| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 6/16/2006 11:31:52 PM | Being in the spyware removal biz for the best part of two years, the one thing i have seen not mentioned is read the EULA (End user license agreement) it usualy precceds the install of programs. It's really surprising what these actually say. Some will outright say in order to use this software you must accept the download of blah blah.
Use of hijack this is dangerous when not familiar with it, as mentioned in a previous thread post on the forum, where tech's that know how to read them.
Hope this help's good luck :)

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 6/17/2006 5:27:12 PM | | Ever read the Windows EULA? According to Microsoft they basically own all the data on your computer as long as Windows is on it. Fortunately EULAs don't always hold up in court. | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 6/26/2006 12:09:14 PM | Just another quick suggestion, not sure if it will help or not but worth a shot.
Goto start > run type in your address you want to get to and click ok, see if that helps.
Or download a different browser such as firefox or opera, and try that. If your using Internet explorer it may be completely messed up.
Good luck. | |

Its cool to see alot of peeps using the free programs on the net, but I was introduced to a program that is the best way of getting rid of spyware! Hitman Pro handles several scanning programs that cleanse your system of all the crap of any different browsers u have and scans the entire HD for stuff!
If you wanna download it go to www.hitmanpro.nl
Seriously its goddamn thorough and its sorted my comp out when its been slowing down or the nets not been working properly

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 7/22/2006 3:09:33 PM | Having worked within the IT industry for about the last 25 years, I'm intimately familiar with viruii, trojans, spyware and the like (collectively: malware)....
One of the most innovative products I've seen in the last little while is McAfee's Anti-Spyware Product.
Unlike most anti-spyware products, McAfee's Anti-Spyware doesn't just sweep your system periodically... ...it actively monitors all running processes - and using heuristic algorithms, it actively tracks, contains and eliminates any activity that even resembles 'spyware'. In that it doesn't solely rely on signatures or fingerprints of 'known' spyware methods (like the other products), it helps protect you even against 0-day (brand new) threats.
I believe McAfee is offering a 30 eval of the product on their website... ...and no, I don't work for or sell McAfee products....
Good Luck | |

Then I would think you would know how to spell "viruses."
One of the most innovative products I've seen in the last little while is McAfee's Anti-Spyware Product. Heuristics won't protect against any half-decent 0-day exploits. And using Heuristics, even in such a manner is hardly new or innovative.
...and no, I don't work for or sell McAfee products.... I doubt that... not even in the past, or for a partner?

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 9/9/2006 11:41:15 PM | Wow, great info here and it is encouraging to read that I am already using most of the recommended programs: *Ad-Aware *Spybot *AVG free virus software And probably the single best thing you can do, use Firefox as a browser. | |
|
| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 9/11/2006 10:01:09 PM | There are two tools needed to clean up spyware.
One, Lavasoft Adaware Two, Spybot Search and destroy.
Number three, when you create an account to use every day do NOT MAKE IT AN ADMINISTRATOR.
If you are logged in as an administrator, any virus or spyware can do anything an admin can do. thats bad.
Make all new accounts 'limited accounts'
when you need to install a program, then you should use your administrator account, but only then.
if you follow step 3 you will probably never EVER have to work about step 1 and 2.
Oh yeah never use internet explorer, firefox or opera will keep you clean.
have a nice day. | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 9/27/2006 7:31:13 PM | Just a little additional advice.. If you ever come across a web page that says "You need to install this to view the page properly" just click no and surf away. Most likely it is their way of tricking you in to downloading and installing spyware/adware.
Always remember, nothing is free. Most software that is offered for free usually does more harm than good. There are a few exceptions, like AVG, ad-aware, Windows Defender, but usually when it is free, beware.
Finally, Internet Explorer 7 is now available, which is very similar to Firefox, including the tabbed browsing feature. The big difference is when a security hole is identified in IE it will be fixed with Windows update. If there is ever a security flaw in Firefox, you will need to get a new version, Windows update wont automatically fix it for you.
Happy Surfing :o) | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 10/11/2006 4:59:09 PM | Firefox versions 1.5 and up will update automatically when there is a new version or updates. You will get a dialog box notifying you that the update or upgrade has been installed and Firefix needs to restart to load the updated version. You can also check for updates manually. This auto-update feature is configurable.
I would also recommend a trojan cleaner/scanner called Ewido. Recently acquired by Grisoft (the AVG anti-virus folks), it is an nifty little program and free to download. Like AVG it can be registered for a fee. Well worth coughing up a few bucks.

