I love longer hair (in both sexes). But knowing the work involved with keeping long hair not looking like a rat's nest, I can certainly understand how the opposite sex might wish to do the same as the years go by. No ... that's wrong ... it's not at all a lot of work. I see too that a lot of women on here with longer hair have posted that it's just wash and go ... easy and breezy.
It's the same with me ... my hair is almost to my waist ... "wash and go". As it dries, in come the curls and waves. Once it's dry, I just use a scrungee and pop it up on top of my head (while working with my clients). When I get home ... down it comes ... flowing sensually across my shoulders.
I live in a warm climate and when I go out at night I have on summer dresses with spaghetti straps or even strapless tops. It really makes me feel sexy and sensual to feel my hair drifting across my shoulders as I walk along, or sit at a sidewalk cafe with the breeze blowing softly.
I go out singing (Karaoke) and believe it or not, men have actually come up and brushed my hair back a little and asked me if they can buy me a drink and chat. You can just tell how much they like the long hair.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/26/2008 7:00:01 PM | Well TexanAZ: YOU tell me!!!!
I will be 47 in June and have always worn my hair shoulder-length or longer...and, I have had no complaints. I'm basically a "wash and go" type of girl, as my hair has curl and wave to it, but I do occasionally like to use a flat iron to make my hair straight and, it will basically resemble Jennifer Anniston's hair. (Not that I am trying to emulate her), but that is what it looks like.
I'm not keeping it long because men will have "fantasies" as you put it, but an occasional hair tug is SURE nice...lol.
But seriously, I think that I still exude youth on my side and prefer my hair long. When and if, I age "gracefully", I will certainly go with the flow, let my hair get salt and pepper naturally when I'm maybe in my 60's and then cut it shorter as time dictates.
That's my two cents on the matter. For now...
singing.."Give me down to there, HAIR, shoulder-length or longer...."

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/26/2008 8:25:46 PM | | We should wear our hair whatever length we feel is appealing to us ...no one else...my hair has been almost to my waist as well as cut to my earlobes ...I love the change and have found that the men I have dated have been more attractted to the color (red) then the length lol! | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/26/2008 8:40:42 PM | Well, good topic... I grew my hair out, it is thick, long and wavy. It requires more care now than it used to. It is as others have mentioned, easier to put up, ponytail, etc in the summer. If I cut it now, I would keep it mid length, but afraid to cut it, as it took long time to get it this long, It is more than half way down my back, past bra line. I get compliements from men and women. I think it makes me appear youthful. I wont keep it long forever. My mom still has long hair and she is 66, although it isnt as long as it used to be. I find I lose so much hair it is scary. It is all over the floor, my car, my chair at work, on my clothes. I dont know if this is due to poor diet, or age or because it is so thick? But I do know I lose more now than I did in the past. It requires a lot of work, however I think it is worth it, for now...

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/26/2008 9:52:32 PM | I think different length hair suits different women but I don't think any age, 40 in particular, should be what determines how long a woman's hair is. As long as it is smooth and silky/shiny, with nice color it looks fine no matter what length it is. Only when women are very old and their hair has thinned a lot does it definately look better if it is cut shorter. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/26/2008 11:26:46 PM | I have to agree with Red....its amazing this thread is almost as long as my hair! | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/27/2008 8:06:32 AM | Depends some people long hair looks great. Some people look better with shorter hair. Age has nothing to do with it. They say, myth, women should go lighter and shorter with age, makes you look younger. I did that at 43 cut my hair off and went blonde. now it is past my shoulders again quit a bit, not near where it was. but who knows. wont go as long as i did to my butt, but , i have a hair piece for the occasion. if i want a change. hard to put a short wig on to me short hair more work. but, i still think my hair is short, but i like it a change | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/27/2008 8:56:37 AM | I have had long hair always (except at one point when I was 28 and lost my mind one day and had it cut off to try a new style) I hated it and another time last year when I had it trimmed to half way down my back. I found that I had to blow dry and fuss with it contantly, it was high maintanance and I felt like I was bald even tho it was shoulder length. my hair use to be almost to my knees. I have grown it back but plan on keeping it trimmed to just past my waist. I have read comments here mentioning that older women with long hair are only trying to recapture their youth... I disagree! I keep mine long because it is what feels natural for me. As to whether men like it or not, I feel that everyone is entitled to their opinions and preferences... if a man doesnt like me because I have long hair, they might miss out because they havent taken the time to get to know the woman who lives under the hair! :)... | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/27/2008 9:23:38 AM | thank you, thank you, thank you to all the lovely ladies who have kept their hair long.
it really increases your attractiveness and says to the world i'll wear my hair anyway i want regardless of my age and i won't make excuses for cutting it off.(i've heard the excuses and they suck). if you feel shorter hair is really for you fine. but if you cut it just to make it easier for you shame shame shame. ha ha it takes a little work to have long and i and many of my male cohorts appreciate it.
i'm insane for long hair. you ladies who have it are A#1 to me!!!
if we have a few of the same interests and you live nearby i don't care if you look like death warmed over: if your hair is waist length i'll like you. if it's silky blonde waist length i'll marry you and put you as benefactor in my will!!!!!!!!LOL

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/27/2008 9:45:02 AM | A lot of my girlfriends tell me that I should act my age and keep my hair short. I had it that way for 7 years? Sure it works in my job as a professional but in my off times, I wanted to feel like I am me! lol So I grew it back and to hell with those who don't care for it. It is my head after all! | |

