THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU
I was about to loose my mind with my hompage being hijacked and pop ups and "fake" spyware protection always poping up. I downloaded the Prevx1 and liked it so much I bought a whole years worth. It comes to about 30.00 canadian funds. A small price to pay for such a pain in the ass being taken care of.

Now you should try firefox too like FreshSlate has said.
@DonIn...
Most people dont even know what activex is, I dont how
you can say that most of them only allow it for trusted sites.
Firefox is better, and even in IE7 exploitable bugs have been and are found
for its so far short lifespam. Dont flame FreshSlate for saying what is true.
Ill recommend IE7 when by default it will only allow activeX for trusted sites,
while educating people what should be trusted, and when they make
IE7 PROPERLY interpret most of CSS2. All this is not going to happen
in the foreseeable future, so FireFox is the solution. Im an IT, FreshSlate is an IT
, trust us on this.

About a week ago, close to midnight on POF, a female voice said hello to me (two times, high guality, second or two in between) : freaked me out(hairs on my neck) Then for a week or so, nothing. Last night she said hello again. This has only happened while on POF. I do not use Msn and am forced to use dail-up. I am sure that she is waiting for me to to be in a critical situation before she takes me down. Should I just shoot myself and get it over with?....I use constantly updated Trend Micro PC-cillin security. And furthermore, does this mean that females will allways controll my fate, or do I have a say? Lost!

Ive recently installed the latest version of McAfee's toal protection and cant run Adaware alongside it. But then its got the Anti Spyware on it

couldnt be bothered reading through all the other pages, but a good program if your PC is still running slow, homepage changes etc after using S&D, Adaware etc is HijackThis

run the program without any other windows running, save the log file and you can post it on their forums for someone to check out

The site has got loads of other stuff Malware related

I've been running the new Mozilla Firefox with the Google toolbar add-on, which I'm not sure I like when I'm in POF. If I allow pop-ups, it automatically connects me to the person sending the IM, without the 'yes/no' window first appearing. Is there any way I can fix it or should I be trying something different.

Right now, I've removed Firefox again. Would like to know what my best option is.

you don't have to remove Firefox - it's OK to have both IE and Firefox on the same PC.

What version of Firefox are you using?

Oh, i've reinstalled the newest Firefox (whatever that is...lol). As far as the IM's auto connecting me without the 'Yes/No' window first appearing ...i've given up.

Any suggestions if your running norton......what spyware works well with that?

I have anti spy, but i still have spyware and a trojan on my computer.

Actually, this Firefox 2 crashes on me about once a week, freezes up the computer, I reboot and start over. Then, it starts up without any homepage, just a blank page and sometimes not even that.

I've unistalled and reinstalled it twice now and the same thing is happening. so, I think I'm going to have to find a different browser.

Everything else about it has been wonderful.

Also if you have a hijacker or anoying pop ups, one of the best to use to clean your computer is cwshredder

Its a free download, just goolge it

Virus software does not remove all type of spyware, nor will it protect u

As with most spyware there requires an action from your part.

Dont click anything that you are not sure what it is, is always the simplest rule

Crikey! is this the sort of rubbish you PC users have to put up with?

Get a mac and you won't need to worry about spyware/viruses/trojans again, no more mindless scanning, defragging shortening the lifetime of your drive. Get a computer that works!

I don't know why you guys put yourselves through all this, it's not like windows is better or anything!

Have to agree about Norton. Total crap!
I have downloaded Lavasoft's Adaware for free and have done a direct A?B comparison. Norton has failded three times now and will not get my business and so I am thinking I will purchase the rest of lavasoft's programs which I believe are forever not a yearly charge.

I get these stupid problems also. I get these hideous images and pop ups on my screen , and it says stuff like "you may loose your imformation" or " your profile files may be at risk" or it clams that I visited sites when I didn't and makes all sorts of BS stuff.

I just got this situation fixed like a month ago and now it is back again. This really is irritating.

On my computer it says that certain pics that have poped up have been found on my "internet browsers caches" whatever that means. I never went to these pics and they are sick pics. So everytime I come on the net, those pics show up and I try to ignore them, but I would like to get those pics out.

It did also mention something about a virus or bug.

Again the thing is, I just got this thing fixed about a month ago and now it is creating problems again.

I am just concerned, because I don't know if it is just a virus, or whether or not my computer may have some hacking related activities going on in it.

I mean when you get pics poping up and the computer says that they were found in your browser or files and when you know you didn't go to them, it gets really annoying.

I've been getting links sent to me through msn from friends this weekend that are nasty viruses! The friend isn't actually sending it, it just pops up in a conversation box by itself! Both of them said something that was familiar to me. The first one was jjj.exe and looked like my friend had asked me who this pic of me on the internet. The one today looked like it was a link to my msn space using my hotmail address!

