I started off with a 1 week vacation by myself in the US. My second trip was to London for 2 weeks. I ended up moving there some months later because I loved it so much. As many other posters have confirmed, you do not have to be alone the entire time if you so choose it. You are likely to meet many people along the way.
I highly recommend it. I don't travel alone now simply because am a mother now, but its a part of my life that has certainly shaped who I am today.

| Travelling Alone Posted: 4/20/2007 7:26:52 PM | | I travelled to Kauai alone last summer and it was the most amazing experience. I prepared well that each day I had a plan and got the most out of the island. Heli tour, snuba, catamaran tour, snorkeling, hiking, mai tai drinking... Evey moment is yours, what ever, when ever. In fact, I am going back this year, on my own. I am shy to just talk to someone I don't know, so travelling on my own threw me out of my comfort zone, although uncomfortable at times, it was good for me. I bet I met more people travelling alone than I would have if I was travelling with someone. | |

| Travelling Alone Posted: 4/27/2007 5:08:30 PM | i guess i can't say much in that aspect. i usually travel alone to mn to visit friends, put up posters, or travel alone to the airshows/carshows alone because i invite people & they usually go out drinking the night before so they are too hung over to go, disappointed really, so i go alone. this year i'm going with someone to one show. within the last 5yrs i've gone to concerts with some friends but don't do that anymore because they moved. | |

I really want to travel somewhere but i'm having a hard time finding someone to go with. I'm hoping to do something different, i don't want to lay on a beach and get a sunburn, i want to do something like, explore the amazon, hike the Grand Canyon, maybe climb Mt. St. Helens or go to the first camp on Everest. I'm just not sure how to do a trip like this alone...
Anyone who has done any travelling alone, I would really like to hear from you!! Thanks guys!!
I alway travel alone. I love the sheer freedom it gives and you always meet plenty of other lone travellers along the way. You're often far more open to approaches by locals as well.
Buy a Lonely Planet guidebook to where you want to go and you'll hook into the traveller scene easily. have fun!

| Travelling Alone Posted: 5/10/2007 12:43:07 AM | I agree.... I travel alone all the time and its awesome.. You are more apt to meet the locals and make friends.
I frequently go to the South Pacific and have never felt any danger or adverse conditions.
I think you should get on the net and find out what you can before hand and then when you arrive talk to locals who can give you good advise on tours, restuarants, hotels and much more.
Have fun and keep traveling !!
Cheers !! | |

| Travelling Alone Posted: 5/13/2007 9:45:02 AM | Hi,
I did a Nile cruise in Upper and Lower Egypt a few years ago on my own although admittedly it was kinda with a company called Solo's - I suppose I wasn't strictly travelling on my own.
I am however this summer as im going to South Africa and diving with Great White sharks !! AWEEEESOMEEEEEEEEEEE
Safety in South Africa is a big issue but as long as you have your common sense about you, dont walk around quiet areas, and preferably dont stay out late on your own, you'll be fine !

| Travelling Alone Posted: 5/16/2007 11:57:44 AM | At 21 I've travelled a few places already by myself. January 06 I went out to St. John's, NFLD for 7 weeks by myself, and then I went to San Antonio, Texas last July. I figured if i wait for someone to agree to come, i'll be old and grey. Since September 06 I have also travelled almost 10 000 km's all by myself. It feels good to know I am not dependant on someone else. | |
