| What browser? The TomCat Prowler. Posted: 7/3/2005 1:44:14 AM | Well, I admit to IE, BUT it isn't really all IE, or, at least the GUI isn't. I use...
The TomCat Prowler Browser www.tomcat.ws/prowler
It's freeware, but still IE at the core, HOWEVER it resists spyware and browser hijackers, and has some great features. Plus, heh heh, we made it. Lotsa people seem to like it, been downloaded almost 100,000 times now already. No odd lookin sites or out of whack settings.
o Pop-Up Blocker o Passworded Faves o Large Webpage Viewing Area o 2-Click Clean of Cache, History & Cookies o Super EZ-2-Use o Easy-2-See SSL Indicator o Works with most all IE plugins o More...
We're about to release our TomCat Instant Messenger, too, which integrates with AOL and MSN. Cat lovers will love it, it purrs when you chat, heh heh.

| What browser? The TomCat Prowler. Posted: 7/3/2005 11:26:21 PM | Ok, I tried it and will give you my review.
Pop-Up Blocker
It works. Kinda... With the PUB enabled, links I clicked on wouldn't load. So, I had to disable it, to get them to work, which kind of negates it's only purpose. Grade: D
Passworded Faves
Storing passwords is standard on any browser, and it worked fine. Some browsers even go out of their way to make passwords a hassle, this one doesn't. Grade: A
Large Webpage Viewing Area
The viewing area is pretty big, especially compared to Opera. Grade: A
2-Click Clean of Cache, History & Cookies
Yes, it is quite easy to clean cookies with this program. However, if you're somewhat accustomed to computers/browsers, you know how to clean your cookies in a few clicks anyway. If you're a newb, you have no idea what cookies are, so no real reason to clean them in the first place. It's not that it's a bad idea, just that it's not something to switch browsers over. Also, I cherish my ability clean specific cookies at my choosing, or all at once, like I can with Opera, which is not possible with TomCat. Grade: C
Super EZ-2-Use
Yes, it is easy to use. But, isn't every browser? Just click on a link, and off you go. I think the difficulty in using some browsers comes with the options that some offer. This program is almost devoid of most options that are now standard on many of the more popular browsers. Grade: D
Easy-2-See SSL Indicator
I didn't go on any secure sites, but I assume it was nice and big, and worked well. Grade: A
Works with most all IE plugins
Yes, I downloaded a gestures program and it worked fine with the TomCat browser. The real question is why would someone download all the plug-ins compatible with IE, and not just use IE with them? Let's be honest, alot of plug-ins for IE are sketchy at best. Finding good ones, downloading them, ****ing around with them to get them to work like you want them takes time and patience. That's why programs such as Opera and Avant are so popular. Alot of it is already built in, and works from the second you fire it up. Grade: B
This is not a "bad" browser. It does what it says for the most part. The pop-up blocker does not work well, however, and that's a no-no nowadays. It is fast, and it is easy to use. If you're a casual internet user (well, I don't know any, but I assume they exist) then you may be happy with this program. For me however, it just came down to a lack of flexibility and customization.

For anyone Linux/Unix user out there who develops php applications on remote servers please try out the fish:// protocal with Kate (or your fav editor) through konqueror it makes life so easily. Its what the all expensive dreamweaver from macromedia does for FREE!

| What browser do you use? Posted: 7/16/2005 10:57:33 PM | Opera, I sing of thee ..... Nothing else is so willing to bend and modify to my browsing habits, as well as suggest useful new habits, yet is so tough on bad actors. I am constantly using the smart page scaling to ease my experience of sites that are in love with maddeningly small typefaces. I also appreciate its small size and lightfooted speed, a natural outcome of development for the tight real estate of mobile devices.
Now and then I still haul out AWeb on the Amiga, which has a few tricks I'd like to see on other platforms.
I've long ago dumped NutScrape and Interject Exploiter after one too many bouts with invasive code and general unfriendly behavior. Firefox seems underpowered and overpromoted out of the box, and gave me flaky behavior. Hot-rodding via extensions would be more alluring if the sources were better consolidated and tested.

| What browser do you use? Posted: 7/20/2005 4:14:44 PM | IE--when I first started going on line.
FX--seems to work ok on some sites, but I have noticed on sites where there is heavy traffic it tends to freeze. Plus, now Mozilla is up to version 1.06 (just checked site). W/so many recent changes, there's something going on!
Have been checking out a few other browsers though...I alternate between several. Now I use IE as a last resort. Intend on checking out a few of the others mentioned.
Thanks for the info. | |

| What browser do you use? Posted: 7/26/2005 8:23:11 AM | I'm using Firefox.
I switched over from IE a couple of months ago after I got really sick of getting my browser hijacked despite all the various software I used to prevent it and because it was just irritating. Tabbed browsing is amazing.
The only thing I dislike about Mozille (and someone please tell me I'm just experiencing a PEBCAK problem...) is that it doesn't seem to store favorites as individual files like IE does but rather stores them in one file, which you can export as an HTML document with links inside it. It makes backing my favorites up a b!tch.

