Sometimes older women can look too young with short hair...I look like a 12 yr old girl with short hair!...lol.....Not sexy at all!....Ive had more compliments and looks by men on my hair when its long than when its short..I dont think Id have it short again for a long while...Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt are beautiful older women with long, thick hair

I've tried short hair twice in my life and found that with my type of hair, short is a lot of work. I keep it long, clean, natural (no dies and no gunk), and I'm happy with it. The only person to ever tell me it should be short now that I'm,...ahem....older, is my momma.

Alot of us girls with curls always wanted straight hair. It is absolutely true in my book that we always want what we don't have. Used to do everything when I was younger to try to get it straight. But this curly girl has learned to accept her hair and let it be. It's actually become my trademark. Viva la Curls! (only cause I'm stuck with it.)

I have had long and short hair all my life, having it cut off when I was a kid was a type of punishment. So have followed that routine up until I went to a hairdresser who was Continental and very expensive to have colour and style, at the end of it he was showing the different ways I can wear my hair and when he pulled it back behind my ears he said " Oh no, your lines are too harsh". So let hair grow basically to hide behind, then had it cut short when in an unhappy time of life, hated it and so back to growing it.
I now have blonde (dyed of course) hair halfway down my back and there is no way I will go short again. I have a weak natural curl so when I put my hair up damp I have curls on my crown which gives a 'classy look' for special occasions with very little bother.
I grow it, style it etc., for me, if it is liked by others then that is a bonus if not, their problem.
Age is a state of mind I am actually younger in my outlook on life now than when I was 'young'. Hair length had very little to do with it

Twelve months ago, due to a neck injury, my physio and thoracic surgeon suggested I have my mid thigh length hair cut to avoid surgery to my spine. (Well, that was the first step LOL). I battled with that decision for a long time - my hair was thick and heavy and very very long and I had grown it for such a long time - it was hard parting with it! But honestly, I had got to the point (I am in my mid forties) where it was just too much hard work. The climate here in Melbourne Australia is such that 99% of the time it was in a big plait and people would sit on it, it would get stuck in car doors, etc. I remember one time I had it beaded and braided and I busted my glasses and nearly knocked my g/f out when I swung my head LMAO!
So, I went to the hairdresser and I said cut it all off. I made them braid it tightly and cut it off at the nape of the neck. Then I donated it to the Anti Cancer Council of Australia (to a wigmaker they had recommended) and it was made into wigs for young girls who had lost their hair through chemotherapy treatment.
My loss was someone elses gain and that made me feel so much better.
I then had a VERY short cut done - figured I may as well go from one extreme to the other LOL.
Guess what? No migraines now for three months. No paralysis down my right side. No sudden unexptected agonising pain in my arm or leg! YAY! And although I do miss it in some ways, it will always grow back...
I really do love doing strange and crazy hairstyles, colours and things - before I couldnt it was just way to expensive!

Kudo's Lady
One of the only two times I cut my hair, I did donate it. Like you I felt I missed a part of me. Men's choice aside(no offence guys), it did help to know that my hair went somewhere good and that it does grow back!
My baby girl, lol, she'd kill me if she knew I just said that, has hair past her bottom, anyway as much as she complains about the upkeep, she like me loves the length. Hope she keeps it to a rip old age...like mine

I did date a guy once who told me he could not see me anymore because he did not like long hair on women. I told him I could not see him anymore because I didn't like guys who tried to change me.

Brava, ghstlymist! I agree wholeheartedly :) I have had long hair most of my life, and just because I have reached...ahem...the age I am, does not mean I am anywhere near ready to cut it. And, thank goodness, most of the men that pay attention to me do so first because my hair is on the longer side. I never tell a man how to wear his hair, either on his head or on his face--somehow, hair seems way too personal for others to dictate what is to be done with it. So all you other ladies, grow away if you've a mind to... After all, there must be a reason it grows in the first place???! (And yes, a guy with long hair is A-okay with me, too...lol)

Peace...

I had short hair most of my childhood and as a young adult had a perm for about 15yrs because my hair was so straight, i started to let my hair grow about 6yrs ago and it is quite long and straight, i just turned 40 and have no intention of cutting my hair, I love it long it suits me and i feel feminine a friend of mine asked me if she was to old to have long hair she is 6yrs younger then me

summer dream, how do you roll it with a pencil ? I would like to try that.
I am debating....if I cut mine I will miss my braids alot, so gonna leave it long. I know I would have regrets cause short hair needs to be curled & I dont always have the time.

It's been interesting to read this thread. I have long hair (almost to my waist) and I wear it in a ponytail. My hairdresser took a leave of absence and I kept waiting for her to come back. You know how women are about hairdressers! Well, by the time she did come back, my hair was a great length for a ponytail and so I didn't want to cut it. I live at the beach and actually long hair is easier at the beach then short hair. I just pull it back into the ponytail and it doesn't blow all over the place.

I do it for me. I really like having long hair.....

Maryanna, I twist my hair together until it starts to fold back on itself (not tightly), then fold it in half and keep twisting with my finger in the fold until it's the length that I want, open the end loop and fold it down a bit, and use the pencil as a giant hairpin to hold the coil to the back of my head (in through one loop, under the main coil, and out again through the other loop). Make sure your pencil has a point. If you do any knotting crafts, you'd call the shape at the back of my head a lark's head knot.

My hair is long (I sit on it now, so it's almost time for a trim again), but very fine, so it's not too heavy. I love my hair long, even though it's warm in the summer and a bit staticky in the winter. Strictly wash and wear - no curling or straightening for me.

I do dye it occasionally with wash in, wash out dyes. Hopefully, the grey will all be dark red by the end of the weekend. The dark red doesn't show much in the black and chestnut parts, but the grey really picks it up. Maybe I should try the purple again...

Just got my hair cut and styled. The hair stylist said wow you do look younger with shorter hair. Longer hair on me makes me look older than my years. I feel like dancing a jig...

Shoulder length or even down to the ear lobes is ok, personally I like long hair on any female (the longer the better for me) old or young but when females cut their hair to the 1 or 2 inch level and look like a male from behind then that (my opinion) is not attractive to me. I have noticed alot of females cut their hair really really short and it is because they don't want to do anything with it after they take a shower or before they go out. that is fine but for me I am not attracted to it at all.

Should be totally up to the woman. They have to tend it. My thirteen year old daughter recentlly asked to have her beautiful long tresses cut. I said yes, she did, and she is still beautiful. Do miss the braiding though.

I always used to have long hair, then had it cut.. most friends and family, with the exception of my 2 daughters thought it looked better short. I have a long neck, and small features..

I had it cut originally after seeing some photo's of me, and felt I was too old to continue to wear it long, although it did suit me when it was put up. I then grew it again and had it layered s all over, more work to style, but very glamorous, that was when I could find the time to style it.. It's been short for quite a long time now. ... so here I am growing it again, it 's my personal choice, not influenced by any one, or for anyone but me... and that's how it should be

I had my hair waist length for years. Last fall I had it cut short, above my shoulders and layerd. I still get comments from people that know me on how much sexier and younger that I looked. I definetly get second looks now.

I love long hair. It's feminine, and attractive to me. Different strokes for different folks, but a woman who has short hair, might look "nice" in a "business" setting, but I don't "turn on" to short, "no nonsense" hair. In some ways, it sends a subtle message to me that she "can't be bothered".

I don't mean that a 50 year old woman should have hair half way down her back, although, I'd find that appealing. :) But, the buzz cut look doesn't work for me.
