| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/4/2006 10:13:29 PM | #1 - I'm pretty sure you can't be forced to work sunday for religious reasons, although I am sure it happens
This is quite true.....you cannot be forced to work on sunday for religous reasons....ever....period. I know because I have not worked a sunday in over 5 years...my religion...the NFL. If you don't want to work on Sunday....there are plenty of ways to get out of it...but saying no to sunday shopping as a whole is as foolish as it gets.
I doubt we will see the days when the damage we have done becomes more apparant.
Damage??!!?? are you serious....we're talking about shopping and you think this small, insignifigant matter is somehow going to affect future generations of sunday shoppers? Save the dramatics please.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/5/2006 12:08:38 AM | I'm excited for it. I have two part time desk associates who will be VERY happy to hear they can get another shift. I would work it no problem to get a Tuesday off. I would take a tuesday/wednesday off over a saturday/sunday in an instant. It will also allow me to hire a new stylist, which is fab.
I spent alot of time in Vancouver, and sundays still felt like sundays. Nobody was hectic, even in the mall it was relaxed, lots of people but less rushing around. I liked it. Maybe now that we have followed what is a normal trend in other provinces/countries we will find more fishies in our sea! Im ok with that, haha!

we voted "NO" and no , meant NO Actually, if you look at the numbers by municipality, HRM voted yes. The whole vote is irrelevant anyway, since a plebiscite is NOT legally binding, it's a public opinion poll. The government did not choose to ignore the vote, they listened to the Supreme Court ruling that the law forcing retail business to close is discriminatory and unconstitutional.
What you people should be arguing about at this point isn't whether or not the government chose to ignore the not legally binding plebiscite, but whether or not the Supreme Court has the right to abolish a law.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/5/2006 6:37:36 AM | I agree with both Tia and Paige in that it was discriminatory towards certain companies such as Superstore and Sobeys, yet allowed places like Pete's to remain open. I still disagree with the whole thing solely based on the wishes of the majority (tho I would not be in that majority). As Jason said on Breakfast Television this mornin' I'm just glad it's over, there's far more important issues to look after... and leafs... since this is a democracy it is ok to disagree even though we all have the right to voice our opinions. As far as the courts go....more time should be spent examining our legal system. As rooster said about shopping and getting with the times, our legal system needs to be revamped for that very purpose. Major issues should include...youth crimes and penalties, legal age of consent and drug laws just to name a few. My question now is...what does everyone think about Sunday shopping being totally blown open. Any store that wants to open will be allowed to operate and the only day that will be mandatory shutdown will be remembrance day. | |

Any store that wants to open will be allowed to operate and the only day that will be mandatory shutdown will be remembrance day. I think they should be shut down for the statutory holidays, same as they always were. If not all of them, they should definitely be closed on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday, as well as New Year's Day. Two very important "family" days and one very very important recovery day. Other than that, I couldn't care less. I'll probably never go shopping on a Sunday anyway. Football is on all day, and there isn't much that will drag me away from the NFL games. Of course, outside of football season, I might hit the stores if I need something.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/5/2006 10:51:32 AM | you can say bye bye to good ol flea markets too little corn stores take a hit so your massive sobeys and superstore can get richer. personally I don't feel it's a step into future I think it's one giant step back for mankind. | |
|
| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/5/2006 1:08:44 PM | I think grocery stores were a good idea. The rest I was neutral on, or didn't care less. I think a slow- down day with your family is a good idea, now you can do it buying groceries and cooking a meal. But I hope everyone takes some time to slow down.
Wal Mart and other big shops I'm not so happy about being open more. They already kill small businesses.
It will be nice for more small businesses to open 7 days week in summer for tourists which should be profitable.

i was happy about that. IMO remembrance day is the most important day of the year to remember all of the people who died to give us the democracy we have, along with all of the Canadian Forces who have served and continue to serve our country. I think it is a day of respect. The others are just christian holidays.
i grew up in a family where my dad worked for a company which provided overseas communications for Canada. At one point when i was young, he worked in the technical side of making sure the phones worked for people calling their overseas family. Usually the busiest days were christmas and the major christian holidays. He and his coworkers often spent xmas and other holidays working and we made family time at other times when that happened. i also worked a lot of xmases and sundays when i was in school and recently out because it was required in the jobs i had.
Canadian Forces members have to work on holidays, go away for 6 months or more at a time and miss family birthdays, holidays etc. So do hospital and even some retail workers before the current changes took place.
i think people can make family time, as long as they want to.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/5/2006 2:09:39 PM | ^^^ agreed and good point. I had a dad who was in the navy. There was always that fear there growing up that something would happen. But if it did, I knew it was because he was trying to do the right thing which gave me some comfort.
Despite him being gone for MONTHS at a time. He still took us camping whenever he could and whether it was Sunday or not really wasn't a factor. We would go through the week quite often if he had that time off instead.
So the roads are a bit more crowded. Is it so important that you get to drive without traffic for one day that you are willing to sacrifice the conveniences and benefits this causes for so many people?

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/5/2006 2:20:51 PM | Credit + Consumption = Debt
Nova Scotians + Sunday shopping = further debt.
There is a wonderful book out there " Slow Down", great read.
|
| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/5/2006 2:38:12 PM | Well that smells of propaganda...So I take it everywhere else that has sunday shoping there are people out there racking up their credit cards into an insurmountable debt? Riiiight, Well if thats the case perhaps shopping should be banned on Friday, Saturday and Sunday so as to eliminate people buying things and digging themselves futher into debt.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/5/2006 3:02:18 PM | | Yeah, I'm not sure if I buy that theory either. Isn't Nova Scotia one of the worst provinces for personal debt? We are more in debt here than almost anywhere else in Canada. So, if we had no Sunday shopping and they did, why would we be more in debt? | |
