| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/5/2006 9:03:58 PM | | something I've never quite gotten...(and if its been covered already forgive my repetition) but - for those crying (and i use the term loosely) about not being able to buy groceries during the week (at least in metro) are you people oblivious to 24hr grocery stores? or are you just that lazy? (because waiting till sunday is just as lazy ...really... when you consider everything) They are open 24hrs which last i checked is an entire day, the purpose being (i imagine) to allow people who do work funny hours to get their groceries as needed. So unless you work 6 days straight at about 12 hrs a day (which i think violates a few labour codes..someone correct me on this please?!) honestly how can you not go to a grocery store spend the 15-20 mins (it doesn't take long as there is never much of a crowd) it takes to get food and leave? | |

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/5/2006 11:15:42 PM | this was something that I always thought as well. "I have no time because little timmy has soccer and sally has band and then timmy has choir and sally has to go out with her friends" So because you and your family does a lot of extra curricular things you have to make us work on sundays? How can you NOT find time to get some froceries? If I can do all of my grocery shopping during my lunch hours at work, then so can anyone, if they can't do it after work or any other time during theI guarantee that anyone who works government "not essential services" that get the weekends off would flip out if they suddenly were told "alright we're working weekends now, saturdays AND sundays." Honestly I don't know how anyone would fight to be able to SHOP on sundays, when grocery stores are open 24 hours and most have other items in them, when having banks opened much longer hours and on weekends would be the best bet. Sorry but me working retail, I can't get to a bank to see anyone at my branch because they don't open until sometime after 9 (10 I think) and most teller's close around 3pm.
So what about the Holiday thing as well? The only day that everyone MUST close is Remembrance day......wtf?? Hello, Christmas?? And don't bother spouting off about the commercial thing about christmas and how it doesn't mean anything to anyone anymore, because you're wrong. It means something to me. I spend it with my boys if I can and my friends/family. I always have, every time, every year. To tell people "oh yeah, you can open that day" well, no.
TG, not all people in retail get paid for every single hour. I'm salary, so I get paid for 40 hours just like you. I already work 50 to 60 hours a week at the lightest of times. Me being a manager will be EXPECTED to do my share of sundays. And I'm a single parent, and when I have my children, that is MY time with them. I do not and will not sacrifice that time for anyone. I work some sundays now, but I am done by noon to spend the rest of the day "resting or cleaning" or actually visiting friends and/or family, because I live close to them. They're not open 24 hours through the week so that I can see them then. I wouldn't have a problem with it so long as it was ONE HUNDRED PERCENT EVEN! clear across the board. Banks, postal, and everything else (sorry Robbie!). Yes I'm going to suck it up because I don't have a choice right now, and I am going to do what is needed of me, when I can.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 2:53:50 AM | i think what some people don't realize is that those of "us" who work in offices or other non-retail jobs often work Sundays when we are told to by our bosses or when other situations require it. my boss can tell me to work whenever she wants me to. If i don't like it i have two choices. 1. suck it up. 2 quit. I think those options are available to anyone. If the people who work retail now, don't want to work Sunday and 'have' to, apply for 'office' jobs, or jobs in the sector which 'don't' have to work Sundays. You'll find out, many do.
i agree with the comments that banks should be open Sundays. hopefully they will someday, although the instant cash society has almost eliminated actual teller positions in banks any day of the week. My bank is open Saturday, which is great, but usually the line up is at the cash machine, not the human, so i can't see that lasting. And I don't see any reason why any business or office cannot open Sunday. A lot do already, including 9-5 weekday jobs.
The bottom line for me is that if people are against Sunday shopping, don't shop. And don't go to Tim's, don't go to rent a movie, don't go to a sports game or concert or movie, don't go out to eat, don't buy gas, don't b!tch if your cell phone service/phone/internet/cable dies and no one is working at tech support to fix it, don't buy smokes at the corner store..... because all of the people who work at those places work Sundays, holidays etc. And none of those are 'essential' services.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 3:56:10 AM | I've said it before, I'll say it again. I feel badly for those who took jobs with the expectation of not having to work on Sundays. It sucks. However, there are a few things that people need to think about for this.
First, any employment contract that I've ever seen, the employer reserves the right to change the employees hours as they feel necessary for the needs of the company.
