| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/26/2007 2:12:07 PM | I have long hair and I'm 54 soon to be 55..OMG!! Anyway, I've always had long hair...the shape of my head looks totally awful with short hair. I'm NOT trying to be young, buy growing my hair, as someone said....I just prefer it that way...I get lots of compliments on it...so why not? I don't blow dry it, nor curl it, it's just natural with nature's frosting around the temples. I try to keep it neat...but riding horses all the time, it does get a little messy...but shoot, all I need is a brush!
I think long hair on any age is nice...short hair, too! Just some look better w/ short and some look better w/ long.

Again whatever works for and feels right to you is what you should do ... but I'll take long hair any day, all day over shorter hair.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/28/2007 7:14:43 AM | I totally agree with twenty-five...you hit the nail on the head. It is really funny why older women with long frizzy hair thinks that is attractive?? Shorter healthy hair will take years off you looks!!! Oh, please. Stop perpetuating the myth that older women are NOT ALLOWED to have long hair. Just because *you* have short hair doesn't mean we all have to cut ours. Long hair doesn't have to frizz, dry out, split, or break off. If it does, it's not being cared for properly. I challenge you to look at me and say truthfully that my hair isn't healthy, or that it makes me look older. If it does, why am I frequently mistaken for my daughters' sister, considering they're 23 and 21?
IMHO, there is nothing that ages a woman faster than short hair. This has always been one of my pet-peeves. And why is it that it's always women that are urging their "friends" to cut their hair short????? Personnaly, I think they are just trying to reduce the competition. Bean, YOU'RE the one who hit the nail on the head. I noticed the same pattern you pointed out. The votes for short hair are ALL coming from women. MEN LIKE LONG HAIR! And hairdressers, of course, feed women this long-hair-ages-you crap so they can get the gullible ones sitting in their chair for a trim, perm, and dye every six weeks. Money in their pockets.
I have to say I disagree with you bean. I am 46 and have had short hair since the early 80's. I dont believe it has aged me at all. I can do many different styles with my hair which I like and I dont miss my long hair at all. Besides, I get to pamper myself often by getting it cut, styled and colored. I wouldn't consider that pampering. I'd consider it torture. I get to pamper myself often with deep conditioning, herbal rinses, and essential oils-- and the number of hair styles I can try out is darn near infinite.
Sorry, people, no one is ever going to convince me to cut my hair.

| Beancounter414... Posted: 3/28/2007 7:55:09 AM | I couldn't e-mail you because of your 75-mile restriction. And I couldn't add this to my previous post, because the 15 minutes had expired. That's why two posts in a row.
I just wanted you to know I tried to contact you and thank you for what you said. There is a site I go to that is specifically geared to long hair, and I wanted to quote you there, but not without your permission. I think many of the regulars on that site are going to love the part about women trying to cut down on their competition by telling their friends to cut their hair. Do I have the go-ahead?

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/28/2007 3:36:11 PM | you have beautiful long hair Crutazean. A woman can have nice hair and be long and nice hair and its short. You can have long hair and it can be a state, and short hair and its a state, as long as it looks good and you are happy with it, that is the main thing. I don,t think men really care what length it is as long as you look good, anyway you should just be yourself and do your own thing. I like people who are themselves, and dont, just have a look to please the opposite sex, that shows confidance. Its only hair after all. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/28/2007 5:21:21 PM | ^^Thank you very much for your compliments. Sorry if I was ranting, but that notion that women HAVE to cut their hair because they reach a certain age just gets me every time.
Still awaiting beancounter's permission to quote him.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/28/2007 5:57:13 PM | Amen!!
I made a promise to my grandmother to keep my hair long years ago. And as long as she is alive I will keep that promise.
Long Hair vs Short Hair depends entirely on the individual.
My hair has been long for so long.......I couldn't picture it short.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/28/2007 6:45:04 PM | I have always had my hair at shoulder length or longer..never liked short hair on me....and I look really young for my age!.It is a personal decision...but I think long hair suits some people..and not others...by the way they look..not by age!...chubby faces should have longer hair...short hair makes their face look bigger!.I have alot of friends who are hairdressers..and I been given the 'tips". | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/30/2007 10:41:40 AM | ***Men and Women: Do the majority of women over 40 still look good with long(er) hair? How long or how short? At what age should/would women "give up the locks" to remain attractive and "in style"? Ladies, if you keep your hair long, is it because YOU want to or because the guys all fantasize about the long locks? ***
This is a subject that I have wondered about for almost a year I think. I would like all of your opinions please? If you can see my hair well enough on my profile pics that is. Good or bad LOL I think that I do not nor would I look "right" with short hair. I cut my hair short one time in my life. My then 7 year old son said that I looked like a man, ah!!! I have never had it cut short since lol But I do wonder now if others feel that I am too old for long hair. It would not change my opinion, nor would I cut it just because of someone else's preference. Just would like to know. I do mainly keep my hair long for ME. But yes, there is a bit of wanting to drive my (future) guy crazy with it also lol That being said, I probably would not even date a man that did not prefer long hair... (??)

