sounds like you need to uninstall and re-install your software.
anyway, someone used my computer and used Microshaft Internet Exploder. so now, ever so often it gives me an occasional pop-up. Every program i got says it got rid of the stuff, but it simple doesn't work. I use the corporate edition of the adware software so I know my anti-spy ware is good.
without doing a full restore, i simply went into IE and changed my proxy settings to the address 0.0.0.0 port 80. Needless to say, when it pops up, nothing happens. So now, i sit back and wait for my adware to develop a fix.

This might be a silly question but what exactly is Linux? I have heard of it a few times now but not sure what it is. Could you explain in layman's terms please; it's a little late for my brain to function right now.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 11/11/2007 11:09:57 AM | | Linux is an alternative Operating System for your PC. It is OpenSource, a product of the Internet and is a free operating system! It was developed by a Finnish undergraduate student Linus Torvaldus in September of 1991.This system allows people to work together on projects while keeping other information private. Linux and many appplications software and peripherals. It does support emulators , so you are able to run propietary software. Linux can support many users, and run many tasks. | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 11/19/2007 8:24:15 PM | Im an IT consultant and have had many calls dealing with malware of all kinds. If youre going to rely on a program like spybot or adaware its impoirtant to run them in "safe mode". To get into safe mode tap f8 key shortly after your computer starts up and you should get a menu (white text on black background) .. choose 'safe mode" Unfortunately the people that write malware are aware of such programs and have not been so considerate as to make it easy for a layman to remove thier code with a few mouse clicks. I use a program called 'hijack this" a lot in conjunction with startup enumerators like "Silent Runners". I could write volumes on my expereiences with spyware although it seems to have really slowed down in the last year or so. | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 11/20/2007 10:45:47 PM | I'm hoping someone can help me.. I called Dell last month because my laptop screen went totally black when I logged on. The tech there was very nice and helped me remotely. It was my video card/driver. But, since that happened when I scroll instead of scrolling smoothly it "ripples" and hard to control. It keeps scrolling/rippling for a second or two before it stops.
I don't think it's the mouse (Logitech wireless) because it does the same thing when I use the up and down arrow keys. I'm not very computer literate so please be kind and use jargon I will understand if anyone knows how to repair it. Thanks

The driver for the video card could be missing or corrupted - video drivers are critical and commonly cause fatal boot errors. In IT work, you must be meticulous - change something, see if it works, if not change it back and try something else. Eventually you will find the solution, it's just methodical and time consuming. That being said, I believe your issues are hardware related - the video card may just need to be pulled out and re-seated. The interior of the machine could be packed full of dust, clogging the exhaust fans for the power supply, the processor and the case itself which results in high temperatures - not good for PC hardware. The video card may be on its last legs and will eventually need to be replaced. Check all of your connections (VGA or DVI), swap out the cable, try hooking the machine up to another monitor and see if it behaves the same way, verify that you are using the correct resolution for your particular monitor, verify that it's not the monitor that's having problems. If you have a bad video card, even if Dell won't replace it under warranty, you can buy one at Best Buy for under $100 and have them install it. It's one of the best things that can go wrong, honestly. Anyway, this is all speculation - in my experience (6 years IT Help Desk), if the driver is incompatible or damaged the graphic repercussions are usually pretty extreme - patterns everywhere, bright pink box patterns across the screen - you would barely be able to see anything.
So to eliminate the driver possibility, try these steps:
Step 1 - Run Windows Updates, check all the optional software updates for the latest video driver and install. Windows Updates will pick up drivers for some non-Microsoft hardware/software. Reboot.
If that doesn't work, try it this way: Step 2 - Update the driver manually. Right click on My Computer, Select Properties, Select Device Manager, Right click on whatever you have under Display Adapter (the video card itself) - you may want to write down the manufacturer/series/model for Step 3, if you need it. Select Properties, Select the Driver Tab, Select Update Driver, allow Windows to check automatically etc. Follow the steps and reboot.
If that doesn't work, you can try one last driver-related attempt:
Step 3 - At this point you will know the exact manufacturer and version of your video card (under Display Adapters) - go to their website and download and install the latest driver for this video card.
If this doesn't fix the problem, search the manufacturer's website knowledgebase or perform a Google search using a basic description ('rippling'..'lines'...'problem') and the video card's model...it's a great way to find solutions.
Can Dell actually get away with not solving your problem ? At some point I would advise them that you're a normal person, not an engineer and you don't have time for this - you want to ship it back for repair or have a tech come out and look at it.
You can also uninstall the video card through Device Manager and reboot - Windows will detect it again and go through all steps reinstall - I have seen this work countless times with network cards and wireless adapters.
You owe me $200 for this message.