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 10/27/2006 1:20:50 PM | | Noooo!! You shouldn't download free spyware protection. Some of them come with there own built in spyware. Look if your going to have a pc you have to invest in good software protection. There's no way around that if you're going to be on the internet. Just like the old saying goes.."you get what you pay for". Try Spysweeper. It's rated high in all pc magazines. Only costs between 20 and 40 dollars depending where you live. It's worth it. | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 12/7/2006 8:34:19 PM | Ok...I'm a computer tech and I'm here to tell ya that it's not a good idea to be downloading free spyware protection. Ya, some work as moderate protection. Did you know that when you download them they come with spyware built in just to fool you on your first scan. Look...if you have a pc then you have to spend money to be safe if you're surfing. I reccomend spysweeper. Voted number 1 for about 3 years now by all the pc mags. This is more important these days then having the best antivrus protection. Viruses are coming in via spyware and antivirus programs aren't keeping us safe enough. And you should buy the software, not download it. It's like the old saying goes. You get what you pay for. | |
|
| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 12/17/2006 7:47:55 PM | ^^^^^Would that be Webroot's Spysweeper?? PC magazines do rate it as very good and Webroot now sweeps for Rootkits ... which are nasty in an attacker's hands. Rootkits attach itself to the OS kernel, thus maintaining access to "root" allowing someone permanent and near undetectable presence on your computer. Remember the infamous Rootkit Sony had on their music CDs?? Watch your backs people. | |

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 12/17/2006 10:05:34 PM | Spybot Search & Destroy http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html
An absolutely amazing program that can considerably speed up your computer, very versatile, used it for 4 years already, updates available on a regular basis. Absolutely amazing.
A word of advice. If you decide to go with this robust contraption, during the installation make sure you OK backing up your registry, very important. Trust me, this works, just don't do anything but Search For Problems and Immmunize, and maybe Stop Process (be careful with this one, read the description on the right 1st).
Basically, if you have Mozilla Firefox, Google toolbar and Spybot Search & Destroy, there must be NO pop-ups whatsoever, no matter what site you visit. Hope this helps. GL.
|
| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing, etc Posted: 12/26/2006 6:41:30 AM | Search & Destroy is a good program but it misses ALOT of stuff. I used this program for years, updated it daily, had the settings on high. It missed so much. PC World agrees.
Firefox blocks almost all pop ups. Pop ups that are part of the actual page, and pop up on the same page are not blocked. I love Firefox, been using it also for some time. Just recently updated to the newest version, which auto spell checks as I type

| IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing Posted: 12/26/2006 6:18:54 PM | One application which I have found works better than any others such as spybot, ad-aware etc is called prevx.
This is free to try for 90 days and then cost around 6 bucks a month.
The problem with spybot and ad-aware is that it creates a folder and litterally just quarantines these malwares. Thats why when you have both ad-aware and spybot, they sometimes warn you that you will see items which were supposedly removed by the last application.
Prevx finds these and deletes them for good.It will make a back up of the registry before cleaning the system incase of something going wrong (havent seen that yet), and then deletes the backup it made after the malware is safely removed, so it does not hog up space on your hard drive.
Also it updates its database everytime you use it and updates itself to look for the most recent threats and verifies the heuristic characteristics of it and sends it back for analasys by the engineers who make this product.
For those who are savy with IT security, the people who made this application were with SANS... so you know it is good.
Don't rely on Internet Exploder, or Internet Exploiter as I call it as there are more holes in that browser than in a sponge. Active X components with embeds in them can litterally render your system useless.( I personally use Firefox)
Try this previx thing out... google it.. I can not put the post of the url to get this product as the moderators will probably take it down.
No I dont work for the company who makes this product either.. I just work in IT security.

Just curious, how would you know that? (I doubt many people leave their ActiveX controls enabled except when visiting trusted sites.)