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/30/2007 10:55:03 AM | | Ok, I know that I am too old for long hair. The forums tell me so. My hair is down to the middle of my back now and I like it that way. If you don't, put a ring on my finger and we can discuss it. I don't like the Donald Trump comb-over either, but that doesn't mean I will pass you by. Come on, I wash my hair daily. Doesn't that count for anything? I can't be all things to all men, but I can put my hair up in a French Twist. Oh yeah, during sex, a ponytail works wonders to get it out of the way. Any thoughts on "long toenails"? | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/30/2007 11:32:42 AM | One woman wrote that she saw long hair on older women as a desperate attempt to hold on to their youth... for some women short hair just isn't flattering at any age. My hair has always been long and it will remain that way.
I like the way long hair makes me feel; Traditionally feminine with a fiesty playful side. Besides long hair is great for all occassions - it can be tied back in a pony tail or brade for outdoor activities, dressed up for formal occassions, or worn down for that more sensual occassion.
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/30/2007 1:08:10 PM | Desperate attempt to hold on to their youth.....yeah, makes me picture Auntie Em with her long hair in a bun. Real youthful image.
These things weren't said when it used to be assumed, in general, that all women would let their hair grow. In a more religiously conservative society, people would (and some still do) apply First Corinthians 11 and teach that a woman shouldn't cut her hair at all. Then, long hair was seen as a sign of a God-fearing woman, not as one who's still "desperately" trying to be young and sexy when she's not "allowed" to be so anymore.
A few generations ago, short hair used to be the trademark of a shameless hussy. Now, it seems, long hair is. There's a similar shift with makeup. It used to be that a "painted woman" was thought to be immoral. Now, listening to many people, she's not even considered properly groomed and fit to appear in public without makeup on. Miss Manners remarks (paraphrased): When did society go from "A lady MAY paint" to "A lady MUST paint?" Similarly, I ask, When did society go from "A lady MAY cut" to "A lady MUST cut?"
Isn't it strange how society's views change over time?
For the curious: yes, I do have a religious conviction associated with the length of my hair. But that's between me and God only, and does not reflect what I believe any other woman should do. I do not believe, as some Pentecostal denominations teach, that the woman in the next pew is less "holy" than I am because she cuts her hair and wears slacks instead of skirts. And I do, unlike those more conservative Pentecostals, wear makeup and jewelry.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/30/2007 1:31:34 PM | Interesting, and timely, discussion thread for me. I just recently cut my hair very short, from having it quite long.
Now, I'm the type of person that has gone between long and short hair throughout most of my life, and only really had it as long as it was, to please a man (ok, smack me now because I admitted that).
So, inlight of the new season - spring, and the promotion I just got, I decided it was time to shed my locks and my past and 'spring' forward. I came home after getting my hair cut, looked in my mirror and thought to myself... ohhhh my gawd, I look old!! lol Funny, when I read some of the posts in this thread since some seem to think the complete opposite (a few thought long hair aged women). The next day of course, people at work were stunned, and I had actually forgot by the end of the day, that I looked quite different and wondered why people were staring at me. Most people told me that I looked alot younger, so then I wondered if I did look older with my long hair. I often got compliments on my long hair too though, so my take on this is that like most everything else in life, we all have different views of the world and ourselves.
I love my new hair and style. But I wouldn't at all be surprised if five years from now, I have long hair again.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/31/2007 7:47:41 AM | | Personally, my hair is down to my butt and I love it. I am 43 and it has never crossed my mind to cut it. Besides, being a military person I have to wear my hair up every day for work. Takes 5 mins vice the 30 mins blow drying and styling just to put a hat on top of it when it is short. I constantly have mostly women commenting on how beautiful my hair is. Some have even grabbed me by the hair in the stores and asked me if it is real. And yes, men are attracted to women with long hair for some odd reason. I have been told they think it is more exotic. But what do I know, I am only a mere woman....lol. Who knows what goes on in their heads? | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/31/2007 8:40:50 AM | Well. I guess if anything you all have made me feel a bit more confident in my choice to leave it long (probably until I die lol)... My Mom & Granny are always after me to cut it or "Get it out of my face!" lol I normally just pull it back, give a grin and not say a word. It is always a reflief to find there are people out there in similar situations too. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/31/2007 1:24:36 PM | | Ooh I love this question because everytime I see a woman with long hair I immediately check out the face to see how old it is! Nothing bugs me more(personally speaking of course) than to see someone who grows their hair out for all the wrong reasons. Let's face it, very rarely are there older gals out there who actually suit that style.Long hair really drags down the face and ifs it already looking "aged" long hair does nothing for that look.Natch it depends on the face but often it does not look good. Nothing worse than seeing a long long head of hair where only maybe 1/3 of it looks healthy & nice and the rest looks dry and like a rat's nest full of split ends but still they dont want to cut it!! Whats up with that anyway? Ladies dont great out your hair just to regain your youth..it usually works against you big time! | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/31/2007 3:56:45 PM | | I think women who let the gray come in naturally and have long hair look sexy. A womam who has her hair dyed to look 30 something from a distance or behind and then you see the face that doesn't match makes me do a double take. | |

