| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/4/2006 4:42:58 PM | "the two names he mentioned could easily have played for a soccer team, given that I'd never heard of them."
That's all the more reason for you to know it wasn't a soccer thread. Surely there's no chance that I could name two soccer goalies who could possibly be the best there ever was without you knowing who I was talking about! I thought you and Pedro were the resident soccer buffs. Guess I gave you too much credit.

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/4/2006 7:54:43 PM | I'd have to say Ron Hextall is up there. He was one of the first to really introduce a goaltender playing the puck in a hockey game.
good stuff.
obviously not the best of all time but worth a mention.

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/4/2006 11:04:55 PM | | A healthy Hasek is the best of all time.. i really hate to say that cause its Hasek and all, but its the truth. | |

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 3/27/2007 9:25:48 PM | Jacques Plante - wherever he played, he made the team better.
Tony Esposito - underrated and one of the nicest guys in sports.
Bernie Parent - amazing clutch goaltender.
Denis Lemieux - couldn't have made Slap Shot without him.

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 3/27/2007 9:37:35 PM | invel: Luongo? The best of ALL TIME???? Let's wait until he wins his first NHL playoff game, or at least until he plays in one. | |
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 3/28/2007 9:30:04 AM | any German could deserve the title of best goalie of all times.
however, i would vote for Oliver Khan or that one who played for the germans of Colonia many years ago when i was a kid.
Mancter,sorry to disagree with you.

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 3/28/2007 5:19:56 PM | I love Saint Patrick he is awesome!! Definatly have to agree who says hes the best!

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 3/28/2007 11:30:10 PM | Arguing over the correct use of goalkeeper, goaltender, goalie, keeper, tender, net minder, blah blah blah.. In any sport that requires a position such a goaltender, they can be referred to as anything, it depends on where you're coming from. Example; soccer/football, football/rugby, etc.
As for the title of the thread, yes it was left very wide open, and I think Vins posting was to be taken with a grain of salt.. you know, not too seriously... don't get your panties so twisted.
But yes, I agree that Kahn and Schmeichel are a couple of the best, and I'd say David Seamen is an honorable mention.
Roy, Brodeur, Belfour (prior to the last 4 or 5 years), Hasek, even guys like Vernon, Hrudey, they all had some great moments.
Current day, I'd say that Luongo is the best in the league, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a Canucks fan. The fact the Canucks are where they are now, and mostly due to Luongos play, and given where people predicted they were supposed to be at the beginning of season, speaks volumes. If Luongo has been on just about any team other than Florida, and the short time he was with the Islanders, I'm sure he'd be held in a much more high regard.

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 3/29/2007 8:18:13 PM | My vote goes to Patrick Roy. As much as I don't like his character, he won Stanley Cups with Montreal in 1986 and 1993 with teams that had no business winning the Stanley Cup. In both of those seasons, he stole the playoffs.
For those who like to argue for Martin Brodeur, he has been a great goaltender, however he has been the benefactor of a great defense and a stingy defensive system. I don't think he would've won three Stanley Cups in nine seasons without Stevens and Niedermeyer in front of him.
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 3/29/2007 8:38:58 PM | In hockey, Patrick Roy is considered the best goaltender of all time. Valdislav Tretiak is my favorite. In soccer, it's really hard to tell. My most favorite keepers are Claudio Taffarel (Brazil), Javier Goicoechea (Argentina, 1990), Iker Casillas (Spain), Bodo Illgner (Germany), Jean-Marie Pfaff (Belgium). Lev Yashin could be considered the best goalie of all time but he's in the same category as Pele, that is the players who performed a long time ago. | |