The security on the browser is amazing, kind of buggy but anything beats MicroShaft.. haha

| What browser do you use? Posted: 7/27/2005 6:50:00 PM | Opera.
Most of my friends are devout Firefox advocates and I have no major gripe with FF, but I love Opera. It is slick, full of options, easily configurable, smooth interfaced, and fast.
I first tried Opera a few years back when my windows 98se system was having endless explorer errors and crashes. Just got tired of messing with it and downloaded Opera and Firefox, tried them both, just like the interface in Opera more. Havn't had any major problems with it and have never looked back (except when I visit my bank's website which insists I use IE, It can even tell through the option to make opera ID as IE).
Only problems although minor that I have with Opera are that 1. It does have a banner ad, and while they pick very nonintrusive sedate ads for it usually, it is there and some people might have issues with that. and 2. Occasionally I'll accidently push the 0 key in the number pad and have to correct the magnification, minor problem at worst.

Still using Opera. It won't open play all videos it encounters though, and I have to hit refresh constantly when I'm using the forums. That's the only complaints I have about it.
Opera can auto update. Right click and activate the refresh.. every 30 minutes down to 5 sec. Havent had any problems with video yet.

| What browser do you use? Posted: 8/1/2005 11:42:01 PM | IE Hound here.
Never had any problems with it, runs way smoother and faster than any other Browsers, and the Features on other Browsers are either way too short or require messing with add-ons, plug-ins that often become the subject to other endless trouble-shooting.
Until IE gives me any problems, I will cont. to use it.

| What browser do you use? Posted: 8/8/2005 6:35:49 PM | It depends on what system I'm working on. On my game sys I mainly use Firefox, Opera was having to many issues with some sites. With IE for those damn horrible pages coded only for IE, sorry why run Firefox with an activex plugin??? And I have to say i only use knoq in a pinch for linux boxes firefox or opera is my choice with lynx for quick and dirty access. Now what I do like is bypassing the IE requirement at work by running Firefox off my USB drive oops I should tell that.

| What browser do you use? Posted: 8/13/2005 1:31:57 AM | Switched to Firefox not long ago, along with Thunderbird for email. Only thing I dislike about it, is I can't open a direct url like I could with IE. When you alt-f and want to open a location, it just highlights the address bar, then when you hit enter it's stored up there in the drop down menu. I hate that, as I like to keep just a few there that I access every day. One thing I did like about IE, gave me a box and didn't fill up the drop down menu.
Then again, maybe I've just not found the secret to this yet. :)

| What browser do you use? Posted: 8/13/2005 3:30:51 AM | | I tried firefox 1.0.6 and had no problems. Seemed pretty much the same as IE for speed to me. I just downloaded one called ENIGMA BROWSER. I couldn't find many reviews on it (almost none) but figured I'll give it a try. I've only been using it for about an hour and I think I am going to make it my default browser. I have never seen a browser this fast before. When it installs it carries over all your settings/favorites. I haven't played around much with it but I have to say, the speed is unbelievable compared to IE and FireFox. | |

Features on other Browsers are either way too short or require messing with add-ons, plug-ins that often become the subject to other endless trouble-shooting.
Actually that's what I've noticed too. One day I allowed Firefox to update and then some of the extensions suddenly didn't work anymore and I had to uninstall them and update them too. I never could get quicktime to work on Firefox but it works fine on IE. I suppose Firefox is an Ok backup browser, as is many of the other's out there. Every browser seems to have features I like better then IE and also dislike more. There is no perfect browser. With IE the biggest problem is all the security holes you have to patch. The second is that it integrates itself too much into your operating system and too many other programs and the risk of corrupting something is higher. Some of the problems it's caused I've been able to solve eventually, other's not been able to figure out. Once it took a reformat to get Outlook Express to work again.

| What browser do you use? Posted: 8/13/2005 7:24:57 AM | Well theres Tabbed browsing for firefox which is always a plus, a lower memory footprint, it's ability to handle activex controls and prevent them from installing malicious software on your compiter (a complete seperate thing from the security).
I recommend firefox to everybody I meet I find it a far superior browser and even if the benefits of switching don't state the obvious now it will later on as it's an always ever moving project and can only get better and better.
Did I mention themes? :P
