| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 5/19/2005 12:09:08 AM | xander, yeah, AVG was having some serious problems for a while. A guy I talked to there (his words, so take 'em with a grain of salt) said that when the 7 was being released their free servers got totally swamped so updating was virtually impossible. That was right after they announced support would be ending for 6.
I'll check out that firewall prog. Sounds good.
dapi, yeah, true but face it, the vast majority use IE because that's what they see when they turn their comp on (and many don't know there's any other choices). :)

So true! But, they need to be educated to the extent that they will be better users of their computer and get more enjoyment/practical use from it. This would mean having fewer phone calls in the early hours asking me to fix things for them. Like last night, one of the Chinese street girls asked me to look at her Viao. She's running XP with a mobile wireless setup and it was virus city. I spent the night cleaning this up for her after taking care of my regular clients.

Public" has trouble understanding why he should be using a more secure browser, much less has a grasp on how to configure a proxy.
K.I.S.S., right? | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 5/26/2005 12:00:17 PM | | Ok, I took some advice from this forum and downloaded MS antispyware. Almost everytime I enter this website, it keeps popping up and telling me that IE plug in spyware is trying to install itself to my computer! Any advice? And I'm not quite a computer idiot, but I'm not an expert either, so please keep it simple! Thanks. | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 5/26/2005 6:41:50 PM | I'm not sure, SaintPeterGirl. I don't run IE anymore because it is so fraught with security holes. After your post, I opened up this very page in IE and didn't get so much as a peep out of MSantispyware.
I'd recommend 1) Make sure your Windows Updates are fully caught up. 2) Stop by www.safer-networking.org and pick up Spybot S&D and update it fully. 3) Go to www.lavasoft.de and get AdAware. Install and fully update it. 4) Boot into Safe Mode (reboot and press F8 every second from power-on until you get a menu) and running a full manual scan of EACH software from there.
If you still get problems after that, let us know.

You may have an 'innocent' program running (or a program that you allowed despite warnings, ie: file sharing and screen saver progs, and some instant messenger progs are great for that) that is monitoring keywords, and while not classic 'spyware' itself, will invoke a call to another site or file within your system as you may have agreed to some licensing agreement somewhere that allows them to do this. When you mention it comes up when you enter this website (dating), and is trying to install a plugin, I'd be fairly sure this is the case. No anti-spyware prog is going to protect you against things you specifically allow (whether you mean to allow them or not).
In cases like this I sometimes refer to http://www.kephyr.com/ and get their Bazooka scanner. Bazooka is different in that it doesn't attempt to remove the software/files, it just finds them and tells you what they are and how to get rid of them if you want. It's not intrusive and doesn't allow for you to give 'permission' for progs to bypass your anti-spyare, so it will find things that other progs have 'allowed' (either intentionally or by accident).
Kephyr also has a great online file dictionary that tells you exactly what these files do and how 'dangerous' each one is and a couple of other cool tools.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 5/30/2005 4:24:21 PM | | I think I may actually have found the source of my problem! I'm pretty sure that I have a virus, but my stupid Norton antivirus won't remove it. Uuhh! I'm going to try that AVG program and see if I can get rid of it that way. I do have a question about that, though. Is there a way to set that to scan my computer right when it boots up, before it starts running most of the programs? I keep getting "access to file denied" when Norton tries to remove it. | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 6/13/2005 1:57:17 AM | | spyware is lethal to dsl broadband connections, but also u have malware, adware, browser hijackers, trojan dialler downloaders etc etc etc..... no 1 programme will get rid of them all trust me, simply because a spyware programme is designed to search for certain signitures thus it will find some and miss others. my solution would be a combo of spybot, spyware doctor, spyhunter, and bullet proof systems spyware remover. of the 3 admin mentioned only spybot is of any use.... firewall, get zonealarm, its free and beats all the others on the market. it also includes a ghost surf option.... for virus protection, avast home edition, this is also free, excellent detection, and it wont slow ur pc down. u can always upgrade these to the pro versions, which can be done for free if u know how. ...... hope this post has been of help | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 6/27/2005 3:43:57 PM | Although this thread has been inactive for three months I am going to say this anyway and hope that someone reads it and it helps them, I have tried adaware, and spybot, and others, and still had problems with adware and spyware. Then I found a unbeatable combination (in my opinion) I am currently running a combination of Zone alarm, which watches over your internet connection so nothing will be coming in or out over your computer with out you knowing about it. And I am also running spy sweeper from webroot, which currently has over 92,000 adware and spyware definitions installed. I have not had a single problem since I started running these two together. Spy sweeper will not allow any changes to your home page, and will not allow anything to be installed into your start up menu with out your knowledge, I will get a pop-up window from spysweeper warning me of any changes BEFORE they take place, asking me if I want to allow the changes.... It's free for 30 days after that its $30 a year to keep running it, but I strongly feel its worth it. Also, I ran adaware and spybot and they didn't find the spyware inbedded in my computer then I ran spy sweeper and it found almost 40 problems and fixed them, and my computer is running perfect again. I highly recommened these two programs....but thats just my opinion. | |
