True dat - take a look at Emmylou Harris with her gray hair and tell me you do not find her breathtaking. http://www.emmylou.net/mgallery.html
But hair color - Wow, I keep hoping that women can let other women be whoever they want to be, even if they want purple hair at 70 (or 90). Too bad we find fault with men trying to mold us and then we do it to ourselves. Geez, who is it hurting? Maybe we are watching too many makeover shows and are all amateur stylists with no paying clients, so need to pass our fashion judgments on others. Not all art is pretty and not all people are either, but come on, don't we AT LEAST have the freedom to be our own creations and look the way we want?
Here is an interesting link that may make you think

What about the Would-be Goods funny song "Too Old for rock'n'roll/ Too old for long straight hair/ Too old to walk around in sexy underwear." At least I find it humorous, because the real "too old" cop is in your own head. Who cares?

Why do so many people say long hair is harder to take care of than short hair? When my hair was short (for most of my life), I slept in rollers (when I was single of course lol) or used a curling iron or hot rollers, in order to get it to fall the way I wanted it to - then loaded it with hair spray or mouse or gel to get it to stay that way. YUCK!

Now it's truly wash and go hair, most of the time. Sure, the hair products cost more, and I have to purchase 2 boxes of colour if I do a major change, and make sure I condition it every time I shampoo. It also takes longer to rinse the shampoo and conditioner out of my hair, but we're talking moments, not hours. I usually blow-dry my bangs and give it a quick blow-dry while combing out the tangles while it's wet (believe it or not, it makes it a LOT easier to get the tangles out while blow-drying).

I've gone both routes of NEVER using a blow dryer on my hair, or using a blow dryer to get out the bulk of the moister, then letting the rest dry naturally, and it hasn't made a bit of difference to the texture. Maybe I'm just lucky, but it's still very healthy looking and silky feeling. And THAT'S why I keep my hair long. I love the feel of it more than the looks of it.

The guys at work threaten me if I even mention that I'm thinking of cutting my hair, and many customers comment on the beauty of it. It happens often enough, that it really gives my spirits a boost. So overall, it's good. I like it long, guys like it long, and strangers even like it long. Who am I to argue?

I get that too. One person panicked because I had it back in a pony tail, and she thought I'd cut it! I had to show her it was still there. Sheesh, I wouldn't cut my hair any more than I'd cut off any other part of me.

I have happily grown my hair down to my ass. I started it in my early 20's. I will soon be 50, my hair looks better then ever. I stopped hi-lighting it about 4 years ago because it was time and it's in a much better condition now. Besides those natural hi-lights are happening.

I've had some old biddies mention that I need to cut my hair, but really I look at the source and laugh it off. It is very easy to take care of. If it's too hot I pin it up, if I am cold I let it down. It makes me feel very sexy and alive not to mention men love to grab handfuls of it while making love. You could not pay me enough to cut it.

Rockin over 49!!

It's great having long hair...it's easy to care for...therefore practical...low maintenance :-)

I am 46 and don't plan on losing my locks (waist length) for a long time...

To each his own....

I am not about what other people think...I am what I am and loving it....

I have had long hair most of my life, from down to my knees to shoulder length with the exception of once where I cut it short. I much prefer long hair on myself. I think its all in personal preferences and how it makes you feel. I have very naturally curly hair so I have the option of leaving it curly or going straight, putting it up or leaving it down. I like having all those options. To say at a certain age we should or must cut it short , in my opinion is a crock.

It all depends what suits your face and not what age you are.

My own preference is to see longhair on every woman, regardless of age. Dont talk to me about maintenence an upkeep for longhair. M ine is down to the middle of my back.

Why shouldn't older women have long hair? My hair has been long for most of my life and will remain long.

Older women were targets of sexual sexism. Long hair was/is intimately wrapped up in a woman's sexuality. It is why in the past, unmarried women were allowed to wear their hair down but married women wore it up--to be let down only for their husbands. For centuries, women wore wimples or veils to cover their hair lest they incite men to uncontrollable lust (really, read the history books). Christian women were exhorted to cover their hair not only in homage to god, but "because of the angels." That last verse has never been satisfactorily explained.

Because postmenopausal women were no longer able to bear children, they were no longer supposed to engage in sex (remember, for centuries, according to the accepted theology of the time, sex was for procreation), so society dictated that they no longer needed to "look" sexy. Hence, they wore it in buns or, in modern times, cut and permed their hair. Men continue to be able to produce sperm into old age, so no such prohibitions pertained to them.

Now we openly have sex for pleasure and all sorts of other social taboos have been broken. When I turned 40, my older sister told me to cut my hair. Bullshit . . . it is still long. I have never been one to blindly obey social conventions, why should I have started then or buckle under now?

My hair is my best feature. I would be sorely remissed if I cut it.

I agree with an earlier comment, do what looks best on you not depending on age. I do believe a layered look would be nice on you.

But IMPO, there is nothing uglier than an older woman...or man for that matter with long gray hair. Ewww...its just ugly and silly looking.

LOL! Good thing it IS just your PO -- I'd sure hate to give up the compliments I get on mine. . . .

Had mine short most of my adult life but when I divorced about 5 years ago I decided to grow it long. Five years down the track I'm feeling a bit like Barry Gibb looks. Sometimes I just feel that long hair ages and anyway, going for a shorter cut today. We'll see.

