I am 69 years old and I don't even remember the last time I had my hair cut. It is quite long and I enjoy that style and feel like it's part of who I am. I agree with all those who have said it is easier to take care of and certainly cheaper since you don't need perms and cuts. My mother wore hers very long as well. My daughter lets hers grow out for awhile then she will get it trimmed but always wears it at least to her shoulders.

I believe it should be a matter of personal choice. You could drive yourself crazy trying to comply with all the "shoulds". lol

A womans hair has long been their crown of glory as it were. Whether we keep it up in a bun or a tail or loose and carefree its our decision to do so. If the men love it, so much the better!
The only time Ive recently considered cutting mine was to donate it to Locks for love who make wigs for cancer patients, but unfortunately mine was colored and they wouldnt accept it. I have found through my stylist that other places will accept it though so I will consider it again.
Until then Rapunzel... Rapunzel...let down your long, long hair, no matter how old your chronological years say you are!!
(and yes if a Prince comes by Im going to do just that)

I like my hair long and prefer it to the shorter hair styles. It reaches just beyond the bottom of my shoulder blades. All I tend to do is wash, condition and leave it to dry, with the odd trim thrown in, for good neasure.

You go girl! I am 57 and I do what I WANT not what someone else tells me especially someone younger with hardly any 'life experience.' I LOVE my hair long and will DIE with my hair long. I look better with it long and it makes me feel much more femine and comforable. In other words....it's ME and if others don't like...oh well. I am F I N E and enjoying being me and REFUSE to get old! I am told all the time I don't look my age and that is BECAUSE I have learned to LOVE ME and TAKE CARE OF ME and that means eating right (not a fantatic though) and exercising (not enough to kill myself though) and being spiritually in touch with my soul. And I don't worship the sun so that cuts down on wrinkles and I use a very good skin care routine. So, if you want to look good at ANY age.....you need to be willing to do what it takes and STOP thinking old. If you THINK you are old you will LOOK it and ACT it and FEEL like it. It's a fact, that your body responds to what you THINK. So think those POSITIVE thoughts and life will be alot happier for you and those around you. BLESSINGS and PEACE

Long hair on women of ANY age is hot! If she can grow long hair, let her. I think too many women listen to hair cutters and 'stylists' about short hair looking better- but these people are biased for money reasons. I know a 51 year old with hair past her shoulders and she is careful whom she lets even trim her hair. If a shop even suggests cutting it short, she leaves and never returns.

As a young girl I had long hair, then in high school I cut it short. I kept it that way for years and it was nice but I was always having to get it cut every two weeks cause it grows so fast. One day when my children where in their teens they ask me to let it grow out some cause they had always seen it real short...so I did. In fact I let it grow out a lot and then one day cut it short again. Now my hair is once again long.

I like my long hair. To me and for me it is easier to take care of. And I do not blow dry now!!! You damage your hair when you blow dry it all the time. (I did not blow dry my hair when it was short either everyday.) I do not put any kind of coloring or highlights in my hair either....never have and don't plan to ever do so. Nor do I have any gray hairs and I am 48 years old.

There is no man in my life to say one way or the other about how I wear my hair. Even if there was....I would still wear it long for me because I like it that way and if he did not....tough sh*t! We do not always get our way on everything!

If I am sounding vain I am sorry, because that is not what I am about. I just like my hair long instead of short because it is more expensive to maintain my hair in a short hair style since it grows fast.

My picture is last year. My hair is much longer now. Put it in a ponytail or under a hat. pinned back or just hanging. I can't do short hair. Never have. Not for me. I'm 58 and a long haired country girl.

Men and Women:
Do the majority of women over 40 still look good with long(er) hair? How long or how short?

At what age should/would women "give up the locks" to remain attractive and "in style"?

Ladies, if you keep your hair long, is it because YOU want to or because the guys all fantasize about the long locks?

OP, I wouldn't say that the "majority" of older women look good with long hair. Just as I think that a woman's hair looks better a bit lighter as you age as well. Longer hair (and darker) can actually make you LOOK OLDER than you are. I happen to be one that does look good with long hair. Of course, I don't look anywhere near my age and that probably has something to do with it. At the point it no longer flatters me, I will cut it. I've had varying lengths of hair throughout my life, and have found that I look more attractive with medium to longer length hair. I love the short pixie cuts on some women...ie. Halle Berry, but they just don't flatter me. I've had short hair before. It all depends on the individual. Some older women look horrendous with long hair, but you couldn't convince them of that fact if you hit them with a "2x4!" I've known women like that. I also can't stand it when someone has really thin hair or needs to cut several inches off of it to make it look "healthy." If you are going to have long hair, you need to keep it trimmed, conditioned, and well-groomed...and that goes whether you are a woman OR a man.

As far as what age someone should give up longer hair, that depends upon the individual. Some older women are quite attractive with longer locks while some look like hell. I always think that long hair will be "in style"...it's just not always the most flattering style for some of those that choose it.

I keep my hair long because *I* like it. I rarely do things because some MAN wants me to do it. I make my own decisions. I personally like the way it looks and feels and it also makes me feel very "sexy." Plus, it's always fun when a guy grabs ahold of it...*wink* I've found that the majority of men like it as well. I've gotten compliments on my longer hair all my life as it's been a "constant" for a vast majority of it!

