It is true that mac's cost more. It is true you have to buy some software for it. So some poor people are required to stick with microcrap.
But..... In the time it took just to read all the stuff you have to do to keep a windows machine clean..... I could of got a job that would pay for a mac!

I have used Firefox for the last 2 years. And I have the Adblock plus extension. Plus I have Spybot, Adaware and AVG free - + ccleaner - all free. I scan every day. Also, every now and then I do an online scan, plus a scan with cwshredder. I am on the internet every day and I have had no problems. I think that's pretty cool seeing as I don't pay a cent.
A trustworthy site for free downloads is filehippo - also recommended by the gadgetdetective. The latter gives free tech advice - worth a visit to his site!

Forgot to say that I wouldn't touch Norton again. And it's a so and so to get rid of all traces of Symantec on your system.

It makes me chuckle a little bit when people use the freebies and claim they're clean because the freebies say so. Chances are that if you ran an in depth scan using one of the better ranked anti-viruses like F-PROT, Kaspersky or NOD32 that you might well find a few hidden bugs.

I look after lots of PC's and it's what happens in practice, and AVG freeware is total rubbish, insuffficient update frequency and inability to quarantine and disinfect are high on it's list of shortcomings.

You do get what you pay for I'm afraid...

AVG is crap as a anti virus program,it doesn't pick up on virus real time very good,i switched to Avast and found it to be a lot better.Zone alarm is alright but i've found a better firewall-Comodo,not had any problems since making these changes. Also have CC Cleaner and Adaware installed too!

AVAST and AVG are both decent AV programs - especialy for the price. I have used the Pro version of AVG for years at an Enterprise level without a hitch.

Spybot has been the de facto standard for Spyware for years. It works well if you READ the popups and decide :-) That said, may of you will have problems reading the whole popup. Do a search for RESHACK in relation to SpyBot. It will alow you to fix the program visually.

This morning, the keys appear to be being hijacked and other stuff appears. This takes form of IE help box, or IE favourites. Have adaware and spybot but is this something different?

Maisemoo: Mmmm, OK

(1) Is Ad-Aware & spybot the latest versions AND Updated ? The Latest version is 2007, thought if your using 1.06 & whatever's infected your PC my not allow those porgrams to operate
(2) Is your AntiVirus Up-to-date ? & have uyou peromed a complete manual scan
(3) If your not using Firefox, then download it (it's FREE) ~ getfirefox.com. If you go to the same websites that's being infected then you know the problem is directly related to II
(3)Using firefox) Try one more trick, ~ free.grisoft.com for AVG Free, downlaod & install & update
(4) Hopefully you won't have reached this stage & it's been detected &removed. However are you sure that Internet Explorer is NOT corrupted, and the source of what your seeing ?
(Tpo Reinstall Internet Explorer ong computer with Windows XP You need to reinstall Service Pack 2 (a 60-90 minute process as it's a big file) and update your system subsequent)
(5) To detect The 'paparsite' will take in one of 2 forms
This get's technical so I don't know how savvy you are
- 'xxxx.exe' process in the Task Manager. vene identifying the proecess & killing it, you need to search for that process on your computer & detect that file...if it has it's own folder with other support files, then dlete that folder as well ( c:\program files\happy shopper for example, not c;\windows\system32)
- .dll file very tricky to find though very common because the windows XP will need to be restarted in 'safe Mode with Command Line' in order to remove the offending files (del

Ther's no way i'd recommend anyone try step 5 unless they have done it before & knew what they are doing

wish you well

lasslooking:
Well stated!..Just to echo that...

Firefox ~ It's free & degrees safer that Internet explorer of Windows XP. Adblock extension is useful but dones't function all the time

Spyware Tools - Whatever you use\buy, Ad-Aware(now v2007) & spybot are essential ~ they are both free & used by the experts (i.e. me!)

Scanning Policy ~the more new websites you navigate too the more your prone to these parasites. Daily Scan might not stay nin your subconcious, but do it after you do the weekly hovvering & it will!

Anti_Virus ~Norton(Symantec) AntiVirus, like Internet explorer are victoims of their owne sucess & mroe & more viruses are learning of ways on how to avoid them/ also they are 'heavy' on reosurces for your PC, so if you using 512mb pc thats not CoreDuo\2duo\Amd x2) you'll be experiencing a perfomanbce hit

spwyare isn't just Pop-Ups, spyware is in the form of cookies which are target, for example if you shop online line at a supplier, which products you have chosen or looked at are recorded in the cookie, it's that information that is utilised

Easy setting in the browser prefs to deal with that, nothing gets in, ...or out, unless I "let it".

This is good for - "nothing calls home"

little trick with the more high end avg anti-virus figured this one out back in 2004. If you got emails comming in with a virus attachment at random say for example one like this

mypictures.fun.scr you could go into the advanced options and add something like this

*.*.* or *_*.* ad all those attachments were then whistled off to the virus vault atomaticly. You could also block spam with html by adding *.html and *.*.html was funny as hell those emails went into the vault and flush I fired the whole lot of them in one shoot.

My computer was hijacked when the trial McAfee ran out before I had TrendMicro installed.
I am wondering if El Paso Lemon Tree may have something to do with it, since when I clicked
on the profile, it said height less than 5'0 and profession said good oral sex, so it looked weird. I couldn't find how to contact administration to report the strange profile and block it. I am trying to change all of my e-mail passwords, etc. with my desktop. I am having my laptop (which is a new Toshiba) checked at Best Buy and the Trend Micro Security Suite installed. I would appreciate knowing an actual administration e-mail address that I can send problems like this to.

Spyware professionals recommend that you have 3 or more spyware programs installed on your OS. One spyware program will not detect and remove all spyware.

Programs I strongly recommend:

1. SpywareBlaster
2. SpywareGuard
3. Ad-aware
4. Spybot Search and Destroy
5. Counterspy (Same creators as Windows)
6. Spysweeper

A spyware scan should be done at least weekly and any time your OS is acting strange or slow. Your best scanning at the end of the day, when you are not using the OS. After the scan make sure you restart the computer to prevent spyware from returning.

Doesn't spyware suck???

Note: several programs allow automatic updates and scans.
