| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/2/2007 9:26:23 AM | | Personally, I liked my hair longer (was down to small of my back). For whatever reason I'm not sure of. I have now cut my hair to a shoulder length and I get more compliments on it. Being the age that I am, I suppose it does look better. One doesn't need to wear a pixy to have shorter hair. There's always a happy medium. It is a bit more work to keep my hair shorter, but if the compliments keep coming and it makes me look younger (so I'm told) ... I'll do it. At any rate YOU should be happy with how you want to wear your hair. Besides, does it change who you are by the style of your hair. Nope. You're who you are regardless of the length. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/2/2007 4:08:30 PM | I have always viewed it as, long hair is for young children, teens, twenties and then for the more mature Thirties, fourties and fifties, no longer than shoulder length. Sixties on, definately above shoulders. It is true that long hair on an older women makes her look much older than she is. Also, I have heard men say that they see a women from the back, with long hair, they automatically assume it is a young women. Then, when she turns around, they are surprised.
I also believe that it depends on the woman's, shape of her face, and how she prefers to care for her hair. But, in most cases, older should be shorter, it does, actually make her look younger and more vibrant. There is a lot to be said for "STYLE" and not just hanging there. It is also important for the hair to be not only clean, but, shiney and healthy.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/3/2007 12:35:53 AM | ...don't care for long hair on myself or other older women due in my opinion it appears unprofessional and ages a woman, unless of course, the hair is worn up. It would take a very special older woman to be able to pull off long hair without the additional aging factor, even Demi Moore, who is one of my favorite actresses, in her recent movie appeared somewhat older due her long hair dispite the multiple plastic surgeries.
I love wearing my hair long for several reasons. It's very versatile. When I dress for business in my power suit and heels, I wear it up. I look and feel sophisticated and dressed for success. When I'm casual for a football or baseball game or gym et al I wear it in a pony tail with or without a baseball cap. It looks flirty and cute. When I go out dancing with my friends or on a date, I wear it down. My hair is very long , very full and gets even fuller depending on the weather. I wear it a few inches above my waist. Guys love it and I get a lot of compliments from women, too. If I'm in the mood and I have the time, I sometimes use a flat iron on it to give me a totally different look. It looks really good when I'm on the beach and the balmy ocean breezes blow it around.. guys love the movement and it feels good against my skin. My long hair matches my ethnicity and makes me feel much more feminine than when I wore it short. Not to say that short hair isn't sexy or feminine - because it is - on a woman with the right shaped face and head.
I don't think the length of my hair ages me at all - if it did, I'd schedule plastic surgery rather than cut it without thinking twice!!
Back in my mom's day, once a woman turned thirty it was the norm that she cut it to avoid being considered a bohemian gypsy. Thank heavens that mindset has gone the way of the dial telephone and black and white tv! Today's woman doesn't have the hang ups of the women back in the day. She dresses and styles her hair any way she desires.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/3/2007 7:31:27 AM | | Long hair holds high importance in many cultures, as does short hair or no hair at all. Many native people believe it to be an extension of themselves. But my beliefs are not why my hair is long. It' is part of who I am and who I've been. Many, many memories associated with this hair. I get asked often if I still have my long hair when chatting with old friends on the phone. If it ages me then so be it. And to be truthful, it is so much easier to maintain than short hair ever was for me. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/3/2007 11:34:04 AM | | I agree, longer hair is easier to manage! Most people dispute this, but if you're having a "bad hair" day and your hair is short...you can't do anything but wear a hat...with longer hair, you can braid it, clip it, ponytail...whatever. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/3/2007 3:15:03 PM | | long hair at any age is sexier than short hair except if it's gray hair or if it's extremely dry. then you just look old. i have a friend named caryn who looks really cute with short hair but if she grew it long i think she would look even better if that's possible. | |

wow, it is amazing, women can have long hair, but not if it's gray, because that wouldn't be sexy?
i have never dyed my hair and just because it's graying, i will not be cutting it, gray hair on men is considered sexy, on women it's lovely too, whether it's short or long~

| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/5/2007 8:38:29 AM | Hmmm..split ends? And why colored? I would think that split ends on anyones hair short or long looks bad..and..by colored..do you mean coloring gray hairs?
My hair is very long..waist length and sometimes longer..I keep it trimmed..and am a natural blonde. If there is gray in it..it's still impossible to see at 48..nearly 49. I've been told I look VERY young for my age by men AND women. I have always had long hair and "maintenance" has never been a problem. Blow dry? That's maybe where these split ends come into play. I don't..it's wash and wear for me! Expensive shampoos and conditioners..never! Hot oil treatments..never had to have one of those either. Summer heat is no problem..and it doubles as a scarf in the winter and helps to keep me warm in a northestern climate.
I think it all depends on how a person looks and feels with whatever length their hair is..beauty is only skin deep..and is always in the eye of the beholder!!!

| 'Long Locks'... Posted: 11/5/2007 8:51:33 AM | | WOW! So hostile over long hair? When I was married the only hair I found EVERYWHERE was my balding husbands..LMAO!!! Should men have long or short hair..and to what age should they be able to keep it long? | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/5/2007 12:59:29 PM | I just wanted to make a comment: I can't believe how many hits this topic has had. I am surprised that such a high number of people find this subject so interesting and important.
Another thing, there are some women that are too focused on just their hair. They are always fussing with it, or handling it, especially when being watched or talking to a male. This is a nervious, insecure gesture. A women is more than her hair, body or clothes. It is what comes from the Soul that makes a woman "Beautiful". This can also be said for men.
For what good is it to have perfect hair or anything else, if what is inside is empty, dark or shallow.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/5/2007 7:02:43 PM | | Even I have a bad hair day once in awhile. All kidding aside, I've seen "older" women with long hair who look sensational, it's all an individual thing. We're all different. I cut my hair short about 12 years ago when I started swimming on a regular basis, it was just easier to maintain. One time, I got called "SIR" and I freaked out, decided to grow it out again. Isn't that ridiculous. Then I cut it short again, I really like it. Let 'em call me SIR, it's funny. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/6/2007 12:14:22 AM | I dont know if I look older or not I like my hair long and short it depends on how I am feeling that year .I've been told I look younger but I am not going to persume I do look younger some people will lie to you to make you feel good and most of us older ladies want to feel we look younger than we are but I am realist I think I look my age .I am not trying being rude but you do look 48 just like I look 56 | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/6/2007 5:29:51 AM | Oh, I think a lot of men and women think they look younger then their ages! I think it's because they keep expecting to look like their mothers or fathers and I don't think this generation is ever going to look like that. It's more useful to compare to each other.
I do have long hair and yes, it DOES make me look older. But I live at the beach and I don't like to fuss with my hair and it's so easy to take care of. I wear it in a ponytail most times and I've gotten lots of compliments about it. And yes! My hair is gray with blonde highlights. It used to be blonde but the gray is catching up quick!
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/6/2007 8:51:36 AM | Well Queen.. I never said I thought I looked younger..but said others have told me so..people I don't know..and don't know me. I'm not going to presume they're liars..lol. Some people age differently then others..and maybe to you I do look 48..or 58..or maybe even 88. I also think I look my age of 48. All I'm saying is..my hair doesn't make me look old..or feel a certain age..it's just me. This is how I am..with long hair..and..people can either accept me as I am..or not! Personally..I think I look horrible with short hair. I have natural blonde baby fine hair..when short it has to be fluffed and styled. Long hair is best for me..cuz it's just a wash and wear. Oh and..is it you don't know if I look younger as you claim in your first sentence..or..I look my age..as in your last sentence? Wishy-washy..like your style! Yeah..that was rude! | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 11/11/2007 9:10:34 AM | | I think that the length of the hair style should be what the person is most comfortable with and not have to go by what everyone else thinks. For years I wore my hair long because I wanted to and about 9 weeks ago I cut it to shoulder length because I wanted to. A person has to be happy about themselves and how they look. | |

....You expressed it better than I ever could...I can't believe the number of people are so focused on the length of the hair.
