| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 8/16/2005 7:55:38 AM | I suggest do not by any means, especially with IE.
kill your cookies and java script through your browser settings that should stop any more comming in. Also check what Active X is in your browser see if they are valid domains.
Do not do any banking on line regardless, is the best advice.
some toughts to ponder apon if they found your email addi they probably can find alot more.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 8/30/2005 1:43:41 AM | hey all am basically a network engineer. what i will suggest is
1) Antivirus - I suggest Norton Antivirus AUD 55 only ! - Or you can use AVG, cos thats available for free Make sure you update the virus definitions regularly
2) Antispyware Microsoft Malware Remover - http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx#run - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=40587 Microsoft Antispyware - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
3) Firewall - can be hardware (device) or software (program) which functions in a networked environment to prevent some communications forbidden by the security policy which we define. I suggest Zone Alarm or Norton Internet Security but Sygate is available for free. http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm
4) System cleanup software - to clear junk, invalid registry and shortcut info. - clear temp files, unused and 0 byte files say example System Mechanic software from www.iolo.com
any clarifications, quote my name and post here or write in . thanks ! cheers

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 8/30/2005 8:11:31 PM | I suggest you take a look at eric howes antispyware analiysis and see how well MS compared i think you'll be in for a surprise...If one uses and Im system I suggest Adawre and for virtually everything else is Spybot 1.4 then if you really want good protection Javacools Spyware blaster are the three that work easily on a system.
Now as for hardware and for software firewalls.
Hardware firewalls just block what attempts to comein without you telling it to. the unfortunate part is you can tails on downloaded programs that can be installed on your comptuter that you will have no idea it is broadcasting all over the internet. Ah now here is where a software firewall comes in for it will only let things out that you let out.
A real good cleaner I found is called ccleaner. but spybot does a good bit of track cleaning also.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 8/30/2005 11:04:44 PM | Antispyware feature chart....You decide...
http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-features.htm
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less that a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :) http://www.ccleaner.com/
Enjoy!!

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 9/7/2005 1:10:14 PM | I am pretty much a computer illiterate and I only use my IBM thinkpad laptop (about 8 years old) to read e-mails and surf the web, so would an easier way to get rid of viruses and all the other unwanted programming in my computer( I ran spybot and there was tons of stuff, this and that dialer and whatnot)be to format the C drive (which I think is my computer's hard drive) and reload windows 98? ( I don't think this laptop has the memory and what not to run any operating system more complex than windows 98).
It seems to me formatting C drive and reloading windows would eliminate all the spyware and viruses and whatnot and I could do this periodically. There seems to be so many viruses and spyware and crap in my computer now it takes forever to even log onto the web ( I use a wireless internet connection which runs through a local cellphone network.)
And where would I find out how to reload windows 98? Someone else did this for me when I first stated using this computer because there were so many problems with it it wouldn't connect to the internet.

before and after you install a new platform on any computer. Be sure to read all of it.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 10/17/2005 8:34:45 PM | I run win xp pro with spybot-search & destroy and avg antivirus, Now understand I am a computer tech. and keep firewall, spybot and antivirus up-to-date,, very important!!!!!!
I have had 0 problems with viruses, spyware, tracking software, worms, popups and trojons for the last 5 years!!
I Highly suggest that if you are running XP that you readup on the built-in firewall or take some kind of a course.... It handles 99% of the problems if properly setup..

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 10/17/2005 8:46:37 PM | Sorry, back again. One thing I forgot to mention are the chat programs... I have found, in the last 5 years, that approx. 90% of all worms and trojons are passed on through these programs. AOL messanger and Yahoo messanger are by far the worst for passing on hidden software... Even MSN Messanger pass on some worms.
I have talked to the tech. support people for all three and all you get is it's not our problem, it's our users.... I do not and will not use any of these so called SERVICES

Just thought those that use these programs be extra carefull especially now.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 10/29/2005 10:53:31 AM | You can add a #4 to your download area:
.4 Download and use an alternative browser such as www.opera.com user friendly, ability to block pop-ups, uses alot less resources than IE, tons more secure.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 11/9/2005 9:55:43 PM | | I just use and old pc with SmoothWall Express (free) as a firewall, with 2 nic cards. SmoothWall Express is an open source firewall distribution based on the GNU/Linux operating system. A heck of alot more secure then any program and \or window's system. Requires absolutely no knowledge of Linux to install or use. | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 12/13/2005 12:56:22 AM | | Good topic, this stuff has been a major nuisance. I usually use a combination of microsoft's antispyware, spybot search and destroy, update all the crucial updates every night, then I'll find a trial anti-virus program. I've noticed that Kaspersky and Ewido seem to catch WAYYY more than McAffee and Norton, and I think they give you 15 - 30 day full suite trials. Oh, and make sure that you check for updates on whatever program(s) you are using. | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 12/15/2005 11:26:50 AM | The Opera 8.5 web browser http://www.opera.com/free/ just became free, offered without the ads. As Opera's site is fairly scarce on details, http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2005/09/20/ BetaNews and CNet provide a few more tidbits as to why Opera is now offered without ads, licensing fees, or registration. (Premium support is still available at $29 per year.)
Interestingly, the timing could be fortuitous, given this CNet article published two days ago: "Symantec: Mozilla browsers more vulnerable than IE". (Yes, that's not a misprint.) from..... http://makeashorterlink.com/?W2641525C
Browser security report: Netscape 1 | Opera 1 | Safari 2 | Firefox 3 | Mozilla 4 |Internet Explorer 21
E-mail program security report: PocoMail -no security report?- | Outlook 1 | Thunderbird 1 | Outlook Express 6

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 12/21/2005 1:27:40 PM | the best FREE anti-malware apps: adaware se spybot search and destroy microsoft anti-spyware beta 1 bazooka spyware blaster
you need ALL of them; i routinely have an infection that only ONE of these things picks up -- and i run SYMANTEC anti-virus & their FIREWALL.
ALSO: VERY IMPORTANT to maintain the proper settings for your security software.
if STILL have infection issues, download HIJACKthis, generate a log, and post it to a GOOD open forum -- like landzdown.
internet explorer attracts infections like MAD. best to use firefox, or opera. i've been infected SO MANY TIMES, i don't even allow things like JAVA to run -- unless i'm having trouble with a specific page. then, i change the settings.
but -- you've GOT to set the apps up right. not all the defaults are the most secure ones. i don't have a specific link for those, but landzdown.com is very good for that kind of thing...
***what's with this recent EXPLOSION of adware and malware? the last few months have been RRRRREALLY nasty...