I've worn my hair alot of different ways, long , short and in between. I always go back to long. It's just my personal preference and I really don't care if anyone else likes it or not!

...I think most males prefer the ladies to wear their hair longer, my dad used to get mad at my mom when she would cut her hair or mine. As I got older I realized that for my face type, I don't suit the longer locks. I look better in the shorter styles. And thats what its about, your hair length should be your own personal preference, not someone else's.

I love longer hair on a woman, very sensuous, but it depends on HOW long the hair is. If its shoulder length, and its clean, I love running my fingers through her hair. And its great, during sex, having her hair fall into my face, makes me all warm and fuzzy, and its very sexual, especially when she drags her hair down my chest.

I always thought long hair on an older woman would be inappropriate - that is, until I got to be older myself. Then my opinion changed to: whatever makes you happy and doesn't hurt anyone else is just fine.

So I have long hair and have had for a long time although I have also worn it short and would do so again if I felt like it. For the time being though, my hair is easy to manage, can be worn in many flattering ways and makes me feel good. The streaks of gray through it make it even more sexy.

I think my primary message is: as I grow older (and wiser I hope), it doesn't pay to think inside the box. There are so many exceptions to the rule and that's what makes life so interesting.

I have felt the time has come to address my hair. It's been growing and growing, but seems to just hang with little whispy bit's that have a mind of their own.
I'm going for the chop chop this weekend, and I'm looking forward to it.
I'm not going short short, just short enough so it's no longer a pain to care for.
Long hair on most people looks fantastic if it's well maintained, but long thin stringy locks looks terrible, and I have long stringy locks!

I have also had long hair most of my life. I had it cut twice above my shoulders. Last time was 30 years ago. I have natural curly hair and short cuts were unmanageable for me. I found that when it was longer it pulled the curl out to a wave and it felt more comfortable. I kept telling myself that when I turned 50 my locks had to go. But when that happened, I couldn't do it. I love long hair and I think I look better in longer hair.

I am 53 now. I think that it is unfair for some to say that we are struggling in a desperate attempt to stay young by not cutting our hair short. I am also thinking outside the box now. I don't care if my hair gets thin or scraggly. I'll wear it in a pony tail or a bun. I will die with long hair because that's me.

There is a large group of people, who, as they mature into their 40s or 50s, seem to either "give up" or "don't care to be" sexually attractive to the opposite sex. Hair is only one aspect of that. When a woman has "can't be bothered" short hair, it's a pretty good indication to me, that she is likely to be disinterested in having the kind of relationship that I would want.

Not content to "retire" from being sexually desirable themselves, they feel threatened by women, who still look good to men, at a similar age. It limits their opportunities to "make great friends" with men, someone to accompany them, as they go thrifting or shopping for shoes, that they can call a "relationship", so they will try to pretend that they are the emotionally healthy ones, and try to pressure women their age, who look good, to stop doing those things that make them attractive to men.

Bottom line, to the vast majority of men, long hair on a woman is appealing. It's very feminine, and a "turn on".

I like my hair better long than short. It was long (almost to my waste) but then I got cancer and lost it all because of the chemo. Now it is back past my bra strap and I coudn't be happier. As long as it is healthy a woman should wear it any way she chooses and not care what other people think.

I personally don't choose my hairstyle by what anyone else likes to be honest. although my kids do love to inject their opinions lol. I think we should all do what we want with our hair and choose the way we dress to make us happy not to please someone else.

I have long hair down to the middle of my back. I love it.

ALL hair takes time to wash, condition, set/blow-dry, color......what's the big deal?
In hot weather I wear a pony-tail, or for dressy a chignon.....

I tried short hair a few years ago and I looked like shit.

I swim a couple times a week for exercise (it's the best kind for me, personally). Long hair wouldn't be a problem in the summer but in our long, very cold Wisconsin winters, I don't want to add 20 minutes in the locker room drying long hair before going outside. That's the only reason I keep my hair very short. I've tried swim caps and they don't keep the hair dry.

Until I was doing regular swimming though, I liked my quite long hair. And I enjoyed all the many different ways you could style it... braids, coils, buns, snoods (yes snoods), combs, barrettes, scrunchies.

I so love snoods. I used to horrify my Harley friends. I wore a snood under my helmet to protect my long hair from helmet head, and from being wind damaged on the bike. The looks on their faces the first time they would see me put on my snood was priceless.

Yes, winter does annoy me in general, but the fact that air drying my hair in the winter makes me chilled really annoys me. It doesn't annoy me enough to cut my long hair though. I can't imagine ever having short hair. It would be similar to loosing a limb. That may sound like a drama queen and I am a practical women. However, when it comes to my long hair, I won't be giving it up for anything. No even cancer, as I don't believe in chemo, and would choose a holistic cure. (yes, I have seen the holistic cure work.)

Hmmm well first off I don't consider myself an older woman
My hair is past my shoulders and on my days off I got my ball cap on with my hair up in a pony tail. I've had short hair and it takes alot more time to style it, so by me being lazy and kinda a tomboy I'll keep my long hair and my caps
