long flowing hair is to ME.....smiles

OT.....Hair like many other things on a person will be determined by genetics, style, body type, and other factors.

Long hair is just very sensual when taken care of and fits the person......

Just my opinion......

I must respectfully disagree. I've seen many older Native Americans, of either sex, with long, flowing silvery hair standing out in beautiful contrast against their red skin. I think they look wonderful, as well as so dignified and commanding of utmost respect. Gray is not ugly. Healthy, happy hair never is. And NOTHING is ugly just because it's a sign of age.

Honestly, what looks silly to me is when an obviously older woman (I'm talking 70's and up, here) colors her hair jet black or fire-engine red and thinks the world won't notice she's old. Why do women feel the need to hide their age? It's nothing to be ashamed of. My beginnings of lines and gray hairs...I call them my service stripes.

I love my long hair. I'm not about to cut it because someone says I'm too old for it. I also don't want to look like everyone else with short hair.
