Once again you are forgetting PEI does NOT have Sunday shopping except for the 6 weeks before Christmas

It will as of this fall from what they are now saying on the news.

Going shopping where? Walmart? Most stores at the malls aren't even opening until the 22nd. And will be closing early on Saturdays.

I've worked Sundays for 13 years 12 hour shifts, loved it. now, I work mon-fri 8 hour shifts cant' stand it. I had no say, the needs for job just required the change in scheduling. I adjusted. there will be some that prefer the change, others won't. But we shall all adjust.

So, how did the first entirely legal day of Sunday shopping go for everyone? Moi?, I spent most of the day in bed licking my wounds from the Hat tourney. :) beer is such a good killer of pain. Must be in some home remedy book. lol.

I went to the theatre on Sunday.
Didn't even go near a store.
Sunday Shopping had absolutely no impact on my "family time".

Slept all day then had a friend pop over to watch TV in the evening. Worked a bit on Monday though..blah.

My sister worked Sunday though, wasn't fabulous but she's actually happy to get Wednesday off this week. Her daughter will be in school and she will get some me time which is very rare for her considering she usually has Sundays off.

It's football season. Need I say more? When football season is over, if I need something on Sunday, I'll go get it. Otherwise, Sunday will be spent the same way it always is. Football season is different. Good luck getting me away from the TV, especially during the Patriots' game!

Well looks like the chain reaction from Sunday shopping is already in motion. The only holiday the worker gets now is Rememberance Day. I say wow, how many people are gonna being working on Christmas ? Like I said before , the workers have no rights. This matter wasnt voted on but forced upon and I pity those who this will affect. I say this puts us back into the dark ages. To those who support Sunday Shopping , I bet you dont like it now, maybe you will work on Christmas and earn a few extea bucks. The ball rolls on, I wonder whats next ? I know I`ll be home watching hockey like I do every year. Cheers and merry Christmas.

Not to sure about that. A number of the Holidays are Statutory Holidays which are not controlled by the Province. I believe those are Federal holidays. Remembrance Day, which befuddles me, is not a Statutory Holiday.
I worked for a major frozen food processor in northern NB and we never had Rememberance Day off.

It just sounds like the Province could control whether or not Remembrance Day would be a holiday province wide.

I think it's a shame that these stores are going to be open on Sundays...
This was one of the best things N.S. has been able to keep a day for most to not work, enjoy family etc.
This only opens the door to the RAT RACE the rest of the country already deals with....

Huh. I seem to recall voting on this a year or so ago, and it was voted down. I don't recall the call being made since to vote on this again.
I'm not all "hurrr, sunday shopping is evil" infact, I don't really care either way, but what bugs me is that people voted for something, and then the government turned around and did the opposite later on anyways, WITHOUT another vote on the matter.

Is this a democracy or a dictatorship?
"Big corporations need their money, so **** the voters!"

I work sundays anyways. I don't work in retail, I work on a farm for part of the year, and for a christmas tree company another chunk of the year. We don't stop for sunday anyways.

As for "we arent amish" and "time to get with the times" and whatever else, you folks need to keep in mind. NS and atlantic canada were settled by alot of very religious folks. Religion to this day is a strong factor in many things. And alot of the religions around here consider sunday to be a holy day, which was the cause for the majority of the "Against" sunday shopping. This is a day and age where we're supposed to be respectful of other cultures, so it's pretty bad to tell someone that their beliefs are wrong. Religion, be it christian, buddist, or many of the others, is important to it's followers.

Well, I'm religious, Christian...and while traditionally Sunday has been "Holy Day" things have changed a bit. Our religious leaders themselves work most on Sundays, and also...being Christian is a lifestyle, something that should be practiced everyday, not just sundays.

As for telling someone their beliefs are wrong...is it not also wrong to tell someone they cannot open their store because of what someone else believes in? Also I think ur being a tad harsh on the government, they did try to fight it, but they lost in court...(though that was most likely the master plan so as to not piss anyone off too much :P)

thing is, like I said, they had us vote on it the first time. But what changed that they decided the voting was a step to skip this time around?

This was in the Chronicle Herald today about the new Code protecting workers who didn't usually work on Sundays. Also, I've included the email address so people can voice their opinions on working holidays.

That bill made changes to the Labour Standards Code and was aimed at workers in stores that traditionally didn’t open on Sundays. Those workers can refuse to work on Sundays and statutory holidays as long as they provide their employer with seven days’ notice. The legislation said employers of these workers can’t alter their hours if they refuse to work these days.

Mr. Parent said his goal is to make sure workers are aware of the bill and their rights.

"Please phone me, phone the department, we will keep your name confidential until such a time as you give us permission to speak to your employer. At least phone us so we can tell you what your rights are and tell you what the bill does," he said.

Interim Liberal leader Michel Samson said Wednesday his party wants to hear from as many people as possible about whether they believe stores should be open on holidays and if they think store hours should be limited on Sundays. He is encouraging them to phone the caucus office toll-free at 1-877-778-1917 or via e-mail at lco@gov.ns.ca.

Gotta love flip-flop and hypocracy. The Tories flip-flop and the Opposition parties are now using the same arguments for closing on holidays as the proponents against Sunday shopping, ie family time and the people should be consulted and a vote. Well folks the genie is out of the bottle so enjoy your higher taxes along with your holiday and Sunday shopping.

The reason that Rememberance Day can't be touched is it is a separate federal law.

Ok, so I understand people are upset because they "voted" against it. It was a plebiscite, not a binding vote...basically, an opinion poll. But obviously, legally, the government could not prevent stores from opening, it became an issue of all or nothing. They could have just left it at the ruling that Sobeys and Superstore could open, but then you'd have company after company going through the same process, it would be a never ending thing, and the government really has better things to do with time and resources than fight what has become a losing battle.

I think they decided to let everything open on Sundays so as to not waste tax payers dollars trying to fight other retail stores from opening. I think it was the most efficient move made by a government. And really though why could some open and not others. No one I think has yet to explain why retail workers need a set day off yet the rest of us have to work on sundays as par for the course.
