| Long hair on older women Posted: 9/26/2007 3:20:24 PM | mine is long because i like it long....every man i have dated likes it long.
short hair doesn't work for everyone...and on some women it does look butch. and to be honest...once you've lost all your hair and had to let it grow back out, you see both sides of the spectrum.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 9/26/2007 4:15:29 PM | My thoughts
I don't like long hair for an older woman unless they are very healthy looking and well kept. I have seen many long grey hair that are thin and look awful, slobbish. Mine (I'm 55) are a little past the shoulder blades... I would call it medium length. I keep them coloured and trimmed, and shiny.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 9/26/2007 11:30:51 PM | I think this is sooo funny that this is still alive!
Long hair on older women. Well, since I lasted posted here I've gained a year in age...and my hair is still long!
I have cut some bangs since then. Now, most of my girl friends have all cut their hair. A couple have admitted to being envious of my hair. Two say, since I cut the bangs, that my hair would fluff up so nice if it was short. One is a retired hair dresser! She walks slowly towards me wiggling her fingers with this manical look on her face fixating a stare at my head!
All my female friends take turns walking up behind me and stroke my hair. All my male friends love it and wish they had the courage to walk up and stroke my hair!
Its long and full. There are not raggedy ends and it does not look bedraggled. Its very healthy and shinny. There is grey starting to appear. So what. I'm 56. I think the state of someones hair reflects the health of that person. Be it short or long, thin or thick.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 9/26/2007 11:58:04 PM | | I like long hair for me. I also know some older women who look great with short hair. I think it's what gives you the most confidence about yourself that counts. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 9/27/2007 9:36:33 AM | I have worn mine long since age 16. I was glad to say goodbye to huge rollers, hairsprays, and the hair 'teasing" that was fashionable in the mid 60s. Then along came the hippie look and I was right in fashion.
It takes me awhile to brush my hair, but that's way preferable to all the maintenance short hair requires: frequent trips to the salon, curling/styling irons, etc.
Sometimes i think my hair looks "raggedy", but that's me: the hippie look. With my skinny face I would look far worse with short hair. I think the short permed hair makes women look older. My mom had that look. It is a 'grandmother' look. Once you get a perm, I'm told your hair is "ruined" as far as looking natural.
Yes I would like my hair to look less 'ragged" but I can't find a stylist who can create what I want. First thing I go in the shop and they want to start cutting & cutting. So I don't go to the shop anymore.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 9/27/2007 5:09:45 PM | Hi:
I've had short hair most of my life --- short and straight. Always wanted long, curly hair so, last year, I spent a ton of money and had extensions put in. Welllll, I HATED it!!! It was as much, if not more, of a hassle than short hair. So, after I had the extensions taken out, I decided I'd let my own hair grow. Then, one day, my daughter said "Mom, I like you better in short hair". So I got it cut a little bit. Then I got it cut shorter the next time. Now, I'm almost 60, and once I got it cut short again, I started getting all kinds of compliments and men actually paying attention to me --- bottom line is --- whatever makes YOU happy and YOU feel comfortable with, that's the only thing that counts. Yes, I absolutely love long hair. And, as some kind of sick joke, almost all of my friends have long, beautiful, naturally curly hair. Go figure!!
I guess the answer is --- be happy you have hair.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 9/29/2007 10:08:48 AM | | I go back and forth on the subject of my long hair all the time. I decided as long as it looks healthy and it doesn't age me, I will keep it longer ( for now) lol | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 9/29/2007 7:40:03 PM | "i personaly dont like long hair in men"
Actually that's one of my buttons. I love long hair on men!!!! I came of age in the Hippie times and within a few years guys went from crew cuts to long & flowing. Yum!! It stood for a complete change in mind-set from 50s conformity to 60's free-spiritedness. That established my ideal of beauty for my whole life. Even now when I see a guy with long hair I think "that's a kindred spirit".
