Once I figured out how to fix that Trojan, which is pretty easy, then Malwarebytes worked great. (I've always seen the clbdriver/Troj/NtRootK-DR malware combined with the AntivirusPro 2008 malware.)

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 3/25/2009 9:20:44 PM | Hi. So many pages - figured I'd add my twenty cents worth, and comment on tigg_37's suggestion - first. He suggested adding more memory to your computer - 4 to 6GB. First, if you are running windows XP - it - internally - only supports 3.3 GB. So 4GB is a good choice. Only add more than 4GB if you are running a 64-bit OS like XP 64 or Vista. the 64-bit version of XP as well as Vista 64 have a different memory / application handling architecture that can actually use the additional memory. I have a quad processor 64-bit Vista Ultimate.
Ok - from a 27 year seasoned tech (hardware and software engineer), and NO - if I or anyone that worked for me ever put anything on a customers computer - they would be fired! And in fact - it is a federal crime I believe to knowingly implant a virus on a system. Course - suppose there are some.
My suggestion for everyone including the 'popups, homepage changing' virus, or should I say set of viruses... (my friend's system was infected - see 'worst case' below) First trial: 1) Shut down your computer (as some viruses may stay in memory). 2) Start it and immediately press F8 - when the start menu shows - press F5 or select 'Safe mode'. 3) Try internet explorer - if your system does not have internet access (i.e. required full mode - skip this and see worst case below). If your system can access the internet - you have a mild infection that is possibly not active right now - go to http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and get the latest free edition (assuming you are a home user - otherwise buy Avast or something good (and this does NOT mean Norton - I Beta-tested every operating system for Microsoft since Windows95 - and Norton (Symantec) consistently broke the rules, added code that worked for them without asking MS how to do stuff i.e. they'd search the registry for a setting they wanted to know and used what they found without looking at MS reference guides = really hung the OS's during almost every beta I was in). Worst case: Here are a couple ways to clean up your system. 1) Do you have another computer that is not infected? Yes: a) Remove the hard drive from the infected system b) Ensure all Windows Update are installed on the clean system c) Install the latest anti-virus program (Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html is my preferred totally free home version. It integrates with email and does NOT add advertising like AVG does - but AVG is my second choice. d) Go online and make sure the anti-virus is updated - program AND virus definitions (two update for avast). e) Shut down the clean system and attach the infected hard drive - make sure it is attached to a SECONDARY or non-booting position in the system. f) Boot, run A/V and scan/clean the infected drive. Suggestion: If the infections are located in the operating system folders as reported during the scan - I would strongly suggest NOT attempting to use this drive OS again. As was my friends PC - 122 viruses detected. Solution was to copy his My Documents folder to an empty partition/folder on the clean system then full (not quick) format the drive (NTFS if XP or Vista). Best way to do this is in Control Panel -> Adminstrative Tools -> Computer Management. Pick 'Disk Management', select the bad drive, right click and select Delete Volume on each shown, then Format - make sure to select 'Primary Partition'. Note: For added safety - here's a tip: If your running XP (and Vista if you want) and your hard drive is over 40GB (not set, just around that - little less is ok - just make sure there is enough room for the OS). In the Disk Management section above, make the Primary Partition around 10GB (15GB for Vista), Add a second partition with the remainder of the drive, or at least (need to look up OS sizes, it's been a while - I forgot) - I'd guess 100GB for XP, and 150GB for Vista - more if you like to install a lot of programs. g) Put the now cleaned and formatted hard drive back in the infected computer AND disconnect the internet connection - unless you have a hardware firewall, then you can leave it connected! -> Hopefully, if you have DSL or especially Cable Modems - you went out and bought a hardware Firewall/Router - put it between the modem and computer. If your modem has an integrated Firewall - your ok. h) Boot your OS DVD/CD (may need to enter the BIOS (startup settings) on the computer by pressing F2, F1 or Delete during boot - usually says on screen - and set the system to boot from CD/DVD drive