Nothing worse than seeing a long long head of hair where only maybe 1/3 of it looks healthy & nice and the rest looks dry and like a rat's nest full of split ends but still they dont want to cut it!! Whats up with that anyway? See my previous diatribes; I'm not going to keep repeating myself.
But what does bear emphasis here is the health factor. If only maybe 1/3 of it looks healthy and nice, but the rest looks as you describe, it is being poorly maintained. It is not the length of the hair that is unflattering in that situation. It is the poor condition of it. LONG HAIR DOES NOT HAVE TO LOOK LIKE THAT!!!
And who says long hair is always about looks? I do need to point out that there are women who grow their hair for religious reasons. Some denominations even frown on trimming the split ends; the women in those churches have never even met a pair of scissors. I don't personally agree with taking it to that extreme, but their convictions should be respected.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/31/2007 8:03:54 PM | I keep my hair short for many reasons. First of all, I think I look better with short hair. Second, my hair is very fine, and when it's long, I can brush it and an hour later it looks stringy. It also tangles very easily, and yes, I used conditioner. Third, Where I work is extremely hot. Year round hot. and it is much easier to have short hair. When it was long all I could do with it was pull it back in a pony tail.
I also saw someone post in here, that a women should keep her hair dyed. Well, I have NEVER dyed my hair and I will never dye it. It is now medium brown with a few grays going through it. I saw what dying did to my grandmothers and mothers hair. No thanks. I like it natural.
I think this issue is totally up to the person wearing the hair and their type of hair and lifestyle.
Have a great day | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 3/31/2007 8:19:00 PM | | I think women should wear what looks most attractive on them. Not all older women or younger for that matter, look good in long hair. But I will say that I look good in long hair and it makes me look younger and it drives men crazy. So you are right to like long hair... | |
