A DNS translates human friendly web site addresses (like www.plentyoffish.com) into the numerical address that computers use to find each other on the Internet (like 64.69.70.150, which is the address that PlentyofFish is at). It is much easier for us mere mortals to work in words, but the computers still prefer numbers.
