I need about five hours unbroken sleep at a time. I can stay up late and then sleep or sleep when I come home and then stay up the whole time. Just as long as the five hours sleep is unbroken within a given 24 hour cycle. When I was younger I needed about eight hours, but this has decreased. The ammount of physical activity doesn't seem to be a factor in how much sleep I need, however, boredom can play a part.
I mean have you ever had to sit through one of those BORING insurance meetings at work? Eyelids are drooping all over the room. Another one is when chatting with somebody for the first time you realise what a crashing bore they are and try to keep awake to be polite until you can get rid of them without hurting their feelings.

Matters not whether i go to bed at 10pm or 2am I am up at first sign of daylight in the swamp. When I work nights I am in bed about 10am and up and at em by 2pm.

mostly men seem to nap

I RESEMBLE THAT REMARK, nothing wrong with half hour power naps to rejuvenate the old body.

When I die I want to go peacefully in my sleep like grandpa .......................not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car!!!!!

Early for me. I bought a new bed about a year ago, put a tv in my bedroom, got new pillows and sheets and blankets and now that it is dark by 5 I am ready to get in bed and watch tv and read by 8 or 9pm!! I am usually asleep by 10. I LOVE to sleep! But I also love to get up early in the morning - at least by 6, often by 5.

I get up between 5-5:30 every morning to exercise before heading out to work. So...I'm usually asleep by 9:30-10:00 pm every night.

Bedtime for me is around midnight or 1am. If I am reading a really good book it could be 2am or later. I have to get up to get the kids off to school at 6am. By the time the second child is delivered to school and I get home it is 8am. Some days I will stay up and start the days running. Other days I may go back and catch a couple hours more sleep.

When my love interest spends the night bedtime shifts based on how tired he is, usually 2am or 3am, then we sleep about six hours. We usually get out of bed around 11am or noon. Personally, if I could get room service for my bedroom I would not leave the room all weekend.

I used to work 3rd shift so my sleep schedule is still all out of whack even after over a month now on second shift. I would like to get at least 5 hours of sleep, so I try to get to bed by 2am, but sometimes I will just lay there awake another hour or more hoping for sleep to come. Then my day starts at 7:00 a.m. getting the kids off to school and what not.

If I get 8+ hours of sleep it seems a lot harder for me to get woke up. I feel as if I had been drugged instead of feeling rested.

I start thinking about going to bed around midnight but usually don't get in bed until closer to 1am. I would love to sleep past 6am but I am usually awake wishing I could fall back to sleep
until 7 am.

There's no normal number of hours that quantifies a good sleep, just like there's no normal shoe size. Most adults need seven to nine hours a night; others manage just fine with six. It's even possible to get too much sleep, since spending excess time in bed can be a sign of another health problem, such as depression or chronic fatigue syndrome.

A 2007 British study found that people who slept the same amount of time (seven hours) each night lived longer, on average, than people who adjusted their schedules to either add or subtract hours from their nightly slumber. Finding your own ideal sleep/wake cycle—and staying consistent—is key to healthy sleep, according to a study written by Carol Ash, DO, medical director of the Sleep for Life center in Hillsborough, N.J.

She goes on to say: That doesn't mean you can shave off hours of much needed rest without consequence: In a different study, the same British scientists also found that people who are consistently sleep deprived (defined as sleeping five hours or less a night) are at greater risk for high blood pressure and cardiovascular problems—especially women.

Insufficient sleep also raises your risk for obesity, diabetes, depression, alcoholism, and automobile accidents. Plus, a 2007 University of California–Berkeley study confirmed the obvious: Sleep deprivation directly affects areas of the brain that deal with mood and concentration, leaving tired people grumpy, overly emotional, and unable to focus.

If you don't dream, you have not hit rem sleep which is when your body repairs itself and you get the best rest. I love my dogs but they think they have to go out during the night on occassion and those nights--I don't get the sleep I need. I don't get really tired until 11 but when the clock goes off at 6, I know I did not get enough sleep. I usually try to nap on the weekends. Just not enough hours for things I need to do and not enough hours for sleep.

What time is bedtime for you?

No "bedtime" for me but seldom go to bed before midnight and am usually up with the sun....

Interestingly, this has come up in dating... if a woman has to be in bed by 8 or 9, it can make it hard on the relationship.

I usually get up between 6am and 6.30am so like to get to bed between 10 and 11pm. I’ll only nap if I’ve had a few bad nights’ sleep in a row.

I was told about 10 years ago by two specialists that I need 10-12 hours of sleep a night. HA! Good luck with that...

I get up at 6 AM for work - and generally try to get to bed by 10 PM. During the weekends, or on days off - I LOVE a nice afternoon nap. Makes me feel better in the evening (not dragging around like a half dead thing).

Why does everyone seem to think it's such a badge of honor NOT to sleep?

Most of the time my day begins at 5 a.m. I typically don't arrive back at home until 6 p.m. But my day isn't over yet. There's still supper and other things to be done, and I like a lil' time to just relax and decompress. I often go to bed between 10--11 p.m., but I don't feel guilty (or old) if I crawl under the covers at 9 p.m.

Now now Mr. Byte, we all know there are things worth losing sleep over...we can both be confused. I didn't know if your emails meant I should get on the next plane - or never speak to you again!

Which makes me wonder - I know another poster said they sleep better with someone in the bed with them, and I do too...but I wonder if anyone else seems to get by with less sleep and in a better frame of mind when they've got someone and don't get hardly any sleep??? LOL - that seems to be my recollection of things....

The sleep you do get then is soooooo far above the lonely nights tossing and turning and tryin to go or return to sleep.

Yeah, a lot of people do wear it as a badge of honor.

We know this thread would never make it through now.. but it did in 2006.
It'll probably get zapped anyway.. but I'll answer.

I go to sleep when sleepy and wake up when I'm done sleeping.

The joys of retirement.

And if you happen to wake up in the middle of the night you get to watch your loved one in a blissful state obviously having sweet dreams of you.

I go to sleep when I've finished watching all the sports highlights I need to watch.
