Now I know why my hair got so long so fast. Several months ago I had my roommate cut about 4" off my hair ... just to get it all the same length. I haven't paid much attention to it and noticed the other day, it's just a matter of a few more months and it will be down to my waist.

I keep it pulled back and up away from my face, but let it hang down my back. I used to have a picture that showed how long it was ... accidentally wiped it out when my computer went ... booom!!!

As a child, I recall that my hair grew fast ... but to be honest with you, it seems as if it grows even faster now.

I love my long hair ... wouldn't matter to me if any man I'm with doesn't like it ... I'm not cutting it off.

I have long hair. I just had 8" cut off the bottom of it, and now it is half way down my back. I am about to have it cut short, just for a change. I don't do my hair for anyone but me. I suppose it is a bit of a 'security blanket' as it is very nice shiny, glossy dark hair (with interesting grey streaks!). I am confident it suits me long, but I also love it short. My experience is that when it is short, people assume I am a lesbian! don't ask me why.....Maybe the freedom of short hair 'allows/encourages' me to look around a bit more. Anyway I am looking forward to having it short again, but I always have the choice of growing it again if I want.

I keep my hair shoulder length because it's poker straight and fine, and I really don't know what the hell to do with it. I think I'd look like zippy the pin head if I had it cut short - it would plaster to my scalp. At least I haven't had to dye it yet........ Frankly though, I'm hoping turbans and fruit come back in style, a la Carman Miranda - then I could cover it all up and have nothing to worry about........well, worry about my hair anyway.....then I'd be free to focus on the 10,000 other body parts worth fussing about.........can't decide what to move onto next.....butt? calves? stomach? so much to choose from!

I think on most women over the age of 40 with much longer than shoulder-length hair is just a desperate attempt to hold onto youth.

I think this is a pretty silly comment to make.

It's all to do with preference, and what a woman feels comfortable with. Ive had short hair only once in my life and was told repeatedly it didn't suit me. With long hair I find the things I can do with it are endless.

I have hair down to my waist. I am 55 soon to be 56. I dream of being a little old lady with long braids. My girl friends laugh and say its doable!

I had it really short once when I was in my early forties. My mother had said once a woman is over thirty, she should wear her hair short...so I tried it. Nothing against lesbians...have seveal as friends...but people said I looked like a dike....!

I ,for one, like long hair on a woman...especially if she wears it up
and shows a sexy neck and then lets her hair down
so I can run my fingers through it, massage her head
and then give them both a little tussle....
I like the feeling of long hair as it cascades
against your skin and smells freshly shampooed.
Fetish.... I don't think so...it's just seems so feminine
and alluring.
Women with long hair have me at a disadvantage at any age!
Good Grief!

I know the statement about long hair. I had a jerk ask me "don't you think you are a little old for long hair?" My hair was put back in a clip as I like all hair off my face and brow. My reply.."No, not at all while I still have a lot of it.As I get bald I will go with a shaven head !"
That stopped that conversation in its tracks. Stand up for the right to feel sexy and be what you want. That old maid thing about "to old"..excuse me?? Last time I checked menopause did not make me a dried up prune of a person !! I for one an not "to old" for any tasteful fashion.I was the first wave of women in medicine and I will continue to help redifine what women will be till I die.Youthful is a state of mind and life practice.Long hair is just one indicator of vitality(hair dulls and changes with age). Just as short hair can be beautiful.

I'm sure glad this is not a big issue for me in my own personal quest.

I do have a couple of comments though:
It does appear to me that overweight women do use the very long hair to make them appear slimmer. In my opinion, a better way to appear slimmer wuld be to actually lose the weight. ?

When the hair turns that salt and pepper sort of gnarly looking stage as we age... I have to say..it doesn not look nearly as attractive when it is long. And, if you still choose to wear it long... it requires constant manicuring . (same applies to aging men with long hair)

But, for the most part... I have gotten over using such things as signifigant criteria for who I find attractive.

Hi I am new on here, but I figured I should reply. I think that if your find the right style and color for your confidence than, whatever you decide is good. Long hair or short hair has nothing to do with what other people think. Your the one who has to look and deal with it everyday.

I like my long hair. It's to my waist now. And I don't color it either. Any female that says long hair doesn't look good on older ladies is..well...jealous? LOL!

"long hair doesn't look good on older ladies"

Unheathly hair looks bad short or long. Unless there is a medical reason, there is no reason for age to produce bad hair. Certainly it can be a little thiner, which could be a problem for someone who already had very thin hair. Those who have always had thick hair won't have an issue if our hair thins slightly.

