Is it me or is it hard to get a carbon monoxide alarm/detector?
My local argos is sold out and I have to wait until next week before I can get my hands on one from Woolies!
carbon monoxide detectors/filters or whatever they are cheap and don't do the job! | |

B&O sell fireangle ones £24 and argos sell Kidde ones
Go onto argos website and see if any other local argos stores have them, you can reserve them. Is worth driving abit further to be able to get one.
Homebase do them as well, and maybe try tescos.
Search google under carbon monoxide alarms, order online, maybe even Kidde have thier own website

Posted: 10/31/2006 2:14:49 PM | I hope you all realise that just having detectors won't stop CO gases actually entering your home through faulty appliances so not only should you be getting detectors which are only a precaution to detect the gas but more importantly than detectors you have ALL your gas using appliances checked regularly by qualified installers!
Pippa i'm not saying the CO detectors aren't useful i'm saying it's more important to have your appliances checked over anything than getting a detector, what happens if your alseep and you don't hear the detector go off ? there's plenty of scenario's where you may not notice the detector go off so it's more important to have appliances regularly checked than just having a detector thinking it's safe! | |

But aleast for those who maybe dont get them serviced, or cant afford to, detectors DO give you an early warning of a problem
ALSO if you opt for a wall mounted CO detector (and not a ceiling mouted) you can take these away with you on your holidays, as they can be stood uo against a wall on something (where as your not going to be able to drill and mount a ceiling one)

How do you ever get ove anything like that? if I lost my kids, I truely think I would top myself.
And what with holiday season starting up, please consider spending £24 for a audio carbon monoxide detector and taking it with you - I sure will be in August.

will purchase one this week.
Quality prompting thread 
as for the smoke alarms both of ours emit periodic beeps whe the current starts to drop + I test them once a month (reminder on phone)
If your smoke alarm is getting on for 10 years old it's time to replace. Apparently this is down to the efectiveness of the sensors.

as i'm a gas engineer i see many poorly maintained gas fires and boilers and in the last 6 months i have condemned 2 boilers the first was so bad that i took the Flue gas analyser out of the flue at 5600 ppm (parts per million) the unsafe limit is 400 ppm this boiler would have killed had the back door not been permanently open
it is a landlord's legal responsibility to have an annual gas safety inspection on ALL appliances fitted or used within the property and the penalty for failure to do so could even be imprisonment in the event of an accident.
the small square stick on CO patches are only for 6 months and as posted above the battery one is much better about £20-£30 the electronic one is about£45

Here are a few basic tips on co and prevention
If a gas appliance has flames any colour other than blue - turn it off and get a Gas Safe Registered (formerly Corgi) engineer to service it or at least check it for co
The same is true is you have soot around it or any discoloration around or near the appliance.
If you start feeling nausea, tired, headaches. dizzy, fainting or flue like symptoms see your dr and ask for breath or blood tests for co.
With the battery operated alarms as with smoke alarms check your alarm regularly for batteries as when they start to fail they bleep and not a lot of people know this so rather than change the battery the call the emergency service who will not change the battery but will turn the gas off advise you to get your appliances checked by a gas safe registered engineer, as they have to make 100 per cent sure you are safe from anything gas related .
If the bleeping does not stop with new battery or alarm goes off continuously, open doors and windows to ventilate property, turn the gas off at your meter and call 0800 111 999 the gas emergency service who will come out and make sure you are safe, but you will also need to get a gas safe registered engineer for any internal repairs etc to gas appliances and pipe work,
DO NOT PUT OFF GETTING APPLIANCES CHECKED IF THEY LOOK LIKE ABOVE OR YOU MAY NEVER HAVE TO CHECK THEM AGAIN AS THERE IS RISK YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES WILL NOT WAKE UP | |
