I see a few sides to this. Yes, tasers are proving to be pretty deadly, but, I'd chose to take my chances on a "zap" than with a bullet. But then, I do not commit crimes and am never intoxicated or strung out on drugs, and am no "threat" to a police officer, so I don't really really worry about it much.

The person's adrenaline and heart rate surely is a factor in the effects of the tasers. Also, the cops' adrenaline and heart rates are racing ... which may cause them to make some bad choices or get "carried away". We have to remember that cops are only human too ...

My guess is that we will see a great increase in police brutality and trigger-happy cops in the years to come. The sad part is that we can't really blame them ... when they live their lives never knowing what day some crackhead, gang member, or any person is gonna shoot or run them down.

I've noticed that they are really trying hard to recruit now, but what sane person really wants to be a cop anymore? My guess is the force will eventually consist of testosterone - pumpin', wreckless young men ... with the same criteria as bullriders - "all balls and no brains" (just a saying...no offence to bullriders), cops that don't really give a sh1t about law and order, the percentage who will be bought off (or scared "crooked") by gangs, and the odd fool who just wants to serve and protect.

But, getting back on track ... in most cases the taser is likely necessary, and if a person insists on challenging/fighting/running from the cops, they are also choosing to take the risk of having (severe) consequences. It may (or may not) be less fatal than a bullet ...

Alberta Taser death can’t totally be blamed on excited delirium: Inquiry

RED DEER, Alta — An inquiry into an Alberta man who died after RCMP zapped him three times with a Taser says his death can’t be conclusively blamed on a condition called excited delirium.

Jason Doan of Red Deer died in a coma in hospital on Aug. 30, 2006, three weeks after he was subdued by Mounties for smashing windows.

In her report, Judge Monica Bast says the electronic stun gun did not cause Doan, 28, to go into cardiac arrest.

Bast says the most likely cause of his heart stopping was excited delirium, which was the official cause noted on his death certificate.

But she says the exact cause of his death can’t be determined because of lack of medical proof.

Earlier this year, RCMP removed from its manuals the words excited delirium — a term for unexplained deaths involving police that has been panned by medical associations and civil libertarians.

INAPPROPRIATE USE

In a previously unreported provincial court decision stemming from earlier this year, Calgary Judge Bruce Fraser spoke out against the inappropriate use of Tasers.

Taser inquiry delayed to Sept. after explosive email suggests officers lied

Finally spoke to Wayne and he indicated that the members did not articulate that they saw the symptoms of excited delirium, but instead had discussed the response en route and decided that if he did not comply that they would go to CEW.”

Where was he running to exactly? I mean honestly, we are on video hundreds of times a day, and most of us are known, and it is not like the person can go to far. Sometimes the police enforcement in an attempt to get people to comply can actually escalate. Now if he has a macheti, fine, shoot him in the leg.

See I am not a proponent of tasers. First I think if it reaches that stage, then shoot the guy. And on those nice little targets they use, train them to hit a leg, or an arm, and it can be done, I one point I have shot small twigs from hundreds of feet, they sure as heck can shoot a guys in the leg. And if it is too big of a bullet, give them a 22 or something.

Yet these tasers become a lazy weapon designed to keep people in line, and now it is used like in the US to put down students in Universities who are simply asking questions as any student might of visiting politicians such a Kerry, but gets tazed. These weapons have little to do with threats and more to do with controlling people in a ever widening net.

I WILL DO ANYTHING YOU WANT BRO JUST DON'T TAZE ME

No, take the little toys away, and get *a few* of the problem officials to lose weight so they can run with the gear on. And tell them, shoot a person, and it had better be worthy of shooting them, and if you can't hit their leg first and bring them down, or slow them down, then pack your bags and get a new job.

And what ever happened to those batons anyway. Those things properly thrown can bring down almost any man.

The baton was replaced by a retractable metal baton. On the plus side, the damage done with a metal one is greater and it has better stopping power. On the downside they are not very good as restraining devises, can't be thrown effectively and the damage done when hitting someone is greater.

The new metal batons are too widely available and poorly trained transit cops and security guards are allowed to use them. I have seen how some of those transit cops act in Calgary they need lessons in dealing with the public.

I am glad transit cops and security guards don't have tasers. Police officers are at least decently trained and pass pychological testing. Transit cops are not screened as well and security guards not at all. We don't need untrained, unskilled people using tasers.

"I am glad transit cops and security guards don't have tasers."
Me too!

"Police officers are at least decently trained and pass pychological testing."
Yet I have no idea how SOME pass the psych test. Born liars?

" Transit cops are not screened as well and security guards not at all. We don't need untrained, unskilled people using tasers."
I'll second that!

The bottom line is that ANY cop who isn't a desk jockey ought to have to requalify, including a physical endurance test before being let out on patrol. The taser has become the lazy cops way out of the grunt work in too many cases. I don't know who to blame more, Timmies or the taser?

RCMP shouldn't investigate itself in serious cases: watchdog

OTTAWA - The RCMP watchdog says the Mounties should not investigate their own members in the most serious cases - especially when someone has died - due to conflict of interest.

"More serious is that no one can tell you how many members have been investigated for serious injury, sexual assault or death nor can they identify how many charges have been laid against their members nor what the outcome was."

Yup, good shot alright. (wee bit of a low blow maybe but I can live with that, all things considered)

An interesting, recent, brief update/read related to Dziekanski's death is "my rcmp mea culpa". Sounds like the pot's coming to a boil PDQ.
