I can't stand Cisco, he's such a PC doo-gooder, if Gordon Brown joined star fleet he would be Cisco The Sisco is PC???? This is the same guy who destroyed a planets atmosphere just to bring one man to justice, and this is also the same man who said the following at the end of Sacrifice of Angels in regards to his actions. "So...I Lied; I cheated; I bribed men to cover the crimes of other men; I'm an accessory to murder. But the most damning thing of all It's I think I can deal with it. And if I had to do it all over again....I would." This combined with his actions later on in the war....he is definitaly not pc. The Next Generation now there's pc, with Picard on his high moral horse constanly going on and on and on about humanity evolving past greed, hatred, bigotry. Which if you watch the series is total b.s. And say what you will about TOS, it was in no way a utopia, not as far as people want to believe; lust, greed, hatred, violence it had all the earmarks of a real society. But after all is said and done like what you wanna like, just don't piss in anothers bowl of Wheates. And to the OP, Even though I'm more of a Brown Coat, I do like Trek (minus Voyager) as well as all Sci-Fi. And to my brothers and sisters in geekdom....... | Star Trek-Trekkies-geeks or not? Posted: 9/8/2009 2:02:11 AM | I don't care if you call me a geek or a nerd or a Trekkie or a Trekker or a fan or a fanatic.
Just don't call me late for Gagh!
Btw, what the heck does everyone have a problem with Voyager for? I keep reading "love ST except Voyager" Geez Louis, guys! ST TNG made me interested in space... Voyager made me appreciate our home, Earth, so much more than I used to... I mean, the whole story thing about the long journey home... how intriguing can you get? I loved the concept. Yes, there were episodes that I'd rather skip... but they didn't make 7 seasons for nothing! my two cents!
Now about Star Trek... to me, it is about Hope. The future doesn't hold prosperity without it. With Hope, we will make the future whatever we want it to be. The show has placed the imaginations of millions on the Galactic Map. It's because of the fervor and excitement of everyone involved, the fans, the cast and crew, that I am now keenly interested in space exploration, different fields of science, technology, and the betterment of humankind. No, Star Trek is not my religion - and frankly I much more enjoy a walk along the beach than bury myself in the show - and for all the criticism that people expend their energy on... they might as well have belonged to the dissident group that slammed Christopher for his visionary spirit. Star Trek was simply this: a catalyst; something that stimulated imagination and stirred up creative thinking, ultimately ushering in a whole new way of thinking of the future.
I take my hat off to the free-spirited thinking of the likes of Gene Roddenberry, and countless others as well, those who truly are from a better place than this world can offer.
You think it's silly that they get an android to experience and express love? There is a message in that silliness. Aliens automatically look and sound like us and speak English? I understand it as having something in common with even the most unusual neighbor, or foreigner, and honoring him/her with the same respect I show myself.
Sure, some shows suck, perhaps bad acting, bad script or storyline, but I forgive all of that for the golden example it has set for our complex morals. The message of peace, love, understanding, acceptance, tolerance, virtuosity, courage, and of greatness.

| Star Trek-Trekkies-geeks or not? Posted: 9/10/2009 2:34:00 AM | | It is a form of entertainment just like any other. I would watch tng and ds9 back in the day, then sort of stopped in the middle of Voyager's run, came back around during Enterprise (people say it sucked but I enjoyed it, especially season 3 ). Thought the new flick this summer was pretty decent. The bottom line is if you enjoy something who gives a damn if it makes you a nerd, a geek, or whatever? It is just important to keep perspective and remember it is just a form of entertainment and not go crazy about it. | |

| Star Trek-Trekkies-geeks or not? Posted: 9/17/2009 2:17:21 AM | Well I thought Voyager was a great show. It made you wonder not just about what was in our own backyard but what was in the neighbors backyard. They opened up a whole slew of new races, places, and oportunities. That said I love all the Star Treks for different reasons. TOS opened my mind to adventure and the possibilities of life on other planets. I started reading all kinds of Sci fi and fantasy after that I barely read anything before that now I read at least two books a week --I know dork--. TNG made me think about the way I treated people who were different from each other. It helped me realize everyone has the potential to be somebody if only they're given a chance. Also I just love Patrick Stewart not just in ST but in almost everything he has ever done; Safe House, Christmas Carol, X-men, etc. DS9 did a great job of showing family interactions under very different types of stress. And not just father son interactions with the Siscos but family interactions with the O'briens, husband wife interactions with Worf and Dax, brotherly bonding with Bashier and Miles. Lost and found love with odo and kira, actually it had a lot of good stuff in it. Voyager of course had strong women leads which as a young woman was important to me. Also like I said it opened up a whole new chapter in the star trek realm of possibilites. Then there's Enterprise, not a bad show even with the timeline flaws. It's good entertainment and Scott Bakula has always been a cutie so theres that too. Now if having opinions about all the Star trek shows makes me a geek so be it. But for the record I do not know anything about phase settings according to scene, reading stardates is not something I can do though I have friends who can, there are only four words of klingonese in my vocabulary, and I have never worn an academy uniform in my life thought again I have that one friend. | |

Admittedly, I do not like classic Star Trek at all. I never could stomach all that retro-futuristic stuff with the cheesy plot-elements and regressive aesthetics. I also thought Enterprise was just awful. Most of the hardcore fans seem to like the classic stuff, and keep pushing for prequels and revisionings of the James T. Kirk days. Blah!

The movies really sucked, as you knew each ended and there was nothing to follow up on. But I did like the others. Voyager was not bad,,,,,had to get used to it. What I hated was the final episodes, they never really fitted with the show thru the years,,,,and seemed empty,,,,do a show and if cancelled send it off the way it went thru the years it was on,,,,

I totally agree with you, Voyager had the most heart warming story. It had a real purpose whereas the other treks felt more like mini stories (bar DS9 with the dominion war).
The whole borg war was intense and the year of hell was totally awesome.
What I don't get is why people cuss ST:Enterprise. I loved the rawness of it all, those were more exciting times in the trek universe, I liked the fact there was no prime directive. The prime directive sucks.
I'm happy to see other Trek fans speaking up here. It's almost a taboo subject in social sites like this. But if you talk about LOST or 24... everyone can relate. Why is that? Trek is just as cool as (and in some cases, better than) the programs you see on T.V. today.
I don't think star trek is taboo now days, I know quite a few people that like voyager. In the UK a lot of channels show the newer star treks so people are generally accustomed to it now.
The geekyness comes from the original series, I'm guessing it was geeky because it was way ahead of its time. Nowdays space travel seems more feasible, hence we now have loads of other shows that are similar to star trek.