Second, (and again) WHAT makes retail workers so damned special that they have a LAW saying that they will have one specific day off per week? The rest of the service industry is not protected under the Uniform Day Off act. The rest of the working world doesn't have any law saying they don't have to work on any particular day of the week, why does the retail industry have it? That alone makes the law discriminatory against every employed person NOT in retail.
Third, Sunday shopping is here. The government attempted to abide by its stand that they would not revisit the issue until 2008, the Supreme Court told them they had no choice, the law is discriminatory and must be stricken from the books. Do you expect the government to ignore a ruling by the Supreme Court? Should the Supreme Court have that power? If not, don't whine about Sunday shopping, whine about the absolute power that appears to have been given to the Supreme Court and work to have it changed.
On a personal note, I have never worked in a place where I did not expect to be called in on a Sunday if need be. I worked in a law office where I worked around the clock if necessary, and there were always at least 5 lawyers in the office at all times. Every day of the week, and even overnight if they had the case load to require it. I used to pity the Articling Students. They put in almost as many hours as there were in a week. In a year, it will be shown whether or not Sunday shopping is profitable for the stores, and the bottom line will dictate whether or not they remain open 7 days a week, or adjust their hours to close earlier Monday through Thursday and open for 5 hours on Sunday, or whatever. The bottom line is always the final word on any business, and if they aren't making a profit, you can bet your a$$ they won't stay open on Sundays.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 5:17:27 AM | So tell me where are the people fighting for these people to have a set day off: Wait staff, Truckers, Bar staff, Coffee pushers, Fast Food associates, Newspaper peddlers, Taxi Cab Drivers, Shelf Stockers, Cleaners, Theater Staff, Corner Store employees, Call Center workers, the list goes on. Oh I forgot these jobs I've mentioned don't count because their not elite members fo the retail industry and as not being part of said force are over looked and brushed aside. It's nice to see some people want a set day off for certain workers. Basically I see it as the FUCK-YOU /FEND FOR YOURSELF if you don't work retail law. Having the week-end off is a PERK... not a right. That is why you don't see Government officials, Upper management, Owners, or employees who have been on the job for years working week-ends(for the most part). I work anywheres from 6 to 14 days in a row with out a break, and my shifts are 8 to 12 hours in length also I am on a 3 shift rotation which can change from day to day with 8 hours notice. My career is basically a 24/7-365 job. Sure I get holidays off..but only if there isn't a ship in or major repairs needing to be made. Am I complaining...no..and why am I not complaining, because I get paid to work. Work is called work because most people wouldn't do it if they didn't get paid for it.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 5:29:59 AM | Sorry, I agree with the last posts. My point is that I work Sundays, I work evenings, I work all nighters, and I work holidays. For instance, I'll be doing work this Sunday, my Thanksgiving holiday will be spent at work and I'm going to forgo my day off on Tuesday, because I have work to do. I have never had a coffee break in about 15 years. I sometimes get to eat lunch at my desk at noon. Sometimes I get it at 3 and sometimes I don't get it at all. I have had a total of 9 vacation days in the last 4 years. When I'm lucky I can get off work at 7. When I'm not its much later. Its great that Sobeys (which I don't like) is open 24 hrs. But when you've just worked 12 hours and are starving because you missed lunch, taking time to get grocery's at midnight on a working night is not such a great option. I might actually like to eat and maybe do something other than shop for my supper. But what about other things. A few weeks ago I couldn't make it to a mall for over a week to get a damn wedding present. I ended up blowing off the wedding, in part because I just didn't have time to do the shopping.
I chose the work that I do and in doing so, chose the hours that I work. It would be so much easier for me to work at a mall or something that has a little more fixed schedule. Where at the end of the day you can actually go home instead of piling your car with paperwork so you can work when you get home. But I chose my job, as others chose theirs. Now, as for being made to work Sundays when you didn't before...isn't that part of the law? That you can't be made? Thats what the Dept of Labour is for, they will be looking for people being forced and will take action against it.
My point about not spending time with the family on Sundays was general..and I said that. I know there are lots of people who spend their time with their kids on that day. But not everyone has kids, not everyone spends it with their kids...and yet, they are the ones crying about the family day. Those comments were aimed at them. Not the legitimate people who want the family time.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 5:33:04 AM | There is a laid back , wonderful salt air feeling, I get from living in NS, we are friendly and relaxed. I just think we sold a bit of ourselves here. There was nothing wrong with being the only Province not shopping on Sunday. Trust me, we were the ones to be envied. but we live in a keep up with the Jones society , so lets all be the same. Congrats!!!! Now your like everyone else. | |

