By far the best fast running real-time security suite I have found is ESET Security. Get it I recommened it over any of them. Im a hardcore gamer and it runs fast and doesnt slow me down. I also download lots of movies and music and it philses out all the garbage. Another thing I like about it is that it doesnt save your passwords for every damn site you visit which makes it easy access for hackers for when they break into your computer. Another thing I like about it the program itself has a password so make a big ass password with some symbols and numbers in the middle to end of the word you use and its better not to use a word. but letters.

i use avg, zone alarm, spybot, adaware and hijack this. am adding firefox add on called noscript and adblocker. no script allows temporary cookies at your discretion site specific. in beginning a pain but then you get the hang of it. also important to set your security features and log off each site. as well as do not let them remember you. if someone must log onto your computer, i suggest team viewer where the passcodes can be changed each time. these suggestions have come from a variety of computer geek buddies. i am logical but not personally tech saavy. my current concern as per another thread is safety with online email keeping your inbox in trash and uploading sent mail from outlook express. that is driving me nuts!!!

I don't know about phones getting infected but they do make anti-virus for them so maybe also Avira isn't bad anti-virus and is free i also recommend using the Web Of Trust WOT plugin and maybe siteadvisor too they both block bad websites and will warn you if a download is potentially spyware,adware etc.

They can be infected. trust me. Ive just been hit on my laptop and I'm fuming. . there's that much downloadable software that makes it easy to be who you are not...or worse still hack into a legitimate account. it isnt just on POF but anywhere on the internet

Haven't taken the time to read all the suggestions but what I have read are good.
Some points to ponder:
1. Something you might want to try out is Malware Bytes. I downloaded it (free), installed it and ran it. In spite of having Microsoft's offering and AVG this found 44 other problems including registry problems.

2. Even though Linux, all flavours, is more difficult to infect it has been done and there are anti-virus as well as clean up programs to use.

3. I am a network engineer.

To repeat, all the suggestions I read were good. Also, be careful of rootkits. Not terribly common but can be a real pain.

I have found that there are two other programs that are free and do a really great job as well. They are SuperAnitSpyware, http://www.superantispyware.com/, and also Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, http://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/malware_lp/?gclid=CI_Dk9ymvLUCFZG6zAodlXAABw. Malwarebytes has both a free and a paid version. I find that both of these work better than Spybot and Ad-Aware as both of there give many false positives. Personally the Microsoft one I would not even bother with, some reports show that it misses a lot of things.
For a web browser I would use Google Chrome. Reports show that it is the most secure web browser right now, with IE being the most insecure. If you want you can get Ad Block Plus as an ad in for Chrome which works really well.

My advice?

If on a PC:
Run the standard Internet Explorer browser. Download and install the Microsoft Security Essentials software and do a full scan. Make sure that the software firewall feature of Windows is turned on. The only free software that you should download from the Internet: Adobe Reader (but make sure to disable any options to install other things like the Google Toolbar, for example), Macromedia Flash plug-in, Skype. Twice a month run Windows Update.

If on a Mac:
Run the standard Safari browser. The only free software that you should download from the Internet: Adobe Reader, Macromedia Flash plug-in, Skype. Once every six months check for software updates.

Never install a toolbar for your browser. Don't download free programs other than the ones I've listed above. If you surf porn never ever download anything so that you can webcam anyone.

IE is well known to be the worst browser for security. You should also steer clear of it because of a lack of standards compliance.

Safari has also had some fairly major security issues uncovered in the past but got patched up before it was known.
The rule of thumb is that the more mainstream a product is, the more people are going to be working on making viruses for it. On the other hand you want something that is well supported. Anything Linux/BSD unless you are doing something that makes you a target, you will likely never need antivirus protection. Mac is not too bad, but Windows you're going to have to accept that you're going to need to routinely disinfect the thing. Android being a growing market (Yes you can get viruses/adware/spyware on your phone) can be expected to have problems in the future despite its Linux origins; though it is inherently rife with adds anyway.

IE 10 seems to have fixed a lot of issues, including conforming to standards. I was using IE 9 for a long time and it had big issues with POF. It often would show empty boxes where there should be an image plus POF would hang up and have to be restarted after being logged on for a while. I installed IE 10 about a week ago and haven't had a single issue with it. The performance is also much better than IE 9, plus text and graphics have a nicer look. You need to have Win 7 as a minimum for IE 10. It won't work on older systems like XP.

First he means well, but

Spybot was out in an age when well 14 years ago there wasnt much good free stuff.
2, frankly the rest suck and never andI repeat never rust anything Microsoft and that stuff is spyware and sucks even spybot search and destroy will find spyware and malware in windows itself and remove it.
Bitdefender is the best period has been for 14 years straight
