That was absolutely beautiful, yet heartwrenching.

As long as I'm alive, I'll never forget..nor will I let my children. I just hope and pray they can pass it along to theirs and so on.

The song by Enya was most appropriate.

I'll be at the services this year in honour of my father.

everyone wear their poppy over your heart with pride.

to everyone that has posted on this thread wear red on Nov 10,11 to show support for our troops the pictures do get them and if you have time write a letter to them let them know what it means to you that they are willing to ser our country like they are doing, in 1984 well serving on a U.N peace keeping tour I recived a letter from a grade 3 class from my home town one of the kids wrote she was only asking santa to make sure I was safe and would be home for christmas. This year a country singer came out with a song called Letters from home if you can leason to it,hear the words and feel it in your heart. This remembrance day remember the fallen and pray for the living and their familys

I attend service every year, If I need to take time away from work so be it.
Its sad to see how small the crowds are, hopefully this year with the November 11th falling on a Saturday more people will show up and show thier respect to those who have fought and died for the freedoms we all take for granted.

I always remember the sacrifices made my my forefathers, who fought in the myriad of battles that went on. Not just the recent wars but those who suffered:

During the Expulsion, where so many died needlessly in an attempt at genocide.

During the Revolutionary War, when the family were evicted from their land during the Battle of Monmouth; the sacrifices at Queenston Heights, Lundy's Lane and Stoney Creek; the wars on the Indian Subcontinent, Burma and South Africa.

During the epic slaughters of the First World War, Mons, Verdun, Beaumont Hamel, Thiepval, the Somme, the battles of Arras, Vimy Ridge, Passendaele, Cambrai and the Hundred Days.

During the Second World War, the Battle of the Atlantic, Dieppe, the Raid on St. Naziere, Malta, North Africa, the Thousand Plane Raids on The Rhur and Berlin, Normandy, Caen, Arnhem, the Scheldt, Flushing, the Battle of the Bulge, Fortress Holland.

During Korea, when an uncle was interned as a POW, only to be repatriated two years after the armistice. This episode ruined his health, and he died young as a result of the ill treatment of POWs.

During the Suez Crisis, Cyprus and other UN ventures, when our people were called on to police and enforce peace in the world.

During Vietnam, when Canadians served in the US Armed Forces as volunteers. This is not often remembered.

And I nearly forgot about the Uncle who served his time as a Gunner in NORAD, sealed with his comrades in a bunker for 21 days at a time, his finger on the button, never knowing if the world still existed after the endless drills and tests. Imagine the guilt he'd carry if the world had indeed been destroyed while he sat in his comfortable chair in an air conditioned bunker a half mile below the Canadian Shield?

I remember and reflect upon the sacrifices of the family in all of these sad episodes in human history, and how they performed their thankless tasks with honour and dignity.

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day takes on an entire new meaning, when it's "up close and personal".
I've been going over my notes and photo's, in preparation for school visits this week - can't tell you how many times tears have come to my eyes ...

I hope as many of you as humanly possible will take time out and attend a Remembrance service at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month - I asked somebody if he'd attend at my Regimental monument (North end of Queen's Park), only to discover that a hockey practice was more important than Remembrance Day ... which saddens me enormously, especially when you recall the words from "In Flanders Fields":

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Todd Heisler, The Rocky Mountain News:
The night before the burial of her husband’s body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of ‘Cat,’ and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. “I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it,” she said. “I think that’s what he would have wanted.”

Laurence Bunyon, For The Fallen:
... They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them. ...

Howie you are right,I wish people back in Canada would realize how uplifting a letter from home saying "we support you and what you are doing"or "you are in our prayers"can do for your morale when you are far from home.Sometimes you can be around a hundred guys and still feel lonely and forgotten by everybody except your family. One of those letters can really make you feel appreciated.
051773,a great link,it's awesome to see people showing their support.

Remembrance Day for me is everyday.......remembering both my father and mother who served in the RCAF during WWII, all 7 uncles who also served. My grandfather who served in WWI. they were the lucky ones that came back alive. All scared in one way or the other, I remember my godfather, uncle Ken who was captured by the Japanese, starved and tortured for years who had nightmares the rest of his life.

Remembrance of all Canadian's who have served in wars, peacekeeping missions, disaster relief and life saving.

I have a large collecton of militaria in honour of all who have served in the Canadian Forces.
One piece I look at every day.

It is the original signal sent from the 1st Canadian Division, CEF to the 71st battalion CEF dated 11 Nov/18 0745 hours it reads...

"Hostilities will cease at 1100 hours on Nov 11 aaa Troops will stand fast on the line reached at that hour which will be reported to Corps HQ aaa Defense precautions will be maintained aaa there will be no intercourse of any description with the enemy aaa further instructions will follow"

This small now browning piece of paper ended the Great War to end wars......

I shall never forget.............

Here's another video - the music is achingly, hauntingly beautiful
("Homeward Bound" by the Choirs of Brigham Young University)

Here's to the troops that "never came home", and their loved ones who were waiting.

The best way to honour those who have served in the past and those currently serving is to keep our governments accountable and to stay informed in terms of world events. Until we as a collectivre realize this and stop letting the mass media Corporate machine spin reality to its own agenda, then we will watch again and again and again as our brothers and sisters fight and die for the economic gain of an invisble elite. Peace

Great video....another one that is a must is the song/video by Terry Kelly, our own Canadian musician....I sent it to my uncle, a WWII vet who served in France, married a girl from there and still lives there today. He said he cried through the whole thing. Is worth the watch....let's all bow our heads at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month and pay respects to those who have gone before us to give us the freedom we enjoy today!!

The next "REDFRIDAY" assembly/gathering is in Barrie,Ontario on Friday November 10th from noon til 1 pm.

Spread the word to friends and colleagues.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army
IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

It still brings tears to my eyes!

LEST WE FORGET!

Unfortunately we are forgetting.
We willingly surrender our freedoms in the name of national security. We now have things
like mail in voting(municipal elections) and electronic voting thus doing away with scrutineers, the most important part of the election process.
We have allowed multinational corporations to be dictators to us.
We allow foreign governments to dictate to us.

Wear the poppy to remember the sacrifice these people made for us.
Wear the poppy to remember to continue the fight for those who fell.
Wear the poppy to remember to pass on to our children what our fathers passed on to us.

REMEMBER!

I hope everyone can make it out to a service tomorrow morning...or at least stop whatever they are doing at 11:00 a.m. for two minutes of silence.

You will never be forgotten!
