| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 3/27/2008 8:15:20 PM | IMHO, I think that the problem with Kelowna is that it's full of ignorant hicks who think that a bit of money makes up for being ignorant hicks. There are other socio-economic factors to this discussion but that's another thread in itself. For the most part, people here can only "look" tough, so it's still a very safe place to live, compared to the rest of B.C, anyway. It's all part of the "boom town" mentality, I think. Big money, big egos, gold diggers and penis envy.
I've been living here, off and on, for a while now. I'll admit, this town has grown on me. The summers are nice, and it's not nearly as big of a rat race as Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto etc. However, I'm almost thirty. So, I think I'll have to start changing my lifestyle in order to fit in, here. And by that, I mean a new corvette and a seventeen year old girlfriend. I dunno, it just seems like the hip thing to do, around here

Geez is it really that bad??? I was thinking of asking to be transferred up to Kelowna--had my fill of city life,I grew up in a small town called Barriere--40 miles North of Kamloops, but not ready to be back in a Town that small right now, & thought Kelowna might be ideal as very close to friends & relations?? BUT now what I'm hearing...not sure...lol I heard Westbank is nice?
Geez more to think about now!!!

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 7/2/2008 12:46:49 PM | Having lived coast to coast I have to say that K-town is the coldest rudest city outside of Montreal, and that says alot. It is also the most money oriented place except for Calgary and Toronto in my observation. People here don't like outsiders, they can't stand the rich Albertans and Vancouverites that pump millions into their local economy each year. They don't like all the out of town labour that comes in to fuel the hosing boom either. You can also forget about meeting a local woman here as well unless you drive a nice truck & have a bank account to match it It's a small town that wants to become a city but is scared of going through the growing pains. So they cancel money making events like wakefest and devote a third of their budget to policing. This of course does not include the cost of the numerous private security firms employed here. For what I ask? To keep a few crackheads downtown in line? The transit system here is a joke so no wonder you have so many idiot drivers on the road. Now I'm sure your asking yourself why in the hell am I here? The answer which will not surprise you I 'm sure is the money of course. | |

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 7/2/2008 8:43:36 PM | | BC is saturated with "bravado." Unlike anywhere else in Canada. I'd like to see some of the posers the OP mentioned move to some American cities to actually see how tough they are. | |

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 7/2/2008 10:52:23 PM | K I read all the negatives and it lets me down a bit cause I’ve been planning on moving here. So is it really that bad or is it just the usual small town shit that everyone ****es about? Like I was seeing this chick in Nelson and it’s a beautiful town but it does have the low lives that stick out. One thing that I did notice is that the druggies/wanna be hippies seemed to stick to themselves. Everyone does tell me that Kamloops is the place to be, what’s the verdict? | |

Kelowna is an awesome place to live, lake, hiking, camping, trails everywhere, and if you own a boat well damn, boat accessible campsites, what are you waiting for?
From your previous posts here I am assuming you are a Tradesman. If in fact you are there is no better place to be, I mean really, houses are being built at $8 to $12 per sq. ft., and there is such a frikken backload right now it will take years to complete, everyplace you build has awesome views, not to mention the wages, ($30plus for a Carpenter), are now mirroring Van.
If your planning on going there check out Lake Shore between westbank and kelowna, great place to live, I know because I lived there for years, and with the westside growing as it is you will rarely have to go into kelowna....maybe the beaches cause really, the best looking women in B.C. can be found everywhere....of course nothing to their inner self.....
Of course there are rude people in every town, city, and back water dive, but really, you will not notice, unless you allow yourself too.
I had to move down to Van for a couple years to further my knowledge, but I am SO ready to move back "Home", nothing compares.

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 7/3/2008 7:44:38 PM | | According to Messanger 37, the problem with Kelowna is that is not Kamloops or something like that. Don't get mad at me. Messanger 37 is your guy. LOL | |

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 7/3/2008 11:28:20 PM | I find it funny that I found this thread...I was just discussing this very topic with another friend of mine.
Kelowna is a beautiful place indeed but it in my experience, a very superficial town with not a lot of diversity or depth. But that is just one man's opinion!