Where does the idea that long hair is more work? Long or short, if a person spends a lot of time fussing with it, it will be time consuming. It is the preference to spend time on hair that is the difference not the length of hair. It is much easier to wash hair, put it in a one second ponytail, and go. Lots of women with long hair spend far less time on their hair than many men with short hair.

Where does the idea come from that as a women ages the quality of her soft, shiny

Where oes the idea come from that hair changes to dry and ugle as we age? Old ladies with dry, ugly hair most probaly had dry, ugly hair when they were young, or they have a health issue.

Maybe those things are happening to your hair, or to the people that you are dating. Please don't assume that they are happening to everybody.

All this is just another of those generalizations that show up often.

When I was very young, I wore my hair very short. It had a gamine appeal and with a younger, perfect face was very fresh, feminine, and pretty.

However, with age, I find that longer hair is more forgiving of less than perfect facial contours.

When I was young, I looked at women who are the age I am now and older, and swore that I'd not go with the de rigeur middle-aged crop. It seemed to me that hair jaw length or longer was much more softening and flattering. I also knew a lovely French woman with gray hair, a stunning figure, who kept her hair long and worn in a chignon. No short crop of curls for her. She held such beauty and mystery.

Also to be considered are body proportions. Widening hips and a shrinking head silhouette = pyramid.

I have to say I gave in to the "Mom you need to cut your hair, and the When are you going to cut your hair ...you look so much younger when it's short." I look just as old now with this short hair as I did before....lol Can't wait for it to grow back! If you keep your hair in good shape who cares how old you are. I can't wait for mine to get silver like my Moms. I will never cut my hair again....Hate it short....lol

I think this is a pretty silly way to comment too and I don't have long hair. What gives people these kind of ideas? What happened to the idea that people do with their appearance what makes them feel good about themselves?

Are we really just a society of media conscience people who only think about the outward appearance and not the inward? How many times is a person rendered gorgeous by a genuine smile that lights their face, smooths their brow, and tranforms them into beauty? What has happened to this simple gesture/thought/act?

Nothing has. We just forget to really look at people nowadays. It makes it so much easier to judge them rather than really know and see them as fellow human beings just plugging along trying to be happy.

I don't think that long hair on older women is so bad. My great aunt had long hair that was white as snow. It was beautiful and when she let it down, it almost reached her waist. I have always had long hair and feel better with it long then short. It also keeps my neck warm in the winter which is a plus.

I think it is really up to how you feel you can manage it. It is a very personal thing.

Nope ... not at all. That's the beauty in it.

Long hair ... wash it, let it dry and you're done. Even less work if you have natural waves (and I do).

Short straight hair needs all kinds of manicuring ... curling irons, spray or mousse, constant trips to the beauty shop for trimming.

Really short hair ... even more trips to the beauty shop to keep the neck "shag" shaved off and trim around the ears.

With my long hair ... I can get the "short" hair effect just by pinning it up or piling it on top of my head.

Feeling my long hair fall down across my shoulders and back ... falling across my breasts ... very sensual indeed.

I like long hair on a woman any age. If she has beautiful hair she probably takes care of the rest of her body as well.

Personally I like my hair short Im 56...I wore it long and always put it up in the back if it wasnt up it made me looked dragged out..depends on the face ofcourse and the style...I think an older woman looks like she is trying to recapture her youth with all that flowing hair then she turns around and looks old..I find it unbecoming...I have 4 grown daughters and they wanted me to go short again about 2 years ago I did and am very happy I think it makes me look younger..I especially hate it when older ladies have the long hair with the roots grey and the rest blonde.....get a dye job fast!!!to each her own but to wear your hair anyway for the sake of a man!!forget it!!If he likes it he can grow his out!!!

I use to have hair down to my waist. I use to get it permed when needed. Little by little I got more and more cut off. I think it looks better shorter as I age. That's my opinion anyways.

I would never keep my hair short or long just to please a man. I do what makes me happy.

I've always had short hair, I just grew it out when I reached my 40s. And the only reason I did is because the longer hair is so much easier to style. If I have to spend more than 10 minutes blow drying and styling my hair it's not for me. So I'll probably keep it until it starts to age me, which long hair has a habit of doing. It really drags down your face, on both men and women.

If you look old, you look old. It doesn't matter if your hair is long or short anymore than it matters if your nails or your clothes are long or short.

Having your hair long or short is about how it makes you feel, and how much time you want to put into your personal style.

Hey, all:

I am sure someone will arbitrarily categorize me for this, but I simply prefer longer hair on any woman. It just looks more feminine and attractive to me that way. When I see a woman in my age range, longer hair certainly is an attractive feature. And please, coloring hair is really not that attractive, as are all the other artificial changes so many women feel compelled to undergo.

Just long hair, simply and attractively styled, does wonders.

David
