That sounds a little scary - 80%?

And I would have guessed they were lies about more minor things, rather things like age or marital status.

I don't like to lie - largely because I don't like to dissapoint people. If you say you're 6'0, and then you show up an dyou're clearly 5'9 or something, then the other person feels like they can't trust you. And there's also the dissapointment.

My account is understated for this reason. In terms of just about everything, including the pictures, understating reduces the chances of dissapointment haha.

One example:

I recently was contacted (on here) by someone who once worked at a facility where I frequently attended. He used to make hints all the time....but NO WAY/NO HOW . Now, this person was in a work program, focusing on integrating people with cognitive-developmental disabilities into the work force. That said, he is high functioning enough to keep a job...

Although I never responded for obvious reasons, I peeked at his profile.

Nice enough pic and he stated his profession was a PERSONAL TRAINER. Yeah right.

Food for thought.

Moral: I am super careful.

Hey OP. I read something similar. My profile is complete fabrication. Well, there might be one or two things that really are "me" and the pics are current. Other than that ~ it's just a bunch of snip-its that made me giggle, so I made them into a profile. I don't know if 80% is fair, but I can't even begin to tell you how many times a night my roommate makes me look at profiles she is browsing to say "is that average to you?" "does that look 54 to you" "how old do you think that picture is?" etc. I don't date, so I don't see all of that, but it seems like an epidemic when you read forums and listen to friends. It's too bad, the net was once a great place to meet people. I came back after 3 + years away and it's nothing like what I used to know. JMO

People obviously get enough satisfaction from experiences online they know can't go anywhere for obvious reasons (a 45 year old flirting with a 20 year old telling him or her she or he is 25).

There's something disturbing about what this reveals. Some people are just in it for internet kicks, and have no intention of ever bringing any of this into the physical world. They might even be deriving that thrill from the fact that people on the other end think the person is for real. Meanwhile, some of us are getting emotionally involved with a complete work of fiction, and the only thing protecting those vulnerable souls is the fact that you don't meet.

Some people are on here because they want to meet real people, not to help someone get off on us getting duped.

This has made me wonder about some of those profiles in the pay sites, where the women join and respond for free.... how many of them are really looking for an actual date?

A freind of mine commented on how attractive some of thes profiles are. And I beleive that they're mostly real people. But I'm begining to think that some might be real people that actually have no real intention of ever meeting someone on here. For them it's just another for a reality-based entertainment, except it's better than TV - it's interactive and they get to be the star.

I can imagine it can feel pretty good, for example to be on 300 people's favorite's lists - especially if those pictures really are yours. Boom - you've got 300 viewers watching your show. You write the script, and watch 'em squirm.

I really do hope none of that is true!

^^Yes, ...........80% admit to supplying false details on their profiles. The information generally relates to age, income and marital status.

>Verygreeneys, I understand/agree with what you are saying.

I guess that is why more and more people on here stay for the forums...eventually...to exchange experiences/thoughts about this 'new' online dating world. (-;

I must say I'm 100% honest. Yet, honesty doesn't appear to win any awards except with one's self. Seems the women on here are too afraid of successful men and only want those who are failures. Oh well, maybe one day it will change.

I don't see the point in lying in a profile, especially if you write one with the intent of meeting people in real life. I can sit here and post a picture of Cindy Crawford and say that's me, but anyone meeting me will know in a second that's not true, so why bother?

That the problem with internet dating. People can lie at first, but then they will eventually get caught. If I meet a great girl one day on this site, I would feel like such an idiot if I went on a date and she busted me on a lie. Knowing my luck she would be hot with a great personality!

I don't see the point of being false on my profile...totally truthful, no-nonsense self expressed there. If it scares someone off, obviously there probably wasn't a very good chance of hookin up with that person anyway. I have met a great guy that I've been dating for about a month, I only went on a 2nd date with him because he had an emergency Diet Pepsi in his truck (I had one in my purse) I'm really glad I took the chance, 'cause he's made me really happy,

sigi I went on a date with someone on this site. When I met him he looked AT LEAST ten years older than his picture. A couple of days later I had email on another dating site and wouldn't you know there's the same guy. It was a site that requires you to put your birthdate in and then automatically puts your age on the profile. Not only was his picture old but he was four years older than his profile ON THIS site says he is.

Yup people lie on their profiles. What I can't understand is WHY lie and then meet someone. It's clearly obvious to that person. I didn't care he looked older or was older but I did care that he had lied so that was the first and last date. If he had been honest with me I would have continued to see him because I really LIKE his personality.

The interesting part is not what the profiles are telling but what they are neglecting to tell.

LOL I know Buzz what thinking the same as I did what becomes to forums - they are the best way, IMO, to learn a bit more about one's personality and set of values. The reactions are sometimes surprising.

But not just that... you can tell all the facts (weight, height, etc.) but leave some other details away. Like writing a CV - you select what to emphasize, what to ut down or off... E.g. divorced/single sounds good but it takes other dimensions if the person is still mourning after the previous one. (Or like Buzz does not mention she is wearing the crown of England and I the tiara of Finland.)

that's why IMO the best is "to grab the bull by its horns" ... and suggest to meet. Applies especially to those ones who seem to be masters of pu s s yfoot i n g.
True colours pop out very swiftly indeed ... as to why n o t