So they cancel money making events like wakefest and devote a third of their budget to policing. Wakefest was great for places like restaurants, pubs, clubs etc. Then after that, they head back to their mo/hotel room and would reek havoc there. In the hotel where I work each year the damage cost was on average of around $2500. I personally would evict on average 3 to 4 rooms per night, as complaints from other guests could not just be swept under the rug. It was supposed to be a sporting competition, and not a free for all, Spring Break mentality. I for one am glad it was canceled. I like to party and have fun as much as the next person, but there are limits!
This of course does not include the cost of the numerous private security firms employed here. For what I ask? To keep a few crackheads downtown in line? A few crack heads????? A FEW?? When I first moved here 5 years ago I was appalled at what was happening in City Park. I recall the first time I went down to the water park with my then 11 year old daughter, there were maybe 6 other kids playing in the water park. It was a Saturday afternoon in the middle of August. We had walked along the lake to the park from downtown, and I made the mistake of walking through the park on the way out. What do I see but crackers, hookers and their dealers/pimps passed out all over the place. Their cell phones plugged into city power outlets, smoking their pipes openly. It was an interesting conversation with my daughter for sure. I worked in the downtown on graveyard shift, and there was a good reason the doors to the hotel were locked after 11pm. Guests complaining about being hit on by dealers, and the crack whores. They needed to boost up the security and policing downtown. You go to party and don't have to deal with all the $hit that goes down after 2:30 in the morning. Or the businesses employee's coming to work in the morning to find these lovely folks passed out in the doorway. Some lying in their own puke or feces. Try going on a ride one weekend night with the cops to get a taste of those FEW crack heads you mention. You are basing your opinion with little true knowledge of what it's really like. Yes Kelowna is going through a huge growing spurt, and the pains of that growth will be reflected for a few more years to come. It really is a beautiful city and area to live in. I do have to agree that it is quite a materialistic city in many ways though. More so then other cities of proportionate size that I've lived.

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 7/8/2008 3:37:16 PM | Just got another job offer, 2nd in the last 3 years to go up to Kelowna. I did my homework with the first offer,,(and that was when prices were almost still reasonable) and now even more I answered with a resounding NO THANK YOU!!!! Too many people having the same idea bee lining up to "paradise" has brought the bad stuff from here to there. That would include over exagerated housing prices.
From what I know and heard they definitely need some "new" blood in the city,,,but that "new blood" is not welcome,,,and if you are,,,you better be ready to pay,,,,one way or the other.

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 7/8/2008 3:49:03 PM | Being rather new to the OK valley, my observations are as follows....
There are many smaller communities that one can tuck themselves away in and still be able to have a fairly easy commute into places like Kelowna for work.
The smaller the community the more cliques you run into, without a doubt
The smaller the community the stronger the community ties
Kelowna is like an ugly swan that discovered it was beautiful one day. Its really become too big for its britches..lol...there seems to be a lot of money floating around there, hence why some would consider it to be superficial/or driven by the almighty buck.
I lived on the coast(lower mainland) for a long time, I have lived in the prairies and southern Ontrario and now I live here in Vernon. I feel as though I have found my middle ground. Although I still may move down the road into a smaller community even yet.
Large cities become faceless after awhile, smaller communities promote recognition of faces. Its really about what you like. If you like to be lost then stay in the big cities, if you like the feeling of being part of a community go smaller.
Either way, there will always be issues in any place you call home at the end of the day

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 7/8/2008 11:57:46 PM | I lived in Kelowna and thought how sad it was that all that beauty covered up so much poverty because of that ugly sin tax that keeps helping the rich get richer and the poor get driven away while the middle class wishes somebody would take the economy off its collective back...
Many of the occupations there have a "status quo" for wages and they don't budge from it. They know very well that no one can afford to live on the lousy wages but they figure if people are willing to suffer hardship just to be around those lakes and mountains, too bad, so sad for them... I knew people working 3 jobs just to live there.. I also knew people that had to sell everything they had to get out of there... It's not even slightly amusing and it happens a LOT! What really surprised me was the amount of women who were enjoying "the life" while their husbands worked somewhere else.. such as Vancouver and came home on weekends.
It may have changed since I was last there but I doubt it... The rich tell city council what to do there and as such, it's the playground of the rich. If you're not, be prepared to watch everyone else go sailing, golfing, biking and hiking while you keep your shoulder to the stone.
You can't eat those mountains!