Sh ellsbells,
I know exactly what you are saying! Except for the Barry Gibb part ( I still think he's cute though). I have had mine short for many years and decided I wanted to see what I would look like with it long again. I doubt that I will let it grow much past the middle of my back, I have fine hair and do have to do more than let it dry to look good. But I like it both short and long and I'm glad I did it for me and for no other reason, no issues that way. How a person wears their hair is like accessories; some look good some don't.
It's a personal choice.

I haven't had my hair cut for four months now and it's now past my shoulders at the back. The last time I was at the hairdressers, I told her I was going to let my hair grow. She told me that if I wanted to do that, I should find a new hairdresser. I have an appt. tomorrow with same hairdresser. She doesn't know it yet but I'm NOT having a cut! I just want my bangs trimmed. If she wants to cut it, I'll be walking out!!! There are lots of fish...errr ...I mean hairdressers in the sea!
By the way, I'm loving my long hair and I've noone to please but myself....I need a new picture though.

IMHO, there is nothing that ages a woman faster than short hair. This has always been one of my pet-peeves. And why is it that it's always women that are urging their "friends" to cut their hair short????? Personnaly, I think they are just trying to reduce the competition.

I'm 51 and about 80% gray. I grew in the gray, after some vascillating, and could not be happier with it. I'm a happy Silver Tabby, with awesome and truly original streaks. The downside is that as my hair changed colour, it also changed texture and is now wavy and bushy when it used to be silky and slippery. So I've decided to go short for the time being. Since I have delicate facial features, too much hair is overpowering, but a Halle Berry-esque pixie cut shows off my streaks to their best advantage and frames my face.

Everyone's gotta do what's best for them, and what's best for me is NOT a poodle perm and ginger-ale-coloured hair!

When I turned 40, I made an appointment to get my long hair cut off.
When I asked a the male co-worker who sat behind me what sort of 'bob' I would look best in, he said 'Your cutting your hair? What for?'.
I said I was cutting my hair because I was now 40....duh....
His reply was 'why would you do that when it looks so nice?'.

Why oh why indeed? Made me think of my own stereotypes and what I perceived as appropriate behaviour for my 'age'. Yep, old school again.

Bottom line is.....if it still looks good and it makes YOU feel good.....leave it! If not, cut till your hearts content and help keep the hairdressers in business! After all, long hair women who don't dye or perm their hair do not make them money.

I'm 48 and my hair is my best feature....it's down to my hips and it's still soft, thick, shiney, dark and with only a few sprigs of "platinum blonde." I was thinking of getting it cut but I'm just lazy. Long hair though a killer for the drain pipes and the vacuum and tough to sleep with (sometimes I wake up and it's almost choking me - I toss and turn) is really easy to maintain not to mention cheap. Eventually I'll cut it when there's too much platinum coming through.

Length is matter of preference....never be slave to fashion!

This thread brings to light a real issue.....

I love my hair!

Interestingly enough, my girl friends who have issues with their hair make negative comments about my hair.

I've known one friend since teenage years. She had always had extremely short hair; now, she is a cancer survivor and has very little hair. She said "You should get rid of all that hair. Nobody your age needs all of that hair".

The other friend has, also, always had short hair. She often states that I have too much hair. She told someone that she lifted my hair and when she released it....my head snapped back.

I've told them and everybody else who complains about my hair "that I love my hair and that I hope that they love theirs".

Long hair, short hair, purple, green, blue, what does it matter....and why should it be age related?

I enjoy having my hair long. It is a part of my personality, as is the color I change it to. We try so hard to go with the flow of society that we lose ourselves in the process. Luckily at my age "50" I've finally come to the realization that I can be who I want, wear my hair in the style I want, and not worry about what someone else says or thinks. If you enjoy your hair short, go for it! If you feel good with it long, do it. It is not a decision that is going to harm anyone or anything. As the saying goes, "Life is short, enjoy it while you can because you only get one chance."

I have to say I disagree with you bean. I am 46 and have had short hair since the early 80's. I dont believe it has aged me at all. I can do many different styles with my hair which I like and I dont miss my long hair at all. Besides, I get to pamper myself often by getting it cut, styled and colored.

First of all forget about what men like on women. It's YOUR hair, you do what you want with it. If you see a shorter hairstyle you admire, ask where and who cut it. Then go there with your information and get an opinion on how that cut would look on you and any other opinions they may have, especially if you're serious about wanting a change.

I've always had short hair with the exception of about a year in junior high when it was well past my shoulders. Seems as soon as I begin to date a man the first words out of his mouth is that I should try growing my hair out. If I wanted it long I'd have it long. Would he change the length of his hair for me? I wouldn't ask him too since it's not what attracted me to him. I don't like long hair on men so why date someone who does then ask him to cut it?

I had a great aunt that had long white-blonde hair and once a week she'd have it done, always piled on top and done beautifully and she maintained it during the week. After her husband died she remarried some years after and her new husband ****ed how she spent too much money each week having it styled...so she had it cut short, it just wasn't her. After awhile she got tired of the old "skin-flint" and his selfish ways, went back to her former style that everyone loved and divorced him.