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 5:41:42 AM | | I think this will be my last post on Sunday Shopping. The yes and no sides seem to be miles apart and no one really seems all that interested in seeing the others points. I think its a little sad though that one of the most debated threads is about Sunday shopping. The only thing I can say is that for the retail workers who don't want to work you should call the Department of Labour Standards and ask them your rights. If they say you can't be forced to work, then don't. Stand up to your employer and don't let them get away with shit. They can't fire you, cut your hours or force you to do it if its against the law. If they do...you will have to find a job working for someone better and you'll get a nice little settlement from the company who went against the law. | |
|
| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 8:05:07 AM | | Well I've talked to some retail managers and they are scrambling to get enough employees to fill slots and it isn't looking good. As I said before, there are not enough people or students willing to work. Also expect your taxes to go up to compensate Metro Transit who will have to adjust their schedules, hire more staff, the police depaqrtment, etc. | |
|
| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 8:33:40 AM | ^^ so basically you are complaining about jobs being created in an economically challenged province.
The revenue generated by tourists on Sunday and also the general population will have benefits to the entire area. Tourists coming to town on the weekend, did not shop on Sundays. Actually, many are suprised and deterred because they figured they could.
This also means an increase in tax revenue. If our government tries to put up taxes based on Sunday shopping then someone needs to look at why and make sure its just not another excuse and short-sighted money grab that continues to drive NS's away to other provinces.
Metro transit will not put on more busses unless there are the people to justify it. That means, increased revenue for them which should cover their costs. If our infrastructure is so poor that things like metro transit can not be self-sustaining, then there is a resource management issue going on. They may try to blame Sunday shopping but as anyone who takes the bus will tell you, Metro Transit services have been going down hill for years now without the help of Sunday shopping.
As for hiring more police? Well considering we have the highest crime rate per capita in Canada. Is that a bad thing?

There was nothing wrong with being the only Province not shopping on Sunday.
Once again you are forgetting PEI does NOT have Sunday shopping except for the 6 weeks before Christmas. One more thing, I am not for or against it, but will say to those who say that retail isn't anymore special than anyone else. I don't think anyone has said that, and give people more credit than that. The point is the people that work retail were NOT working Sundays when first hired. The rest of society that has had to work previous Sundays knew that Sunday work was part of their job upon hire!

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 10:24:57 AM | Holy sweet jesus, typed something and then when i went to post it didn't work.......
So once again
The points are all well taken. But to me, it seems the ones affected by the decision, say no. The ones that are not affected by the decision say, yes!
I for one care less, cause i don't work for anybody.
The question is though........
Can you see through your own thoughts, your own situation to make decisions based on solutions and not biased beliefs.
Regardless of your own predicament. People will be affected by this decision.
Truly if people wanted to find solutions they can.
If everyone called their local counsillor and voiced an opinion on this matter than legislation could and should be enacted to protect the rights of people in our community.
If you had a fulltime job before this decision, then the labour laws should be enacted in the sense that no one could force you to work on sundays if you didn't prior to the decision.
If you are entering the workforce after the decision was handed down by the courts then you would not be grandfathered by this ruling.
A simple solution could easily fix the problem. People have built there lives around a certain lifestyle. Regardless of what i believe people should be protected and can be.
So if you want solutions for everyone than make a call.
what a model we would be for the rest of the country if we protected instead of just legislating.
Don't give me, well theyll find a way to fire you if you don't work answers. If your smart no one can fire you in Nova Scotia unless you steal or are guilty of a good enough reason for dismissal. you don't need a Union to protect your rights, they are already in place in legislation.
Decisions such as these will be talked about in chambers and its important that a simple solution be found.
|
| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 10:27:57 AM | Well NS's have believed a lot of things over the years. We are in a population decline, we NEED to adapt or our economy will completely crash.
NS's wanting to "preserve and protect" their way of life are saying they simply won't accept change. Change is necessary in any society to evolve and prosper. We aren't changing, we are not prospering because of it.
We have mass migration going on of people leaving this province to search for work. We'd have more people here to fill these jobs if we weren't so bent on preserving and protecting.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 2:33:53 PM | Sunday shopping???? I don't work retail, but I put in my overtime hours, including Sundays. If you don't want to go shopping on Sunday, don't! If you want to go, do! Simple, really. | |
|
| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 2:39:08 PM | Ok so again I ask for having not recieved an answer yet...why should it be only retail workers who have a set day off given to them in the form of a law..can anyone give valid reasons for this.

| GOV'T JUST APPROVED SUNDAY SHOPPING!!!!! Posted: 10/6/2006 2:47:07 PM | Really Tim, I don't know???? I work my share of Sundays. The original theory about not working Sundays was because of religion, but society isn't that religious now. I like the idea of Sunday shopping cause I may not have time in the evenings to do my shopping, so Sunday may be the only day to do it.
Just my 2 cents worth. | |