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 7/19/2008 8:33:28 PM | | How come its so hard for many beautiful woman that arent society's definition of "beauty". Woman that are BBW or on the edge of it, men just dont want to get involved with them. We are wonderful people too, we arent shallow, we are kind, fun loving people too and deserve the same attention that is given to skinny girls and super model types. Its hard for me to get a date in this town, guys in this town are soo picky and or shallow. Im looking for a man that loves me for who I am. Someone close in age not someone really really old but someone in their 20's. Are there any men out there like that? I dont know...I hope so. | |

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 7/20/2008 4:23:41 PM | I dunno, I have been living here for two years and really never noticed any problem. No one has picked a fight with me So, maybe you are hanging around the wrong places. HEY! I JUST POSTED A POF BEACH PARTY PICNIC IN KELOWNA...why don't you come along and meet some of the good ones | |

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 7/20/2008 9:39:26 PM | Kelowna is what you make it.
But you have to look to find all and get in all the activities. The bars for the over 25 crowd is a little light, But that can be over come, Most venues have a bar attached, go see who's there.
If you golf, ski, boat, its all here. I just started rock climbing, hwo wants to join me?
I like the place, and don't like riden my bike in the rain, Ktown is perfect.
Thanks R | |

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 11/18/2008 9:06:10 AM | I love Kelowna! I will never live anywhere else. Born and raised, and I find that people that move away, come back in time when they realize what they are missing. Sure it can be hard to find good true friends, but you must be creative and open to the "new". If you network you can meet many new people, and in no time realize its a small social circle. If your into sports.. That’s a wonderful way to meet great people! Physical/motor sports, winter/summer their is "always" something to do. If your active, its a wonderful place to be. If your social, its a wonderful place to be. If you have money, I'm sure its a paradise!
The problem with the homeless is partly because its a nice climate for the transits and all the fruit picking. If living on the streets in a beautiful place, is better then, moving to a cheaper town and working there, then that’s just a persons priorities. You must help yourself, before other people can help you. It doesn’t help that they gave bas tickets to homeless to get out of Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics.
Not to mention too many gangs in Kelowna now are taking over since the cops have been so harsh on the Hell's Angels who are for the most part, mellow and stay out of the lime light. There is now more harsh gangs that have taken over. You have gang people pulling guns on people down town, and slashings outside the bars.. Its disgusting! I guess you see it all in every big city. I'm happy to stay away from downtown at night.
But I still wouldn’t move away. Kelowna has so much to offer! I just stay away from Down Town Core. I love the lakes and mountains, and living the summer life. I love my friends, and my social circle I have found.. They are many different people with great personalities. Sure, you have the stuck up rich people, young and old. But we live in a paradise with a lot of people with money! It makes it what it is... Try traveling to the States! Canadians are wayy more polite! ;) I LOVE it here!!!! Livin the good life! ;)

| What's the deal with Kelowna? Posted: 11/18/2008 12:03:49 PM | I've lived in the okanagan for 8 years now, and frankly, I really like it.
No, I don't live in Kelowna, lol, though if I could, I think I would, at least on the edges. It's just like any other mid-sized city, different areas have different levels of friendliness, yadda yadda yadda. Plus it's got a ton of growing pains, so I cut it a lot of slack.
I will admit that the social scene in Kelowna, or anywhere in the Okanagan for that matter, is weird. Mostly, you have to join a club, activity or cause if you want to meet people and make friends, because the people here tend to not socialize outside their regular circle of friends. Also, one section of town may be rowdy, while two blocks over they're singing in the pub. It's a very segmented town, and it takes time to learn which areas will fit. And the different areas aren't very geographical, unfortunately. A 'Surrey' bar might be half a block from a 'Kits' restaurant.
I did live in Kamloops for almost 10 years, way back when, lol. Yes, it's friendlier, but it still takes time to make meaningful connections. You tend to get a lot of acquaintances right off the bat, but not a lot of close friends. Just like everywhere, really. Plus, you gotta admit, Kamloops has a lot more 'vocal' crazies, lol, who'll sit themselves down at your table in the cafe for a long cozy chat. It was interesting, living in Kamloops, that's for sure!
