| Long hair on older women Posted: 5/29/2008 9:28:52 AM | i will be 56 my next birthday,, have always had long hair,, i like it that way..i find it no more difficult to upkeep then those who spend the bucks on keeping it colored and cut short..end of story.. Yeah!!! long hair.. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 5/29/2008 6:51:35 PM | I started wearing my hair short when my first child was born - faster, easier, harder for babies to pull!!
Finally decided to start growing it out a few years ago, thinking it'd be the last time I'd have it long. And, I kinda like it! I know it makes me look younger than a short cut does. But, It's nice to be able to pull it back in a ponytail or up in a clip when I'm laying in the sun.
I haven't met anyone yet who says they wish I'd cut it short!

| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 9:14:18 AM | Frankly LONG hair on older women (say late 40s and older)
can look pretty unflattering to downright inappropriate. An otherwise
lovely and aging women can look silly attempting to adopt the trappings
of a much younger woman.....like with bangs and a ponytail. Very FEW women
can get away with it....FEW. Older women with hair down their backs like a
college coed or a 25 year old can appear stylishly 'out of place', even fake.
It's like women over 40s sporting a new butt tattoo, low-slung hip hugging jeans,
nose studs, micro-mini skirts, six inch heels, bare-midriff tops, and the like...
IT LOOKS MOSTLY LIKE THEY ARE TRYING TO COMPETE with women 20
years their junior.....and that is very very foolish indeed. But some women don't
fully grasp a thing called 'time', and another thing called 'style'.....an older woman
should always put her best foot forward, but never reach back in TIME to a time gone
and will never return. Just because a woman can 'fit' into clothes in the Junior's de
partment, doesn't mean she should be WEARING THEM. For example, young school
girls look fine in 'pigtails' or braids..........a woman over 40 would look like a fool
to say the minimum. Time moves on....even when some women don't, or can't
seem to acknowledge it....a 'Farrah Fawcett do' (or similar) on a 50 or 60 year old
attractive woman can look downright stupid it seems.
Everything in its season

| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 9:31:46 AM | Wow Sara,I feel bad for you.I am way over 40 and I am PROUD I look good in my long hair all the way down my back.stupid,a fool??? I dont think so,Gentlemen what do you think????Show me the book that says You cant have long hair after 40. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 1:53:22 PM | | SaraMana....Where in this world do you come up with this rubbish? That is about the most ignorant post that I have read yet. I am an "older" woman and I wear my hair short because of the type hair that I have but long hair can look beautiful on an older woman ( and over 40 is not old) if it is a becoming style for her face and frame, is well groomed and trimmed as needed. You are lumping all women in together. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 2:07:11 PM | | SaraMana is just expressing his opinion. I wear my hair mid length have done so for years. I like it. Hair length has nothing to do with trying to compete with 20 year olds. Saraman, I will agree with some of your remarks in regard to attire but that is the business of the lady that decides what she wants to wear. For every man that may not like it, there will be one that will. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 2:36:59 PM | hmmm...
Everything in its season Well, my long hair helps keep me warm in the winter season.

