| Star Trek-Trekkies-geeks or not? Posted: 5/10/2009 10:21:40 PM | I was never much of a fan of the show as a kid (my dad was) but I was aware of it. And I've seen some of the later movies, but again, it was just "ok". But I was more of a Star Wars and Aliens nut. (especially Aliens)
I just consider Trekkies really, really big Star Trek fans. But not all sci-fi geeks (like me) were into Star Trek. (I was more of a Buck Rogers and Battlestar Gallactica fan myself growing up)
I did see the new Star Trek movie though. It was good but the ending felt kind of "rushed" and I got a bit confused with the time line, as far as the time travel story line. Got a little confused towards the end. But all in all, it was a pretty good movie.

| Star Trek-Trekkies-geeks or not? Posted: 5/11/2009 8:50:17 AM | I loved the new film. It does something that will help with problems created by the original series. By resetting some events of the old t.v. series, they can now iron out a more solid continuity!
Best character by far was McCoy. That guy who plays him was right on the money!
The most surprising thing was the love affair.
The Romulan commander does bring back memories of Khan and that is what Abrams was aiming for.
Kirk's life is slightly altered now because of the events we see take place. But then again, we see it really hasn't changed his character much. He is just more bad assed.
Spock... what can I say... another dead on.
The only thing I have a problem with is Chekov. My lord, his accent was so thick even I couldn't understand him at times. Gezzz.. litten up on it a bit okay? It's funny at first but gets annoy after awhile.
I'm looking forward to another film now. I don't want a series. Films are the best for Trek now. Perhaps in another 10 years, we can return to a television series. J.J. Abrams will have to head it up though. He did wonders for Star Trek. I think he can do it again.

| Star Trek-Trekkies-geeks or not? Posted: 5/11/2009 10:47:13 PM | I loved the new film I think the film rates a 0.5 star out of 5.
It does something that will help with problems created by the original series And what would those problems be?? Abrams' film has problems too if you think about it and put the movie through critical analysis rather than being just one of the herd and go ga-ga over it..
By resetting some events of the old t.v. series, they can now iron out a more solid continuity! If you had read the interview with writer Bob Orci ... this movie isn't a "reset" of TOS, rather it plays heavily with the idea of multiple realities theory of quantum mechanics. Based on the Orci interview and how they implemented the reality shift in the film, I've found areas where the writing is questionable.
Best character by far was McCoy. That guy who plays him was right on the money! I didn't find any of the characters convincing at all. They tried very hard to become the characters they were supposed to be, but with phrases like "I'm a doctor ... not a physicist" is simply playing on winks and nods to TOS and does nothing to develop that character. I didn't see Kirk in the captain's chair. I saw some actor named Chris Pine.
The most surprising thing was the love affair Only if you're Pine-ing (pun-intended) for Star Trek 90210.
The Romulan commander does bring back memories of Khan and that is what Abrams was aiming for Abrams' stole the idea of "slug in a body" right out of Star Trek II. How original.
Except for Kirk and Spock ... none of the characters had any backstory. Abrams' brought them all together for some Trek love-in. Uhura had as much significance as Deanna Troi on Picard's Enterprise. She was in the film as nothing more than a barbie doll for Spock. Now I wonder ... being the logical Vulcan that he is ... is it rational to "dip his pen in the company ink"??
J.J. Abrams will have to head it up though. He did wonders for Star Trek From my vantage point ... he kill it. Sure the movie ratings are high at the beginning. Let's see if Abrams' "vision" can hold up for 40+ years.

| Star Trek-Trekkies-geeks or not? Posted: 5/12/2009 11:47:00 PM | After reading the 4 comic "prequel to the prequel" which, since it uses characters and situations from ST:TNG and the films one can only assume was signed off on by the franchise owners as "canonical" and was written as part of the film storyline by Orsi, the original universe - call it Star Trek - Prime if you will - goes on unchanged, except with
*SPOILER ALERT*
Nah...just pulling your leg...I'll just stop there. The Star Trek universe of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT goes on "more or less" unchanged.
The events of this film take place in, for all intents and purposes in a different quantum reality through a singularity.
As far as I am concerned I have to agree with some fan reviewers who said it was a rather tiresome way to make a story idea hang together...it sounds like they got an idea and back tracked to paint out of a corner..."how do we make this work without alienating old fans but still getting new ones in..f*ck it, let's use the old alternate universe/time travel device, who cares if it's as hackneyed as hell...it's sci fi, these people buy guys with pointed ears and green blood, what do they care about stories hanging together?"
And for uncritical summer movie fans, they are right. Fans of quality sci-fi might be less impressed (and yes, there clearly is such a thing as viewers of the latest incarnation of BSG or recent episodes of Doctor Who and Torchwood or Fringe would point out).
In the end, to each their own, it is just a matter of personal taste...and it is just a movie...Bill Shatner would advise anyone taking it much more seriously than that to get out of their parents basements, get some good scotch, some cigars, and maybe learn to speak to women instead of Klingon...or at least besides just