first. i) Enter the installation - if possible, click Custom to put Vista / XP on the D: drive It may be necessary to let the OS start on C: and then reboot during the install, boot of the disk again, let it find the partial on C: but click 'Install to different partition', and if asked - pick a different folder name. I.e. D:\xpwin or D:\itvista instead of d:\Windows j) After all installed - Install Avast AV, Vista Firewall is OK (remember, you have a hardware firewall now - right!) unless you really want to know whats hit your PC, then get zonelabs ZoneAlarm. (hint: check http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/board?board.id=ZoneAlarmBeta and you may want to 'beta' test the latest version they have for free - do not do this if you do not have a hardware firewall!) Advantage: you now have a boot drive C: but your OS is on D: (or E: if you have 2 drives) Second advantage: Enter System and change your PageFile drive from your OS partition to the C: partition - advantage, it will almost never get fragmented and your OS will run faster. I set a fixed pagefile on c: of a size 1024 larger than 'recommended' and leave it fixed at that size. Add a second pagefile on your OS drive with a very low min and like 4096 max for if you run out of fixed size on C: I had enough left to move my Windows Temporary Internet files folder also to C: - eliminating more drive access/usage from the OS drive so again less fragmenting - faster OS. k) Run Windows Update and keep at it till nothing shows to update. l) Other stuff: Adaware - removes advertising data - NOT viruses - I used to use it - kindof a waste of time since it does not (or at least it did not used to) do any kind of protection other than visit tracking and advertisements. Avast does a GREAT job at finding stuff. I have received numerous viruses from friends infected systems via email, and attempted by web-sites (note some 'bad' sites pop-up windows have the X close icon execute the virus - best to use End Task for pop-ups, especially if they say anything about 'your system is infected'...), anyways - I was saying - received many - but have not have a single infection since 1998.
Here's a close call story - meant to make you more aware: Had a close one once - With RoadRunner Cable Internet modem attached - I reinstalled Windows 2000 (yes, long ago) - fortunately I had the above layout, plus a second drive as D: so my C: was empty and I installed to E:\winxppro partition. Well, in the 2 minutes it took to install ZoneAlarm (no hardware firewall then - I've learned) I had two 2MB trojans written to my Shared folder - these were mime encoded to auto-run as music files, thus install the trojan instantly just by looking at the folder (wonderful OS would 'pre-load' them for playing you know)... Well, these two were both hard-coded to install their parts into C:\Windows - I was saved just because my OS was on a different drive. Well, not all virus/trojan writers are this stupid to hard code paths - not with %windows% automatically pointing to your OS folder... but in some cases it may help.
Oh - Method TWO for recovering from an infection: Download Avast to a clean system and save it to a USB drive or Floppy. Shut down, then start your system. Again press F8, then safe mode as described above. Attach the USB drive or insert floppy and install the AV program Reboot upon completion - Avast will offer a 'boot-time' scan - DO IT. This runs before the OS loads. This might remove and clean your system - but no promises as some files infected/damaged may be OS files and not fixable... thus a clean full install is again in order.
Method THREE - Get a new hard drive, temp disconnect infected one - install your OS to the new one - after it is up and stable continue as above and attach, clean and then delete the OS folder from the old one - just copy your old data off it and reformat it.
Method Four - Avast sells a Bootable AV program now called Avast Bart CD Manager. (sorry - it costs $ - but does literally everything.) You can pay, download it to a clean system and burn a bootable disk with AV, reg cleaner, tons of stuff...
Just remember - Backup your personal stuff often. Do NOT store important stuff on your system anywhere, or if you do - at least right click the folder, select 'Advanced' and pick Encrypt to secure the folder to your login - though if you get infected - the OS and thus the infection can read this folder. Hint - if you save a file with passwords in it - get Winzip or an archiving program capable of 512 or at least 256 bit encryption - add and encrypt these files to an archive - at least, if someone does get them they will odds are - pass them up for someone else's file than try to decrypt them.
Ok - this ends lesson one. Best of luck to everyone. Bob