I for one love my short and sexy hair cut...I found it easy when riding with top off (car) and I dont look wind blown. Also takes me 15 min. from shower to out the door...
the key word here is easy...substitute the word lazy or the phrase i couldn't be bothered. either way it sucks. long hair is sexy. short hair usually is not in my view.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/27/2008 3:53:46 PM | I have almost always had long hair. Why? Because I like it that way. Lucky for them, So do the men I know.
I cut my hair short a couple times, once in high school and once in my late twenties. I found it was the short hairstyle that required more work and cost more money to maintain.
Like alot of other poster it's "wash and go" I let it air dry.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/27/2008 7:18:00 PM | | well i'm keeping my long hair. it used to be a bit longer and i am going to let it grow back out. i only recently did the color thing ever since my natural hair is light brown/dark blonde. so i'm keeping the color and trying to get it longer. men do like long hair but their top preference is that you be a stick figure and some require brunette hair in addition, but some want only this color hair too. so i compromised and did the blonde since that is closer to my natural color than dark. yeah i've had guys come up and touch my hair. also, i went to central america and couldn't walk down the street without people coming up to try to touch it. that was scary then although most were very very gentle as they did it. i think the cliche about older women having to cut their hair is just an outdated cliche. styles have changed and it's more important to just have a current style even if it's longer, if you are concerned about fashion. | |

Agreed. Actually, my ex loved my short, short hair and I wore short hair most of my life. At one point I looked in the mirror and decided I was definitely looking "butch" (not that it's a bad thing!).
Ergo, the softer me, with slightly longer hair.........which is destined to get a wee bit longer.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/30/2008 6:54:30 AM | | I just cut my long hair to short and sassy and everyone says I look younger. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 4/30/2008 8:29:43 PM | when i was 35 i thought i was too old for the long hair thing and so i cut it in a very shrt bob. absoluty hated it and had to look at it every day. today i have very long hair, very thick. im able to tie it a knot when i get too hot which is a great help ill be 50 at the end of the year and my long hair is staying right where it is. at my age i am very past caring less what other people think of my hair. they dont pay my bills and they dont have to look in my mirror. if they did pay my bills they would still have no say as i am me and thats what you get | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 5/2/2008 6:40:19 PM | Those that say women over 30 should not have long hair, are in the hair cutting business!!! It's a marketing ploy! Just my himble opinion. Now when your hair is long and you want it short you can always put up a very sexy French twist. Day or night. I think that is the sexist hair do on us women. When your hair is short you can never change your hair style , you always look the same. Long hair no matter what the age. I say Layerd Long hair is for women that feel and still think sexy thoughts. Grow hair grow, I just can't wait for my hair to grow back in. I cut it to do a cleanse thing along with no sex, and living alone with no influences. I will never cut my hair until I no longer want sex. I like my long hair always pulled up into a water fall, a curly water fall, many styles are avaible for long hair. Long hair is for styling new doos all the time not just to be tied up except if you have an outside job, that makes sense but for going out learn a new do. Do not cut it except mabye to layer it. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 5/2/2008 7:34:58 PM | | I like the flexibility of my long hair. It is not difficult to maintain: wash it in the shower every morning, blow dry it and I'm ready to go.......I also don't think it is a matter of short or long hair on any person with respect to age. If it looks good and it's what you want to do, then just do it !!! | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 5/2/2008 8:19:30 PM | Many women as they age, experience hair thinning. The thinner the hair, the better a short cut flatters. If the older gal has the tresses... flaunt them! | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 5/2/2008 9:28:20 PM | | What ever suits the woman... and there's a difference between short hair and butch hair... I believe either can look feminine... I like my long hair, it's not down to my rear but I like style to any hair length. Keeping it clean & kept is most important and yes, some look younger with it short... when I feel my hair is dragging down my face then it may go short and sassy.... what's more important is to keep up with new styles.. the mullets and wings don't cut it... | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 5/3/2008 9:43:17 AM | The question is how long, and how OLD
A woman approaching 45-50 is unlikely to look appropriate with hair down
her back like a college coed (with bangs even)..in fact it can look downright
silly it seems...but there are some women who still believe there is no such
thing as even dressing appropriately...just look at some of the scary lookers here.
Some older women approaching 45-50 believe that they can get away with shopping
in the Junior's Department too...which again, can look SILLY on a mature women.
What's next ? Low slung hip-hugging jeans with bare midriff tops ?? Nose studs ??
Butt Tattoos ? Micro-mini skirts with 5 inch high heels ? Halter tops ?
Again, there is a limit...there are some 'style domains' that belong on much younger
women, no matter if the older more mature woman of 45-50 can 'fit' into those
'styles'.....that includes hair styles as well. Although it's clearly a matter of personal
taste, some women have a delusional view of themselves, or tend to use a man's
'prism' to consider what is her appropriate image set forth.....which in itself is a bit
crazy......still others deny what they see happening in the mirror.....an aging individual
hence they grasp images that are reminiscent of years earlier......of adopt 'styles'
seen on MUCH younger model faces and truly believe they too look 'cute' wearing the
same style.....and even get TOLD that by they hairdressers and stylists because they
are clearly getting PAID to suggest a 'new look', or they wouldn't make any money...
then as soon as they leave the salon after dropping $250, the stylists snicker as they
leave.
Most times it looks fairly silly on older women......
Sometimes older women can't understand graceful aging and change......
Other times they get sold a bill of goods.....
Still others refuse to acknowledge the truth in their mirrors or want
their mirrors to lie in a strange 'freeze frame'
