So many women have long hair in their youth then cut it off when older often after marriage (much to husbands displeasure)
i think short hair takes far more upkeep, with long hair you can wear it up or down to suit the conditions. In your 70's and 80's if its fine or thinnish you can save a fortune in perms and hairdressing by wearing it up in a knot whatever.

Of course I love longer hair on women of any age, but especially older.

It seems you see more women 50+ years of age with long hair than you ever saw from our parents generation at the same age. I think its related to being a baby boomer & growing up in the 60s. Women of our parents generation automatically cut their hair after 30 or so & morphed into that familiar looking bubble-do similar to Mama on the Carol Burnett Show. It seemed a rite of passage into middle age, & to me it seemed to define that you WERE middle aged.

A middle aged woman with longer hair looks & seems younger to me versus the short bubble-do wearers.

...Hair length is something very personal....I prefer a shorter style and have always worn my hair to suit myself and not public opinion. Look at Haley Berry, she looks fantastic with short hair, I noticed that she has either grown it or has extentions now but in my opinion, she looks better with it cropped short. Men probably won't agree. Most of the fellas I've known over the years like the ladies with longer locks.

It used to be almost mandatory for a woman at a 'certain age' to cut her hair short, usually some time in her mid to late twenties. I don't remember ever seeing a woman older than, say, 26 or 27 with long(ish) hair when I was a kid in Germany in the '60s and '70s. Maybe in the US it was different? But now, just about all you see is women with long hair, no matter what their age. Women with their hair in ponytails or those silly loops (when did that start??), even if they're in their 40s and beyond. Even though some women look good with long hair when they're older, generally a shorter hairstyle is more flattering as a woman ages. Too bad that American men almost all clamor for long hair. It looks downright ridiculous on some women, yet they still cling to it. I *cannot* grow my hair long, because it's extremely thin and fine, so I have to keep it a short bob. I'd hate to have to take care of really long hair, too time-consuming...

mmm...is that a trick question, similar to not wearing white after Labor Day?...Does the length of your hair not depend on your personal feelings and moods, rather than following established (by whom?) rules of etiquette and conduct...I have thus far broken a few of those, and follow my very own insticts and likes/dislikes.....
We do encounter many men who have a partiality to long hair on a woman....
The only rule I follow is that the hair needs to be kept clean and manageable if you want it to frame you adequately. I look forward to being 70 with long, flowing hair...just because I want to...

I have very fine hair. When it's short, I wake up with bed head every day. It flies away and gets stuck to things with static. It was a lot more work when it was short than it is long - now I just wash and go - no more blow dryers, rollers or curling irons. Casual work means it's in one long braid or wound up and secured under a hat or with a pencil. Dressy often means that it's up in a fancy twist or braided and wound around into a bun - a couple of bobby pins and I'm done.

Best part about going grey - my grey is shiny silver and each grey strand is thicker than the black/dark brown of the rest. It colours beautifully, too.

I had long hair but it was a pain. I was too exhausted to do anything else. There is the expense. It is expensive to maintain long hair and it will bankrupt you if you do beauty trips on a regular basis. I decided that the long hair belongs on the younger ladies and as you get older the hair does get shorter. I have seen long blonde hair on a 70 year old woman but it does not look becoming, on the other hand I have seen it on a 70 year old man and, enough said.....

But truly, I have noticed that the ladies as they age, start to entertain the styles of shorter hair. They are the ones that look classy and presentable, and with substance between the ears. Not to mention that our bodies do not have that kind of energy to raise the arms, bend over to dry, and sometimes you need help getting back up.

That was a good topic. You have no idea how many times that has come to my mind when I sit there and people watch.

There are the same requirements of older women with longer hair as men..... none. Please yourself! For me, longer is easier as I can wear it naturally curly or dress it up in five minutes for a night out. Havent needed any help straightening myself up from blow drying lol.

Thanks for all the responses from both sexes. I have a sister who had long hair when she was younger (while our mother "insisted" I looked cute *yak* in a pixie style) and I always envied her for getting to keep hers long. She cut it very short in her early 20s when she broke up with a guy out of spite. He had told her if you ever cut your hair, it's over. Well - she called his bluff and has been very happy with a short sassy cut for 30 years.

I've heard it said that long hair adds/takes away years and wanted to know what others "my age" and older thought of the matter. As for cutting it short...well, I realize it will grow back but I don't have the patience to wait. Lol. Or the money to pay for extensions until it does.

Of course, I could just walk around with a sweater over my head like I did as a kid with that little pixie cut but I'd rather not.

It's good to know that there are so many women who choose to keep the long locks even if some in society think that long hair should stay with the 20-something crowd. I agree that long makes me feel more feminine and I think short hair needs a certain bone structure to be beautiful. (referring to all the Halley Barre posts)

Then again, if you saw the movie "Waiting to Exhale" 40-something Angela Bassett's character lops off her long hair ala Barre and looks absolutely sexy and feminine. Guess some women can pull off short hair - just don't think I'm one. But sometimes I wish...

A woman should be able to wear her hair the way that SHE wants, regardless of age. I think the statement that older women shouldn't wear their hair long is insulting and ridiculous.