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 4/11/2009 8:44:34 PM | Linux users such as myself tend to get very smug when reading these sorts of forums... but there are things we can do to be more secure too. I have my /home directory in a separate partition on my main PC... if the system goes down, I just format and reinstall without loosing any /home data. If /home goes down, I have it backed up, and I don't have to reinstall the system.
ALL computers connected to the net should have an active firewall. The one with openSUSE seems to be pretty good, but that may just be aesthetics talking. Novell really know how to make things feel more secure.
Apt-get means you almost never need to run a random program off the internet. Its essentially what the app store is providing for the Mac - a centralised location for software that brings a greater level of security and simplicity to installation.
Flash is still the bane of internet existence. Running AdBlock Plus and NoScript on Firefox are a good start. using Gnash over the Adobe plug-ins WILL break some sites, but it's open-source and allows for a higher moral ground :)
Telling someone 'Use Mac' or 'Use Linux' does not instantly give them the knowledge they need to be more secure online. It doesn't matter what OS you are running, sending your bank details to the nice god-fearing Nigerian in the email is going to leave you in the poo. When enough idiots come over to Linux, we'll get enough malware to exploit them :)

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 4/20/2009 11:14:10 AM | Er, gonna have to disagree here. Microsoft Antispyware no longer exists, period. It's Windows Defender now. Anything with the name MS AntiSpyware2009 is actually a virus (a variant of AntiVirus2009, Antivirus360, Antivirus1, etc etc ad infintum).
Spybot is fine, as is Ad-Aware, as is Defender. They all search in different ways, and find things the others don't.
BitDefender is an AV/AS tool, and just like AVG's free AV it only offers partial coverage. It's free, you don't get all the goodies.
SpywareBlaster is pure crap, and should be classified as Spyware all on it's own.
I manually remove things with my job, and it's a lot faster than running 4389573298457293 scans. But, you have to know what you're doing.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 4/25/2009 2:15:51 PM | Why is it that POF is allowing a company to advertise on there site that is known to actively Distribute Virus, Malware and Trojans?
WOT (Web OF Trust) being a user based site rates 'smileycentral.com' As being a DANGEROUS SITE.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is building a case against them and anyone associated with them for the distribution of DANGEROUS CONTENT.
Why would POF allow this to happen to there clients by associating with these criminals?
Revenue can't be that bad that you need there money.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 5/3/2009 7:25:21 AM | The one tech guy provided some great information. 1) Avast (http://www.avast.com/) - great free anti-virus. It's moderately effective against other malware, such as spyware and adware. 2) Malwarebytes (Malwarebytes.org) - great malware remover, also free.
I recommend rebooting into safe mode (pressing F8 at the spash screen when options appear). Then, in safe mode, run thorough scans from both Avast and Malwarebytes. When finished, do it again. Yes, I've seen things get picked up on the second (and even a third) run.
Keep in mind, there is no 100% guarantee that, after all scans and removals are complete, that you are fully malware free. Only a full re-install can guarantee that.

...let me ask you 1 simple question if you own a business would you give away something good for free the answer is NO
Some of the worlds most secure operating systems are free of charge (UNIX-Based OSes including but not limited to: FreeBSD, CentOS Enterprise Server, OpenSolaris by SunMicrosystems & openSUSE by Novell)
There are many antivirus/anti-malware companies that do in fact have very good & very effective free versions of software (usually for home use) and also have Paid versions ( usually for businesses and/or those who want advanced functionality)
example:
avast! antivirus Home Edition is available free of charge for non-commercial home use ONLY. If you are not a home user or if you use your computer for business purposes, please download the avast! Professional Edition.
avast! antivirus Home Edition is FREE to use but it is necessary to register before the end of the initial 60 day trial period. Following the registration you will receive by e-mail a license key valid for a period of 1 year. After you have downloaded and installed the program, the license key must be inserted into it within 60 days. The registration process is very easy, and it will take you only a couple of minutes.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 5/13/2009 7:45:07 PM | I agree with you fully. I fix computers on the side for extra money and 95% of my customers are due to spy ware. Very rarely do I see a virus but that is what they all think they have. Spy ware can cause more damage than a virus as it just stays in the back and you do not realize that you are infected. If you have a virus which I have only had one that was real in all my years then it will do more than slow you down it will crash your system and it takes someone that knows to get you back up without losing all your files. I see you suggest software that is good but I noticed you did not include AVG. This is free and probably the best anti virus and spy ware that is out there. It is free and takes care of itself by downloading updates and scanning computer daily. In my opinion and as far as I know the most widely used virus software out there it is in the top 3 programs. Norton and McAfee are useless the only thing they are good for is businesses as most employers do not allow you to use the internet for anything other than work. If you surf the net at all then you will have no protection at all from them. They are garbage and I can not believe they have the nerve to charge for their software. Ad-adware is another great free program I use it along with AVG. I used to use SpyBot again free but AVG has now included Spy ware. I say AVG and Ad-Aware and you will never have a problem at all. | |

>AVG is great, I just prefer Avast(also takes care of it's self) -Both Great, Comes down to personal preference Avast has a "Boot Scan" option that is really excellent & scans more quickly before Windows boots (b/c Windows isn't running) & picks up on rootkits that hide after Windows boots up (can be found w/Rootkit Revealer after windows boots but uses special mode) -rootkit revealer can be downloaded from microsoft's technet site -Haven't used AVG in a while & not sure if it has the bootscan option
<div class='quote'> Norton and McAfee are useless
Can't agree with you more
& Spybot is great but many of my home clients never use it b/c it seems too complicated to them so I give them SpywareBlaster (for immunization) & Malwarebytes(MBAM)instead Superantispyware is great too
AdAware is okay, many of my clients like it b/c it is very user friendly Users who decide to download this: ***Be Careful When Downloading. *** Make Sure You Get It From LAVASOFT SITE, Rogueware (Bad Stuff) pops up 1st in search results

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 5/20/2009 12:59:03 AM | ....another way of blocking Ads & spyware, is using something call the HOSTS file, which some sites, such as contributor mvps.org populate with all known malicious & ads sites & redirects them to ablack hole on your computer You might notice a delay when going to a new site of about a second, but it works perfectly The machnism, FYI, is when a web page tries to go to something like ads.adsandads.com, it requets the page from a compuert plack hole on your PC (127.0.0.1 & not the actual IP address for the nerds) & never the sites IP location | |