| Star Trek-Trekkies-geeks or not? Posted: 5/13/2009 12:31:08 PM | I'm always curious when I hear the word "geek" being bandied about....Who are the "cool" people anyway? I thought that BS stopped when you left high school...or college.
Star Trek is just a show... That's it. If you like it...cool If you don't...that's cool too. It's just entertainment.
Having said all that...liked the show..thought the movie was so-so

i HAVE the barbie and ken star trek dolls I didn't know they made those. To the collectors, they're called action figures. Although ... whatever it's called ... collecting plastic characters seems rather dull.

| Star Trek-Trekkies-geeks or not? Posted: 8/7/2009 1:41:25 PM | Obviously being a totally cool geezer no-one would have ever guessed that I watch it. I've actually kept it from many past girlfriends, however if I'm really bored and there's nothing to do I'll watch it alone.
The problem with Star Trek is people think of the geeky original TV series, which I for one just found boring.
Voyager and Enterprise was good. The next generation was good, Picard is the best character in the whole of Star Trek closely followed by data.
The new Star Trek movie was absolutely awesome, Star Trek badly needed updating and all of the effects really took away the whole geekyness of it.
I don't get all the people who say Enterprise was crap. It had a rawness to it and that's what made it good. I think Trip, Archer, Tapol were really strong characters and the Aliens seemed more interesting, especially the Andorians. The whole relationship between Trip and Tapol was entertaining.
I'm watching DS9 at the moment but most of the characters annoy me. I can't stand Cisco, he's such a PC doo-gooder, if Gordon Brown joined star fleet he would be Cisco, and those bloddy Bajorans all they ever do is moan about the Prophets. Why do so many episodes have to be about Bajoran politics. I really don't care about some make beleive political issues, I want to see space battles, new species and more importantly people getting laid on riser. Also I really can't stand major Kira, she does my head in, as does doctor Bashir, I mean who does he think he is, Cheif Obrien needs to knock him out. The only good thing about DS9 is the Ferengi's, Ferengi's for the win! It's all about profit! The grand negas is a pimp!

| Star Trek-Trekkies-geeks or not? Posted: 8/8/2009 11:04:20 AM | What - a - knob - head... I think DS9 was the best out of the whole set. It went were the other shows never did up till then. War was the obvious over all theme along with all the things that come with it. Then of course, it covered such matters as gay love, human rights issues, slavery, and much more. I don't think any other show touched so much upon the themes this version of Trek did.
I agree with you that Enterprise was given a bad rap by jaded Trek fans. It is the second choice for me in the Trek set. It tried to do what DS9 did but wasn't given the full run of 7 years it deserved.
Call Classic Trek what you will, it still holds a place in my heart. :)

| Star Trek-Trekkies-geeks or not? Posted: 8/27/2009 5:12:38 PM | <------proudly admits to being a Trekkie!!! LOL! yup, I have all 3 seasons of T.O.S.; all 7 seasons of TNG and all 7 seasons of Voyager on DVD....and watch them over and over and over again! LOL! Didn't care all that much for DS9, or Enterprise, but I suppose that I'll eventually collect those sets just to complete a collection. LOL! I have Star Fleet T-shirts, my cell phone ringer is Jean-Luc Picard, my website has about 10 pages dedicated to all the Trek stuff I've collected over the last 18 years (online stuff....pics, animated gifs, .wav files, etc). I have a collection of Star Trek fonts. LOL! my children once told me that I was "weird" because I NEVER owned a Barbie doll when I was a little girl! LOL! I never cared about owning a Barbie doll.....until they came out with Barbie and Ken in Star Fleet uniforms!
I own the Nit Pickers Guides, which I refer to whenever I find something that looks incongruous with the script, just to see what had happened there.
Spock is my ultimate Hero....though I have to admit...I find Klingons to be the sexiest race living!
Live Long and Prosper! | |
