My hair is past my waist now, and I like it that way.

It is all about what works for you, and I like my hair long.

Beauwood, I agree with you no one including men have any rights telling you how long to wear your hair. I dont know who ever said after certain age cut it off!! I dont like any one telling me what to wear or how to cut hair, think I'm old enough to decide what I want for myself. Please yourself first, every thing else come together!

Age is not the only important criterion. The woman's skin condition and facial shape, and the color, condition and style of the hair all have an impact.
For example, if your skin is wrinkled and your hair is long, graying and frizzy, it may just make you look like an aging hippie.
By contrast, well-conditioned long hair in a flattering style can be beautiful on any woman.
This is a complex question and there is no easy answer.
The most important thing, though, is that a woman be happy and comfortable in her own skin...and hair. Suit yourself first!

Well ladies ,, Im gonna be turning 50! to soon from now ahhahah no im really ok with that,, now the question ? long\short,,, my hair is very thick and naturally curly\wavy so for very long time i kept it short very short for those reasons,
After time i guess 40ish i decided to let it grow out hummm shoulder length , it was ok and yes ill have to agree much easier upkeep could tie it up in many differnt ways and go,,, pretty easy huh,,,
well after bit more time ,, I wanted little style ,, so out came the scissors" hahhaaa and color ,,, yes little more work but gives fresh new look, and as we age just makes yah feel pretty ,, with a bit of sugar and spice!

"thats what little girls are made of right"!

Personally over my twenty- six years as a hairstylist , I'm seeing a lot of mature women

with longer hair. Long hair is always pretty if it is in good condition. Personally I

had shorter hair most of my life. I wear it longer now because that's what I prefer.

Not to offend any one but I just don't find long gray hair attractive on a women.

Of course gray hair has a double standard ... makes a man distinguished at any age.

I love long beautiful hair . Not cutting mine anytime soon!

I've had long hair my entire life. I often wear it up or tie it back when I need a more business look. It's a non-issue for me and truthfully, I'm surprised there is even a thread about it. I find men like it, but I keep it because *I* like it.

I think the hair-length issue is a hold-over from previous generations when older women were "expected" to cut their hair. Several months before my mom passed away 6 years ago, she said to me (out of the blue), "you know you are getting too old for that long hair, don't you? You're going to have to cut that." I said "yes mother". Now I loved my mom, but I recognized where she was coming from. For now and forever, the long hair stays.

I'm over 40 and I have long hair. It's not hard for me to upkeep at all. It depends on the style. Mine frames my face and layered in the back which makes for great curls. I can throw it back in a pony tail or braid it, which by the way, men love a woman who has their hair braided. It's what YOU feel comfortable in that counts, though. Some women look better in short hair and some in long. There are salons out there that have a computer program, I think Penny's does, that takes a photo of your face and gives you various options as to what hair style compliments you the best. Check around your area and see if there is anything that offers this type of service.

If I live to be 100 they will bury me with my (still blonde) long hair down to my ass,
whether it's still mine, extensions or surgically stapled to my scalp

This thread has been going for a while! Most of my life I have had short hair...by choice. Met a person and his preference was for long hair...we made a deal...no facial hair for him and I would grow my hair. Had down the middle of my back. Hated it evey day I had to wash, blow dry, curl, etc. He left and so did the hair! I will never do that again. I am the one who has to deal with the fussing of the long hair not him and I am not much happier. One of those things doing for myself now! It wasn't an age thing, just a personal preference for me.

Wow - I can't believe this thread is still so active. I started this thread last October! I guess I wasn't the only one with concerns.

realdream7: I think the hair-length issue is a hold-over from previous generations when older women were "expected" to cut their hair. See? This is what I mean. While it's not my mom telling me, but a good friend close to my mom's age, I wanted to know what the big deal was. My friend is 65, with VERY curly hair (natural curl) and has kept it short her whole life so she doesn't have to spend time messing with it (at least that's my opinion). Sometimes, I wonder if she's saying that BECAUSE she never had her hair long due to the extreme curl. She's constantly telling me that cutting it off - at least up to my ears - will take 10 years off my look. Actually, I cringe just thinking about it!

I think most guys want women with long hair so they can play with it, but are some women threatened by another woman's long, luxurious locks? (Mine are not that long or luxurious, but they are very thick)

That's okay: we don't care if you do or don't. If my fella loves it, that's good enough for me. . .

Linen-sapphire, and livewired...your hair looks gorgeous! I would like longer hair, just not sure it will be what I want it to be. After my last child, it got really wavy, almost to the point of curly. I don't want to spend hours on it in the morning...when my hair was super short, I just washed, put in a little gel, and went. But I do envy those who can style their hair on those special occassions with up-dos. So, I guess I will just persevere.

I keep my hair long because SO FAR into my 40's, I can. The trick is having a GREAT cut so that it doesn't drag you down, like some women are saying long hair does. I love being a girl!! Is it a pain in the a$$? Yeah, totally, but it isn't the length that is a pain ... it is because I have lots of it and it is naturally curly and I have to fight with it to accentuate the curl or straighten it .... no matter what length it is. The messy updos are heaven sent ... it takes three minutes to weave and twist about 5 of those hair sticks into it when I get out of bed and everyone thinks I spent hours to throw it up and make it look so wild. I don't equate my age with my 'style' or whether I wear my hair long or not .... if I can get away with something at my age, I run with it.

Maybe most women can't pull off wearing their hair long into their 40's .. I would have to say that's pretty well accurate. That ISN'T to say that I don't see smoldering women with really classy short styles. They just have a beautiful facial structure that accentuates it. Some women can really pull off short styles and look stunning. But not many can do the long hair as we age. IF they can, they should do it, simple as that.

I could care less what 'style' dictates. I'm totally not cutting off two feet of hair for some stupid hair trend. I either go curly .... wavy ... pin straight .. whatever suits my mood. I can do a million things with it to suit the occasion and love it. But it's staying long until I can't pull it off anymore. Yes, men love long hair. I guess men perceive it as a sign of femininity, right?

It depend on how you feel about yourself. I prefer the short hair because it is easier for me. I think I look attractive both ways. It doesn't matter who likes it...it's what you like. Besides hair doesn't make the woman sexy...it is the personally.

Women or men ... Hair is all on the .....
How do you feel about it and how does it go with your style.

does it get in the way ... or make a perfect frame for that face.
Its sort of all in what you can live with and like.

I like the feel of long hair and the low cost of maintainence ...[shampoo and conditioner]
now if I was into colour and perm and matching attire.... then maybe I would reconsider.

Mid length hair probably suits most people the best.
short short looks weird on most ladies
super long can work for some too ... but shoulder length plus 3-6 inches feels natural.
and is actually the natural length of my hair.