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 3/29/2007 11:59:37 PM | Patrick Roy, no doubt about it. This is a guy that showed up to play every single night. If he had a bad night, he'd rip himself apart over it. For a number of years, the Canadiens defense was not up to par, and Patrick was the only thing that kept them in the game.
He was one of those exceptional players that demanded a lot, but also did the same for himself. Just look at his recent decision to get involved in junior hockey. He's a "superstar", with a legendary record.
Records Most NHL games played by a goaltender (1029) Most NHL wins (551) Most NHL playoff games played by a goaltender (247) Most NHL playoff wins by a goaltender (151) Most Conn Smythe Trophy wins (3) Most minutes played in the Goaltender position in the NHL (75444)
"Last season, after they asked the Colorado Avalanche for sticks from Patrick Roy and Peter Forsberg to use at a charity auction, the Mighty Ducks thought they had gleaned some inside information that might help them win a game. When the Ducks got Roy's stick, they noticed it had an illegal curve. Using that knowledge the next time they played the Avalanche, they contested Roy's stick late in the game, figuring they could get a power play when the referee measured the stick and found it to be illegal. But, lo and behold, the stick was legal. It turns out all of Roy's sticks are illegal when they come from the manufacturer, but he reshapes them to make them legal." (The Sporting News Hockey Yearbook 1996-97, p. 16)
You'll find him riding on the team bus, and unloading equipment. Lately, he even got involved in a "fight" when the home team they were playing had it's fans threaten his players outside the arena.
That speaks of what drives the man.
Dryden was great, as well. He did however have an exceptional defensive team in front of him. The only reason he was able to be that calm, and lean on that stick, was because the puck was typically far more often on the opposing team's side of the rink.

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 3/31/2007 7:04:44 AM | | Just watching the Portsmith/Fullham match this morning, another goalkeeper I never thought to mention is David James. That guy has been around forever. Nothing too spectacular, but he was pretty good back in the day. | |
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 3/31/2007 4:56:09 PM | | Brodeur, when he retires he'll have the title... he's just too good not to. | |
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 4/3/2007 11:27:07 AM | I said this in the hockey thread but more fitting here... People who say that the Devils had a better defence or a little misguided... when you break down the average shots each goalie faced over their careers to date or in the past, it shows that Broduer faced more shots than Roy... a worse defence will give up more shots...
Broduer all the way!
Roy vs. Broduer
I took a look at the stats between Roy and Broduer, and they go like this...
Roy
20 Seasons played 1029 career games 551 wins 2.54 career GAA 66 career shutouts 28353 career shots on goal (SOG)
Broduer
14 Seasons played 874 career games 485 career wins 2.20 career GAA 92 career shutouts 21709 career shots on goal (SOG)
Now, when you do the math a couple of things stand out.. .first off, some were saying that Broduer had the better defence, well infact Broduer on the average faced 1550 SOG a season, and Roy faced an average of 1417 SOG...
Broduer is on pace to shatter Roys records, all of them... but looking at the stats Broduer is only behind in one stat, and that is career wins... now saying that, he has played 6 less seasons than Roy... Broduer is only 66 wins behind Roy as of today... if he plays for 6 more years and averages 11 wins a season he ties Broduer... but Broduer is at 39 wins already this season, he is only getting better as he gets holder, possibly two more seasons and he beats Roy's record with 4 years to spare...
In my books, Broduer is arguably the best goalie of all time, barring injury...
When you do the math | |

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 4/4/2007 6:31:22 AM | Well, there is only one 'goalie' worth mentioning in football terms......hands down the great dane Peter Schmeichel.....
NHL??
Er.....That fat kid off that movie about those fat kids that were crap at hockey only they got in that short-arse actor guy to help 'em out....Tom Cruise.......and then they were great and then Tom saved everybody from invading martians who were threatening to destroy the earth...(New York).....

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 4/4/2007 8:15:22 AM | "Billy Smith -NY Islanders 4 Stanley Cups need I say more"
If that's your only measuring stick, Smith can't be regarded as the best. He would fall behind Ken Dryden (6), Jaques Plante (5 consecutive), Turk Broda (5) Grant Fuhr (5 rings) and likely some others I've missed.
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 4/4/2007 11:31:46 AM | | Peter Schmeichel may have been a good goalkepper but Oliver Khan is quite better, in fact he has been the greatest for the last 10 years | |
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 4/4/2007 5:21:43 PM | As for my pick for best hockey goalie of all time, I'll look at the stats and go with George Hainsworth. Any man that can get 22 shut-outs in 44 games must have been good. | |