I know we all know not to click on these links without being told by the person that it is ok but I think we often forget that too.

Please be especially careful on msn for the next little while!!

I dunno why everyone has problems.. I have spy-bot, I don't scan with it, I only use the immunize feature, for AV I have Nod32. I run very thorough scans (not with spybot) that will pickup everything and have yet to find a single virus or piece of spyware in over 2 years. I have IE protected using Google Toolbar with popup blocker enabled, and I never install anything with Yahoo or MSN in it's name unless it is followed by Messenger, as only the messengers seem to have adequate security to combat malicious scripts, the toolbars seem to be targets for attacks.

As for the guy who said just use linux, those days will end, same with the mac arguement about viruses, etc. There is little benefit to people creating these scripts and benefiting off them as they are reaching a much larger audience by targeting PC's. As linux is becoming more user friendly, and Mac's becoming more commonplace you will start to see a flood of attacks pointed towards those two systems. Please put your loyalties aside and give up something constructive.

There is no end in sight all we can do is learn to protect ourselves better each time we fail at it.

1. If a piece of anti virus software doesn't catch a virus, discard it, try something new. Otherwise we have a lot of insane people.

2. If your spy ware protection doesn't work, maybe you need to step it up a notch and not be cheap, pay for something that works. Real-time registry scanners do good jobs, a lot of pop-ups live in the registry and if you catch every change that is made, your life is that much easier in the long run.

3.(VERY IMPORTANT) If the guy who is fixing your computer, if that is the case, can't keep it fixed, or keep you updated with new problems, its time to look elsewhere. Again, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing expecting different results.

Most people who give advice just want to feel important, so listen to what everyone has to say but do not think any answer is the end answer, look for yourself... and don't pick the easiest answer you can find, pick the one that makes the most sense after arduous searching.

It is also good to have a spare PC that you specifically keep off the network to keep backups etc on for hairy situations. I can't afford that but maybe you can.

I think I'm going to have to find a different browser.

Try opera.com. It makes the rest look stupid and is still the one the other browsers copy.

I agree about getting a mac instead. If you can and don't play games Windows 98 has none of these problems. You can run it out of the box with no form of "protection" whatsoever and it just runs for years. The problems you folks have are endemic to XP.

Get a mac and you won't need to worry about spyware/viruses/trojans again, no more mindless scanning, defragging shortening the lifetime of your drive. Get a computer that works!

I don't know why you guys put yourselves through all this, it's not like windows is better or anything!.

Why, yes, you're right! Why didn't I think of that! A MAC! OF COURSE!

I'll just run down to the family vault, grab out a gold bar or 2, cash them in, and I should have the money for my new Mac in no time!

Except that I don't have a vault, or any gold bars, or anything of the sort. I am a poor college student who has to make Win XP work on my old computer, cause I don't have a choice.

So that is why I put up with it.

This means I run the Computer Associates Internet Security Suite, AdAware, Spybot S&D, and Windows Defender. I also browse using the DropMyRights add-on that causes my browsers (both IE and Firefox) to boot into a NON-ADMINISTRATOR mode when I load them, even though I am logged onto the OS as an admin. The vast majority of ALL internet-related security issues come from people just blindly running as administrators when they don't need to! DropMyRights really works. When I load a DropMyRights filtered browser, it makes it impossible for my browsers to install ANY software of any kind on my computer, no matter what. I've tested it. I have to close out of the non-admin browser and open it back up in admin mode just to run a Windows Update, or to install the Flash player. Its a hell of a safety feature, since most people don't need their browser to install software 99% of the time. If bad software can't install, it can't infect. Stop the problem at its source.

Also, I have a ton of security extensions running in Firefox (my normal browser, I only use IE in certain special circumstances). Extensions such as NoScript keeps pages from running malicious scripts without permission, and AdBlock Plus with the AdBlock Filter Set.G Updater keeps most ads from loading.

And for those annoying, flickering, dancing ABOMINATIONS known as Flash Animation ads, I use Flashblock, which turns all Flash animations on all sites not given special permissions into "Play" buttons, meaning Flash runs in my browsers only when I say it does.

And for any annoying page elements which manage to make it through this gauntlet of security and blocking software, I have the Nuke Anything Enhanced plug-in, which lets me literally remove ANY element of ANY web page, period.

Its MY computer. I control it. Nobody runs anything on my machine without my permission. My machine’s normal browsing behavior is so locked-down in so many ways that many sites won’t even load properly until I do some adjusting of permissions in various blockers. A little annoying? Maybe. But I also don’t have Spyware problems, either.

Hell, I can’t even remember the last time I actually saw an ad on my computer! I don’t even see ads on web pages. They just don’t load.