If you have no other options, AVG is okay. If you have other options, use Norton/Symantec Anti Virus (no firewall necessary) in combination with Spybot and Spywareblaster and you'll never have any problems.
I have experimented with AVG and ended up with several minor trojans - although they were somewhat inconsequential and I have seen professional testing reports that showed AVG to be an excellent product (even the free version), my own personal experience did not even come close to the expectations raised by those studies.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 1/6/2008 6:47:54 AM | | I don't know what virus I have but suddenly everything on my pc runs incredibly slow. I dowloaded AVG virus scan and it found like 10 infections. I only "healed" them and it still seems to be running slow. I then noticed that I can't turn on my firewall, for some reason it just won't work and I think that may have something to do with it. I just don't have the cash to take it in and have it checked out as that costs way too much money. Anyone got any ideas, before I actually read this thread I almost went out and bought Norton cause I thought it was the best virus cleaner around. Does anyone else have any suggestions??? | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 1/10/2008 7:19:11 PM | I love all the "install linux" posts. You "IT guys" miss the point here. Most Windows users are not computer literate, hence the reason they use Windows to begin with. If people find themselves fighting malware every day, what makes you think these same people are going to understand linux installations and some of the command line commands necessary for program installs?
Remember, people. Typical IT guys will recommend Windows to you because they know Windows will break on you and you will have to call them (and pay them) for their assistance. It's an ego thing.

MAC DO get spyware spwyare isn't just Pop-Ups, spyware is in the form of cookies which are target, for example if you shop online line at a supplier, which products you have chosen or looked at are recorded in the cookie, it's that information that is utilised
another name is privacy-ware
Wrong. While it is true that cookies can track your movement, spyware and adware generally refer to programs that automatically install themselves and run in the background. Once these programs are running, they can hijack your browser, record your keystrokes, etc. This kind of evil software is not found on Mac. The only way to have these programs run on your Mac is to install it purposely, using your admin user name and password. If you purposely install a program that comes from a questionable source, then you deserve your fate.
By the way, it's Mac, not MAC. MAC is Media Access Control. Mac is short for Macintosh.
My name is smellofpoop. You wouldn't call me SMELL for short. It would be smell (or smelly )

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 1/16/2008 6:12:19 PM | just my two cents....... I've been actively on the net for over 12 years and i only ever been infected by 1 virus... (and it was my own from my um.... collection that i accidentally set off...) Although i have come across many and had many sent to me unknowingly from others....
General rules of thumb for the internet. 1) use firefox. It has less vulnerabilities than explorer. alsoIn firefox, go to addons in the tools menu and download the ad blocker as well.... 2) don't open email attachments. It's amazing how simple many things infect a computer just because of this reason. 3) Don't download crap people. Free programs are free for a reason. (98% of them anyway) If you are not sure about a program, google it. Do the research.... after all you have the internet for a reason other than just porn right? put it to good use.
Oh, and just because you get a pop up saying you are infected and you need to download program "X" to eliminate it... dont fall for that. that move will always end up infecting you. most spyware removers are nothing more than gimmicks for someone to make a few dollars. I've tried quite a few in my time and not ONE of them can replace a little bit of common sense... and several are just masked spyware to start with.

I beg to differ. Most anti-malware/spyware that are free at least give you an on-demand scanner and free updates. Maintaining such a program requires constant work, scanning the Internet and chatrooms looking for new variants of existing vulnerabilities or new malware altogether. And that's just for the definitions, which most vendors update several times a day or at a minimum once a day. When you add the time it takes to code the program, the cost of the software required to code the program, the beta testing, all this can be very expensive especially for small developers. No developer or business doing this full time will be able to give away everything for free and not get anything in return. In this business it goes beyond the financial gain - it's the passion for this type of work.
As for not one of them being able to replace common sense, that's partially true. Sometimes common sense doesn't always prevail and there will always be mistakes made, after all we're human. I've seen plenty of cases where some of these tools, and all are available free of charge, are able to eliminate a hell of a lot of mess from a system that the user would otherwise be required to format. So yes, common sense is often the best defense against malware but it's nice to know there are people out there, and most anti-malware/spyware developers are indeed very small companies, that are working hard to bring you some sanity and help you restore your system whenever your common sense slips.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 1/22/2008 8:16:25 PM | Norton is garbage I consider it a virus! You shouldn't need to run spyware scanners, when I do use windows I use a program called sandboxie. When you open a program with sandboxie, everything is contained in the sandbox. So you're safe from viruses also. Firefox usually blocks most popups if you aren't happy use opera. | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 1/22/2008 9:19:43 PM | Wow I didnt even read this thread......I kinda glazed over it
The weakest link in security is not the OS (Operating System...)...it is the User that downloads everything...and clicks on all those pretty blue links.......in thier email....and then enters the same password they use for everything...........DUH

Unless I save to my dvd disc when I reboot or shutdown nothing can be changed. I just save files to hard drive. I only use windows to print since I can't get it working with linux yet.
I am glad I don't have to scan for malware anymore.

I am glad I don't have to scan for malware anymore. If you surf the Internet and don't have some kind of an ad-blocker, you will get spyware on your system in the form of tracking cookies and web-bugs (invisible). That is, unless you disable cookies altogether. It doesn't matter what system you use, if it's online then you're always at risk though obviously the risk varies between the different operating systems.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 2/10/2008 10:31:12 PM | | I had a browser hijacker that I got from this site. Yes while using nortons internet security, on my brand new 3 day old pc. Norton's charged me $99.95 to 'clean' out VIRUS? and proceeded to damage new system in the process. They have refused to acknowledge me ever since I demanded a refund. Norton's doesn't know what the heck they're doing, I don't care how many awards they win in their field. Useless they are. | |