I get my hair whacked off every once in a while ... I'll have to dig up a picture and post it. My hair grows so doggone fast though ... I end up having to go get it trimmed every three weeks ... easier and cheaper to let it grow. Glad that with all the natural waves that it looks nice either short or long.

Speaking of my experience it was mostly men saying that they liked long hair, how sexy it was, and kept the women looking younger. I kept long hair for this reason. Thinking if I cut it off then there goes my sexappeal and look more my age. I had hair down to almost my knees always kept it well maintained and trimmed. I recall time's I peed on it, had doors open along with my hair, and closed doors with it caught. My neck ached always. Finally I met a girl who had cancer she was 6. She loved to comb my hair, as she had none. One day I walked into the Salon and said cut this off. It took 4 people before one did it, out of fear that I would scream omg what have I done. I began to get looks not like I was some arm candy anymore and began to also attract the men I prefer too, not one's who are into 'image' (and still some say I look sexy). I no longer have any neck problems, and those other issues, and expenses to maintain. Maybe more people will state I look my age, but heck I am proud of it! Like you I was always tying it back so what was the point to having long hair then? When pulled back it looked short and flat on my head, and unflattering. Now It's layered and has style and I can do so much with it. I love it. Also ask your stylist if your what style your face now suits. As we get older are face changes and so does gravity of the skin. Sometime's longer hair can make you look older, or less flattering. I won't grow it back again long, as I like that I am doing this for me, not what men think as generally they want most women to have long hair to look like women. What you could do is cut few inches off at a time, see how you feel letting it go. Then it's not so bad to cut more off. Now I won't let it grow and demand my stylist keep it to the length I prefer. Oh by the way I surprised the little girl with her new hair, and now I comb it for her. Remember hair grows back.So if you do it, please donate it to gift for locks, they need hair badly.

I think it's great that you donated your hair to Love Locks to make a wig for a child with cancer, funtastic!. If I choose to cut my hair, that's where it will go as well.

Mine isn't down to my knees - I get it trimmed when I start to sit on it.

I've had mine short and hated it. I love having long hair and don't just wear it pulled back - I can make more styles than that. It hasn't been in a "pony tail" for 20+ years.

What's a stylist? I have my hair cut at the local haircutters - and wouldn't dream of wasting (to me) $50-100 on a "stylist". I'd rather use that money to buy feed for the horses, get their feet trimmed, or even set it aside to put new windows in my house.

Long hair won't make or break my sex appeal. I like it long, so that's the way it'll stay for as long as I want it that way.

***I spray it down with a spray-bottle and comb it. I don't wash it every day. When I do wash it, I don't use conditioner, since it weighs it down too much. I have to use mousse or else it just dries and flies all over the place. I also have to use hair spray to keep it at some kind of shape. I can't grow it long enough to put it into a braid, and pony tails on middle aged women look silly to me. I've been going grey since I was 23, so I also have to color it, I'm not ready yet to go au naturel.

So much to take care of, it has to be the woman's own preference to do or not to do. Short hair, that pixie look, can be awfully sexy, too, for a woman and theres no care at all to it. Some women have the shape for long, some for short, and either could look great on the same woman, too ....all just personal preferences.

"a desperate attempt to hold on to youth"......

I like my long hair, and it has nothing to do with holding on to my youth. It is a practical and racial thing for me. Practical because I don't have to go to the hairdressers once a month to keep my short hair au courrant. Racial because I am Native, and I like having long black hair. Simple really.

Cheers, Raven

Throughout my life I have alternated between long and short - and all the awkward stages in between. Right now I am wishing I had it long, but I know I don't have the patience to grow it out - and then it would drive me nuts before too long, and I would cut it. Besides, those who have seen me with it both ways are in agreement that it looks great now, and I should leave it this way, very short.

For me, short hair is much more convenient. No comb, no brush, no blowdryer - just run some gel through it with my fingers. In the summer, I spend a lot of time in the pool - long hair is just a pain then. My hair is very thick and curly, and takes forever to dry.

One point is that, like skin, hair changes as you age. The texture is not so fine, and, in my case, it is a lot curlier than it used to be. Were I to grow it long, it would not be the silky, wavy locks I had years ago, so I would hardly be "recapturing my youth."

I've had my hair several lengths and styles over the years, but as I've gotten older (and wider...lol), I just feel that I look better with a medium length/style. My hair is like baby hair and having it long tends to look "stringy". My skin and hair have always been more on the oily side, so there's a lot of washing going on. My hair now is down to my shoulders, with that "flip-up" style...and there's quite a bit of gray, but I'm not one to color. I'm not a spring chicken and there's no need to try to look like one. I've earned every gray hair I've got...lol. I will say that I had a boss one time that was late 50's - early 60's and she had long white hair...it was awesome! She would french braid it and she looked absolutely adorable ! I think hair length is a matter of preference, comfort, and ease. With men, long hair is a turn on...unless it's about 4 strands of long hair that's swirled around and in a ponytail to look like they have hair. If your hair is turning loose, do us all a favor and either keep it short or shave it off...lol.

I had beautiful long hair, it was georgeous, no extensions, but because it took a bit of time to do in the morning I had the lot chopped off! Don't do it girls - as old as you are - your hair is everything! Hair is power girls! Men love hair, no matter what you're face looks like, they love hair, believe me.