Unfortunately most of those hippies have lost that beautiful hair.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 9/30/2007 12:29:44 PM | | Healthy long hair, in shades of silver and white, pulled back in a bun on an 80 yr old is glamourous. I've seen it. How about that old lady in "Titanic". Healthy hair is what matters at any length. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 10/2/2007 7:27:08 AM | There comes a time when you have to decide what's best for you, no matter what your sons, husbands, bf's, buddies, etc. think and I came to that last year when I had bypass surgery. I remember waking up a bit too soon in surgery, and throwing up. When I woke up my hair was in a wooly mess at the back of my head. It was CLEAN, but they must have buffed it between their hands with a towel. For days I sweated my butt off, and was suffering so much, I said, "when I get home this **** comes OFF!", and I did it. I found out later the sweating was a combination of things, but I'd still have HAD to make the same decision as it turned out. Not only do I have hot flashes, but morphine makes you sweat like crazy, so no wonder I was always damp on my head and back in the hospital! I don't have many hot flashes, I have more night sweats. ANd then post surgery you mix that with severe nerve pain (when your chest nerves try to grow back and connect they forget to tell you that you are gonna HURRRRRRRT!), and not being able to raise your arms to shampoo and all that, you'll decide fast that hair is a pain, and you don't care WHO it ticks off, and cut it. It was much easier using a dime size dab of shampoo than a hand full, twice, plus conditioner, then combing and drying! I had long hair most of my life, and like someone else here had oily skin, so I was always washing it. I had short hair years ago, and loved it but every man in my life and total strangers, too, begged me to grow it out again. I had my niece who's a hairdresser in OK, and was visiting at the time, to cut it off for me. It grew to about shoulder length, and I had it permed, but it spent all those months clipped in back, off my neck because I burn up. Recently I got it cut off like a boys haircut, just before going to my son's Army graduation in SC. Good thing too, cause it was 105 in the shade and I was fighting not to pass out all weekend. I thinjk IMHO that most ladies like long hair, as much as the men do, but sometimes there are really good reasons we can't handle it anymore, like menopause, and you'll just have to love us anyway. I wouldn't make a man have long hair if it caused him to have heat stroke, and yet I love long hair on guys as long as it's clean. Then again most guys with long hair, and I mean REALLY long hair, have gorgeous hair and keep it very well groomed! Have a good day everyone! Sally | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 10/2/2007 1:57:32 PM | I'm 56 and through the years I've observed women where I work, Church and the gym (YMCA). As time marched on they cut their hair shorter and shorter. Occasionally I'd ask why and the reason given most often was, "I don't want to have to take care of it." When I asked how their husbands/boy friends felt the typical terse response was, "I don't care. If they don't like it that's to bad!" While women certainly have the right to dress and cut their hair as they wish don't condemn men if they prefer something different. Men do have a right to their own likes, feelings and opinions.
Most men (not all) that I am aquainted with, "if given the choice", prefer a woman with long hair: I do. However, most men are hesitant to say too much about a womans looks, clothing style or hair style because an argument or the cold shoulder will many times follow.
What bothers me is not the question" is long or short more attractive?" It's the "I don't care what a man thinks" attitide. Women are always giving men their opinions on what a woman likes and expects him to listen. Heaven help the man who says, "I prefer a woman with long hair and not significantly over weight!" He's violated one of the three sins of the male gender by aluding to:
1. Weight 2. Age 3. Are you going through Medipause?

| Long hair on older women Posted: 10/2/2007 3:01:47 PM | | I think it is a personal thing & trust me, not all women over 40 have "scraggly" hair. Nor is it an attempt to do anything other than feel comfortable with me. No desperation envolved. | |

| long hair on older women Posted: 10/2/2007 3:11:25 PM | What I know is all I know. Hi, I am an oollldder woman with long hair. And I love it! Honey, when everything else is going south, you still have your hair. If you haven't figured how to care for it by now, you should cut yours. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 10/2/2007 9:56:06 PM | I keep my hair long because "I" like it that way. If a man likes it too, great. To me there is no precise age to give up the long locks. I think it is all about how you feel. Maybe if you feel young inside, it will project to the outside. (At least I hope so.) I have seen some older women....even older than me, that keep their hair long but styled nicely. When I FEEL my age maybe I will change it, but I don't see that happening any time soon. I know that it takes longer to dry and style longer hair, but who are you doing it for, yourself or a man? | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 10/3/2007 1:27:47 AM | | I think short hair is sexy myself particularly when the woman has a long kneck or at least hair tied up. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 10/3/2007 5:41:31 AM | I'm 35. When I was in my teens and early 20s, I wore my hair short. Men just didn't seem to notice. Friends told me it was probably because of the hair thing, that I simply didn't look good in short hair. So, I spent years growning it out. Long hair is a pain. It takes a lot more time, brushing, combing, curling, etc. My hair also gets split ends frequently and requires salon deep conditioning treatments regularly to prevent that. So, long hair can be expensive to maintain. I just don't look good in short hair. Thats the reason it's long and I intend to let it grow as long as it can get. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 10/3/2007 7:13:58 AM | | While I was growing up and my mom cared for my hair, she always made me keep it boy short and I wanted long hair so much. Then when I got married, my ex wanted it short so again I acquiesed and kept it short. I am divorced after 30 years of marriage and now it is my time and my hair is growing and getting very long. I've not gotten anything but compliments on it. It makes me feel more like a sexy woman and I love it. Heck, I may never cut it again. By the way, I am 64. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 10/3/2007 8:53:53 AM | You must look lovely.....don't "give up the locks" when you can't brush it yourself.....give me a call..!! | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 10/3/2007 10:45:00 AM | i have long hair, i have never had any complaints by men. there are women out there who think that you should not wear blue jeans or have long hair when your over but u know what i look good and i am told that. so i think that whatever you want should be your choice and you should not be put in a group and labeled. who ever made the rules of how you can dress and wear your hair at , 30,40,50, etc. only those who cant. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 10/3/2007 12:52:08 PM | This may seem completely off the chain, but I insist on long hair.
