If you keep getting infections then I would say there is something really wrong with your computer my friend.

First always do windows updates, then install only known GOOD spyware cleaners, as mentioned here.

Then be sure none of these BAD ones are on your computer.....
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#products

Clean your PC as best you can
You should also scan and clean your computer with whatever anti-virus program you happen to have installed on your computer. If you don't have an anti-virus program, you can scan your computer with one of these online anti-virus scanners:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Visit a spyware removal forum
Other Anti-Spyware Tools I request that you post a HijackThis! log. HijackThis! (HJT) is a free program that will scan key system settings on your PC and generate a plain text log that you can copy and paste into a post. Once you've cleaned your PC as best you can, visit one of the following spyware removal forums:Only after running HJT program:You can DL HijackThis from HERE
http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip
# Save the zip file to your desktop. Then create a new folder on your C drive, called either 'HJT or 'HijackThis' and extract the files to that folder. Right click on the "hijackthis.zip" to extract the files. If your running Win 98 or before google winzip. The reason for installing it into its own folder is that when you have it 'Fix' anything that a trained HJT analyst has asked you to 'Fix', HJT makes backups and puts them into that folder which we can access easily, should we need to do so for recovery. Do not, in any instance use HJT to fix anything yourself. One wrong item removed, and you can paralyse your box. Let us do it in the forums. Now your ready to post your log into
The volunteers at the above forums will examine that HJT log and recommend a course of action to fix your PC.
Each forum has its own set of instructions and procedures for requesting help and posting a HJT log, so abide by the requirements of the forum you're visiting. Also, do not attempt to use HJT on your own to fix problems. Let one of the expert volunteers examine your HJT log and advise you on what to fix.
- Start a new discussion topic/thread.
- Give your discussion topic/thread a distinctive title.
- Describe the symptoms and problems you're experiencing.
- Describe what you've already done to solve the problem.
- Copy and paste your HJT log into your post.
- Be patient while waiting for a response.

Note that some of the forums listed above may require you to register for free before posting.
Once a volunteer does give you advice for cleaning your PC, follow those instructions precisely and report back what the results are. Also, you may be asked to download and run other specialized anti-spyware tools to remove the particular spyware that's on your computer.

The volunteer spyware busters who work these anti-spyware forums do this kind of thing all day long, so you'll be in good hands. At times they can be a bit overwhelmed, so please be patient while waiting for help.

In order to help you clean your system, the volunteers at these anti-spyware forums need a good sense for what's going on with your computer. When you're ready to post and request help...

a month or so ago...I spent 1/2 a saturday on the phone and pc with a chic friend.
she thought that she needed a new computer. lol
took me extra time because she uses xp and I'm a 98 and ME kinda guy...
but, a 4 or 5 hour story short....once I got the wrong crap that her fr's had told her about off there....and the right crap (doggienerd jargon) downloaded onto her puter (hours cause it was so slow)...and she finally ran spybot...she removed nearly 950 problems.
I can't remember what she was using as a "pay for" anti-virus...but, it had zero spy-ware protection. Spybot rules. She was amazed how her puter worked after that.
Pandaware has a pretty good, free virus-scan too. It will detect spyware...but, it doesn't automatically remove it.

I found spybot to find and remove problems that ad-aware didn't even detect. All updates were current. I'm not geek enough to know if it is because I'm using ME.

I had Apple for years. I have never had hardware problems. Apple are resistant to virus, and resistant to hacker.
They have the best security on market. It BSD Unix based and that mean it is stable.

I have been running ewido anti-malware since having my first major attack last week. Does an excellent job, cleaning up over 300 problems the first night. Anyone have experience with this product?

*BEWARE SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY*

Ever since I ran it my PC problems became worse. It took 5 1/2 hrs to do a scan and detected NOTHING. I get the feeling it spent all that time opening gateways to spyware, trojans and worms instead of destroying them. I ran Ewido and it found 167 problems. Thankfully I was able to restore my PC to factory settings and start clean again!
I was going to reinstall Norton but I got a prompt instructing me to disable windows firewall protection so I aborted.