|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 3:56:48 PM | | I am 56 and you can see from my pic that my hair is long. I look after it and don't colour it - it was red when I was younger and it's answer to going grey is to go what passes for blonde. I used to think that middle-aged women with long hair were holding onto their youth inappropriately. There's certainly truth in that. There is a part of me that says I should know better but my friends, family and strangers tell me it looks good. I suppose if you do what makes you feel good and confident. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 4:05:41 PM | | I prefer women with longer hair regardless of age. I dislike women who feel that they must cut it short and perm it. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 4:06:34 PM | I've had long hair since I was 12 years old. It's very low maintainence, and I don't ever plan to cut it. I'm too old and set in my ways to experiment with new hairstyles now. Besides, it grows really slowly, so it would take me years to get it long again if I cut it and then decided I didn't like it. I'm six feet tall, and have always felt that having long hair sort of balanced things out. I think women with short hair tend to look somewhat taller than women with longer hair, and I sure don't want to look any taller. In my experience, men do like long hair, but that's never been a dealbreaker. I'm 53 and I do think it makes me look younger - I know it makes me feel better about how I look, and that's what counts. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 4:29:59 PM | | Old females with long hair are nothing else but PATHETIC -- as are old men with mullets (hockey hair). Hair becomes more limp & fragile as we do age. Any female trying to relive her "glory days" of the past via the fantasy of her hair is misguided at best. They all end up looking like clone of LILLY MUNSTER. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 4:36:06 PM | | Take a look at my profile and tell me if you really think I look like Lily Munster. Could you possibly sound any dumber? | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 8:31:30 PM | | I think you look really good, paradoxas. I think he is just moaning about his own hairloss. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 8:38:12 PM | | Let him think that...it clears the field for me just a wee bit more. | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/1/2008 9:00:36 PM | .....I personally would prefer to date a man who finds me attractive regardless of the length of my hair....not because of it. Now thats appealing to me.
...maeflowers | |
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/2/2008 7:05:49 AM | YOU are CORRECT....it's an OPINION, not an edict
But looking back on some of the profiles on this site
and specifically on this topic, I could not help but shake my head
and laugh....and wonder if some even own a mirror, or a full-length
mirror.....surely a woman can DO what she wishes !....for godssake
that's what liberty is about......however, they should not capitulate
good taste for convenience, or appropriateness for the preference of men
either.
Heck, I've seen over 45-50 year old women still attempting to wear
micro minis, and 'short-shorts' like they are 19 ! I suppose they 'think'
they look good with that on, when in fact it seems to look foolish and
a bit out of place.....like bare midriff halter tops paired with the short-shorts !
My goodness !! do they have ANY SENSE of 'timing' ?? any remaining sense
of 'style', in re 'age' ?? COMMON SENSE would seem to dictate that as time
moves ON, women should adapt better methodologies and attitudes about
'style', and whether exceedingly long hair is the best 'presentation'. I have asked
many many professional stylists (both men and women), and the vast majority
agree that most well over 40 women (most not all) should not maintain
'school girl length' hair, and most stylists that I have spoken with agree with
the supposition that many women hold on to 'that look' in an attempt to
'hold on' to yesteryear in a very feeble attempt. The majority of those stylists
suggested alternative 'styles' that complimented an 'aging face', jawline, skin tone,
and neckline..........all aspects of a woman that CHANGE dramatically with
age. Most stated this position simply matter of factly with very little equivocation.
Again, looking at some of the profiles here on POF, I really don't think that some
of these women truly get that message, or are blind, or are simply trying to fool
themselves........................
Ever seen a decent looking well-over 40 year old woman with a
butt tattoo ? or a tired looking 50 year old woman with a leg, or an upper breast
tattoo??? Sorry.......that's looks downright silly.....but the shameful thing
is that they don't even know it....
The 'aging process' should not just bring wrinkles.....
It should bring a bit of 'wisdom' through inevitable CHANGE.
|
| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/2/2008 7:08:41 AM | Ditto on 'school girl BANGS'......it doesn't work most times
just look at some of these people on the street

| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/2/2008 8:17:39 AM | Texan, Am wonderfully attached to a woman a few months younger than I whose long hair looked good on her, but tended to be a bit too wild for my unfettered breathing while I slept up next to her. I mentioned this to her ...and w/o any disagreeing, she bought a 'do' magazine and asked me to pick a favorite or two from those shown. I chose the one that she'd already decided to try out. Hmmm.
Have not seen her in-person since she's cut it short, but she looks very good in the pics that she sent me. My own hair might be longer than hers now. Perhaps a new thread is in order and entitled, "long hair on older men" ...unless there's already one out there/'here'.

| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/2/2008 10:34:09 AM | Wow! Some very strong opinions shared in this forum for sure! But that is just what makes the world go round! I wear mine long. First time in years that I have done so. Child rearing, marriage, house, no time to primp for many years. Now that I have the extra time, I enjoy having my long hair back. Who knows how long I will keep it? Besides, I happen to like Lilly Munster dawlinks!!! | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/2/2008 1:41:10 PM | I just got in from washing my car. Wow the looks a gal gets when she wears short shorts and a bikini top. I've never seen so much neck wrenching from the neighbourhood men and the school bus driver before. LOL Of course, I had to brush my LONG hair back with a hair band so it wouldn't drag in the bucket. But, I left my "girlie" bangs in place. Well, there certainly are some strong opinions on the subject about long hair that I didn't even know mattered until I read this forum. ^^^^^^Of course most hairdressers want to convince women to keep a shorter style. That way a lady needs to go to the beauty shop every 4-5 weeks for a trim to keep her style looking good and to keep the beautician's jeans full of money. Their opinion has nothing to do with styles that look good on an older woman because it's all about their paycheque. I think I'll go back outside now, open a beer, lay down on the hood of my car and see what other trouble I can get into. | |

| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/2/2008 3:03:43 PM | i had long hair (down 2 the middle of my back) until recently when i went in 2 have it cut & as u can c by my pic.. my hair`s quite short now.. the reason y i had gotten it all cut off is b/c i went in 2 get tested 4 cancer.. i figure before i went in that i was going 2 be diagnosed w/it.. so i went ahead & got my hair cut (kinda would take the 'shock value' outta my kids if in the event i did have cancer.. then by that time they would be use 2 seeing me w/short hair).. the results came back.. i`m cancer free!.. BUT still have the short hair!..
I had a cancer scare earlier this year (all clear, thankfully) and one of the first thoughts that crossed my mind was "oh nooooo my hair" LOL. Vanity, vanity. :) I had very long hair in high school, down past the middle of my back, and it was always getting caught in chairs or doors. Or getting tugged by someone wanting to flirt, or just touch it. I got it cut fairly short when I had babies, because their little fingers would get caught in it, and it was way more hassle than long.
Now it's only a little below my shoulders, but I too have heard comments (always from women my age or older) about age appropriate lengths. I don't like it short, so I'll be keeping it longer until I don't like it this length anymore.
What's curious to me is the (almost) universal preference for long hair from men. I've heard it for years, but always wondered why.
Gotta run, hair needs a trim :)

| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/2/2008 7:02:03 PM | In my culture as in many long hair is a sign of personal power. Meaning - the woman who takes care of her hair of any length holds her own power. She likes herself enough to have it trimmed when needed and keeps it clean. I will be 58 in a couple of weeks, my hair is long and I like it that way. I wash my hair everynight and condition it. I have always washed my hair everyday so replies as to this being bad for my hair is something that I do not wish to hear. My hairdresser says my hair is very strong and healthy. Since I like my hair the way it is that is all that matters to me. I figure men who want women wth short hair or long hair have their own desires and reasons for this. Hair is beautiful as is the person who keeps it well. | |

But looking back on some of the profiles on this site and specifically on this topic, I could not help but shake my head and laugh saramana- sir, you are no gentleman your "opinion" was stated in such a mean-spirited way that it derserves NO respect- I pity the poor woman that you may ever find that will allow such verbal abuse from your lips- I sure the hell wouldn't put up with you or your words-
I can understand why you hide your profile... my guess is that you are on POF only to inflame- which is pathetic

| Long hair on older women Posted: 6/2/2008 7:52:42 PM | What the hell does long hair have to do with age???
"A desperate attempt to hold onto youth" - what kind of BS is that.
Long hair because my husband thinks it's sexier??? - sure, I liked to please my husband but that isn't the deciding factor. When he was going bald I didn't think to ask him for hair plugs because I wanted a man with hair... how f*cking gay.