Right. The problems I was having shut down my backup capabilities, and many other important functions. I truly believe these are mostly started by the software companies. This is why I have asked about the veracity of Ewida. I have the 14 day trial. After that, will I get a barrage of problems? We shall see.

You are looking at the pay one..download the free version
AVG is indeed terrefic Ive been using it for eons, and ad-aware(the new se personal edition) is great.Spybot search and destroy is also good. When I use windows( I use redhat as primary boot) I have all those running.I use firefox and never use outlook or outlook express, if you insist on using those, disable the preview pane.(I always liked calypso)
One thing people seem to forget is java, under control panel, click on java and delete files, there is quite a few *ickys* hidden there.

Hi SaubleBeachMoo...thanks for the advice. I did the free AVG and the Ad-Ware (se version).
I tried to find the Java, under the control panel and couldn't really find that?!..Is it necessary to run all those software for protection? I'll look up firefox. And i agree with you on the outlook express, really I don't know much about it, but it is messed up on my puter, and it messed my friends up!!

Unfortunately Lace, with Windows, it is and has been for awhile. They dont run per se all the time, only when you run them.Firefox will prevent most popups, and since it isnt embeded in the operating system, usually the registry wont be affected.Internet Explorer share the same security settings and anything can attack both.
If you have ever visited a web site and had to download java applet from sun systems, you will see it as a small coffee cup on the tool bar, and start>settings>control panel it also shows.
I am working late at the loonyversity here..but I will post some free ware to clean your registry and make make your comp. run faster.

Hi Moo...also after I down loaded the AVG and the AD-ware...they keep sending me pop-up messages saying that I have the basic version of their software, but that my "Anti Viral wall" isn't working? Possibly they want me to upgrade for $. That's okay it's just that they have me worried that some kinda virus, or something can enter my system at this point!!??..I wonder if I should just go to Walmart and buy a Norton pack to solve all of this?...thanks so much for helping me...I really don't know about all this because when I bought this Dell, new last year, it came with a Norton pack already installed and I never worried about anything!!..

Ok..is it Ad-Ware ,or ad-aware ,only available at www.lavasoftusa.com ? You should never get a popup after installation. There are so many spoof programs out there under the term ad-ware.
As for Mac and Linux( which I use ) They are indeed open to attacks either from virii or malware..its just if you are going to spend your time writing a virus ,will you do it for 80% plus of the population..or the other O/S's. BSD(Berkley Software Distribution) is available for any O/S.
You mention you have Norton already installed, Norton is indeed a fine program, very memory intensive though, but never run 2 anti virus programs at one.It is fine to have 2 installed, but make sure one runs only at your command under its options.
The registry Cleaner I referred to earlier is Win ASO availabe from download.com.It is semi-freeware, it will scan and only fix 10 errors at a time, then you have to scan it again..but hey its free.If you want to fix it all at the same time..you have to pay.
Okay...I spend enough time here at the loonyversity watching servers...time to have fun at the other forums!
Cheers..and thanks for chatting Lace, if people here are as nice as you maybe all is not lost.

Gosh DARN IT!

I've got something that just ISN'T being picked up by ANYTHING! I have AVG and zone alarm on my compy. I have etrust pest patrol, trend micro anti-spyware, ad aware, AND spybot search and destroy.

I've run all of these, and although they have gotten quite a bit of my computer, I still have something in it that isn't giving out.

It highlights random words. That's the BIGGEST indication. Like coolwebsearch. It always brings up pop ups on anypage. Like this one, for example. Or facebook. Pretty much any search page yeilds two pop ups. And I have two pop up blockers on my computer.

I have something NASTY of a computer infection. Any ideas on what may be the problem? I went into system processes and googled them. Nothing looks unusual. Would hijack this be helpful at this point?

The Ewida picked up everything and has done a wonderful job. My demo period is about over and I will buy it. Highly recommend it, but I do not leave it on all the time, as it is a bit more aggressive in picking on certain softwares. But as far as cleaning house, kicking butt and taking names, you want this product on your PC.

go through msconfig and see what is running there in the startup. Sometimes that ad crap does not show in the process area. To find it click on "start" then "run" type "msconfig"

any questions, let me know.
